The book was probably a young adult novel written in the 80s or early 90s. It may have been called BEING GREEN or IT ISN'T EASY BEING GREEN. This may be the first line of the book. It was about knowing someone with cancer or aids. It was about a boy and a girl and I think the narrator was the girl. It may be a woman author, but I can't be sure.
