Rickeclectic I don't think it is satire. I have read almost everything Van de Wetering has written, the fiction, non-fiction and the children's book. I believe he was very dedicated to Zen but also troubled by some of the dichotomies of the japanese way of "teaching." I think it was his way to try to cut through what he saw as bull and still preserve the effort toward a Zen state of mind.
