Why you hating on a computer Jack?
Jordan (The Gleek) wrote: "Why you hating on a computer Jack?"Because all a Mac comes with is trouble and a brand name.
Ok well let me tell you, Jack.
I find my Mac to be fantastic. If you've never used the new operating system Os X Lion, which came out Wednesday and I have, you should try it before telling me how terrible Macs are.
Not to mention, the internet is super fast, it's portable and very lightweight, tons of free apps to download, the backlight for the keyboard is helpful, the new trackpad is also very cool. They're not a hassle at all- I don't understand why they would be.
So, why don't I let you borrow mine for a day and we'll see if you still have anything bad to say about it, ok?

Lion still has its fair share of troubles.
Here is my list of complaints with Macs:
A)They're overpriced
B)They become obsolete in months, and are next to impossible to upgrade
C)You have to use wrappers for most things a non-Linux/non-Mac could do
D)The mouse is terrible.
E)There is a distinct lack of browsers to choose from
F)Incredibly hard to find a non-Internet Explorer wrapper
G)Bad starting OS. Lots of bugs to be found.
Also, browsers like Chrome and Opera are quite fast, and not resource intensive. There is also a wide variety of extensions ("apps") to choose from, both for your browser and your desktop.
And I do have experience with Macs. My high school uses them, and I've used the computers for around 40 hours. It didn't help that just about everything else runs on a regular Windows operating system, so "emulators" had to be used for just about everything.
A Mac has somewhere around two strong points: Customization (in terms of design and the like - personalization might be the better term) and artistic functions. If you're an artist, musician, photographer, video maker, etc, then a Mac is a (kinda) good choice. Otherwise, just get a Windows system. Hell, get a Linux if you want. Even that's better.
Honestly, with the money you use to buy a Mac, you could order your own components and set up a better PC yourself.
Alright. *cracks knuckles*
Overpriced? Well yeah, what do you expect? It's Apple. A demanding company, a Japanese company. America is willing to pay for their products, so they're going to take advantage of that and sky-rocket the prices.
Obsolete? I don't think so. I've used my sisters regular Macbook almost everyday this past year, and it's always been helpful and I've never just tossed it aside. Impossible to upgrade? que?
Wrappers? explain, please.
The mouse? Trackpad, you mean? And I find it to be wonderful. It's upgraded too, you can do everything a mouse can do and more with it. Switch browsers and flip a page with a swipe of your finger(s).
And the rest of your complaints...I won't bother with.
How can you say that a Mac would KINDA be a good choice for an artist or musician? It's a hell of a good choice. Why wouldn't it be.
If your willing to spend the money, you'll be glad you bought a Mac in the long run. It'll last you much longer and be worth it.
Aaand I have Chrome on my Mac. I'm using it right now. It's fab.

Apple is an American company. They make most of their products in Asia, where labor is incredibly cheap, but their headquarters are located in the States.
Regardless.
The most outrageous thing about the pricing of Macs is that they're just PCs that are made to look better, given a new OS, a brand name, and then put out onto the market for thousands of dollars more. It's the same thing with Alienware, except with a new OS.
It is next to impossible to upgrade things like hard drive space, graphics cards, or RAM on a Mac. I believe it's intentionally hard to do so, so that you have to buy a new computer or risk breaking it. Normal PCs are as simple as removing the old piece of hardware and inserting the new piece. So, while they still work, they don't work as well as they could (or should, for the amount of money you're spending).
A wrapper is a program that takes a program from Windows that wouldn't normally function on a Mac OS and makes it work. However, it's hard to find good ones, or ones that actually work. There's also the added danger of things like viruses.
The main wrappers used are Windows OS and video games. Macs are notoriously bad for gaming. However, the Window wrappers are generally a generation behind, and they have to be constantly updated.
Mac mouses have one button. Trackpads are another story. However, for the most "accurate" mouse movements, you want a regular mouse. Unfortunately, the official Apple mouses are designed for people with only one finger, apparently. The whole trackpad functions are also available on other systems; I have a trackpad that could do all of the things you mentioned, but I prefer to use the keyboard/mouse combo to navigate. That's just a personal preference, but my point is that the option is there.
The reason I said "kinda good" is because of two reasons.
The first is the ever present issue of money. While Macs are undoubtedly good artistic mediums, they still cost a ton of money, which is a pressing issue for most people, especially full time artists.
The second is simply because it is possible to do pretty much the same thing on another system. While I admit that it may be hard to find the iMovie equivalent on a Windows system, there are definitely some competitors, such as Blender. For just about every Mac function, there is a Windows counterpart that can even surpass those. There's also the added bonus that several of them are free.
So, while Macs are durable and will last you a long time, their hardware will not, and the computer will quickly become obsolete compared to the next few batches of computers put out. However, whether or not it will be "worth it" depends on the person who uses it and how he/she uses it. For the average person though, a Mac simply is not worth the money that is put into it.
*blinks several times*

I find them easier to use than most Macs. My dad constantly has to use his PC laptop for desiging stuff for work. In the time I've had my one Mac (my last one, I should clarify. My old one had an issue and Apple replaced the whole thing with the newest version for free) my dad has gone through four different PC laptops due to undetacbable viruses, overheating to the point of no longer working by using a simple program, malfunctioning hard-drives, and just not great durability. So in the long run, having one Mac worked out to be cheaper than his PCs which kept quitting on him.
Other reasons, they're awesome:
- If you're computer is to die, it saves all documents and other programs that were open at that time. I can't tell you how many times I've watched my friends be working away at their PCs and they die and wha-la, their whole project is gone.
- Deleting programs on a Mac is almost too simple. Instead of going to applications manager like on a PC you simply drag the application to the trash and it's gone from computer. A box will come up though and double check with you to see if that's what you meant to do incase you accidently delete a program by accident.
- The TimeMachine and iCloud programs Macs come with are amazing incase you are switiching to a new computer. It backups everything you had on your old computer (all the way down to your history) and transports it over to your new computer.
- Settings are all together and prertty simple-minded for new users. Organizing and customizing your computer is a lot easier.
- When you first turn on your computer you don't get a hundred-and-one windows popping up to noticate you on random, pointless things.
- Every program you would possibly need is always shown on your dashboard at all times, making finding and opening applications that much easier. You don't have to search into the comparents of your PC to find them.
- Viruses are nearly impossible. The only one I've seen (and that one was extremely hard to acquire) was a Rick-Rolled picture thing would pop up on your computer for thirty seconds every 12 hours.
- File-sharing, again, is some thing that has been made dummy-proof.
- Macs have Intel chips so if we wanted to download a PC program onto our computers for some reason it's easy too.
- You can view all the fine details of your computer with two clicks of your mouse.
- Updating your computer to a new OS systems costs only $20 through the App Store that comes pre-loaded onto our comptuers.
- Instead of completing ditching old OS when a new one comes out, Apple keeps giving updates to all it's old ones.
- Macs have kick butt commericals.
- You dont need to constantly reboot your Mac to makesure it's working to it's full capacity.
- The battery life remains strong through it's years and months of wear and tear. I've had my computer for a year and a half, and I still get 10 hours of battery-life when it's fully charged.
- We have a multi-touch technology.
- After being dropped onto cement from over five feet high, my computer only recieved a small dent to the corner but works absolutely fine besides that. It's a long story as to why it fell but that's for another time... :P
However, I will agree with you that Macs are overpriced and the hard-drives are harder to replace than with PCs, but in the long run I think the extra money is deffintely in the buyers best interest.
What? It's a terrible choice for most people.

It really depends on the type of PC you use. A cheap 200 dollar laptop won't last long, and that's never going to happen. While the viruses are admittedly a problem, the only reason the PC would overheat would be because of a bad fan or a malfunctioning fan. Depending on the price, I'd say the most likely thing is that it was malfunctioning, which can happen easily if there's dust nearby.
Admittedly, the automatic save function is nice, but not necessary if you save often (something I like to do).
While customization is a strong point for Macs, it's not terribly hard to do on a Windows computer either, especially if you use the God Mode folder.
You can easily pin the programs you use often to your desktop, so you can access them from anywhere (unless you're in full screen mode, which I'm guessing is the same with Macs).
Turning on your computer doesn't come with a slew of popups, or at least, all the computers I've used haven't. Maybe it's different with some older computers or computers from a different company.
Yes, viruses are a lot harder to get for Macs, because most of them are written for Windows. Unfortunately, because of that, there aren't many good anti virus softwares for Macs either. It's a tradeoff.
File-sharing, while easy from Mac to Mac, is incredibly hard to do from Mac to PC, and since the majority of computer users use PCs, that's not a good thing.
Viewing the details of a PC only take three clicks, and 11 key presses. That's about three more seconds, so that's not really that incredible.
I've never seen a Mac commercial. Just saying.
Rebooting a PC isn't necessary either - the only thing I have to restart is the router for a better internet connection. However, that's impossible to blame the computer for. Really, there isn't any advantage for restarting a computer, unless something goes wrong or you have to apply an update.
My laptop also has multi touch technology, and since neither system uses The Claw, then it doesn't really make a difference.
Macs are durable as well, something I'm surprised about. Seeing as Apple is quite money hungry, I'd expect them to make them incredibly easy to break.
That last jab was a bit uncalled for.
Violet wrote: "So Jack, what is the best computer in the world? A dumb ass dinosaur computer that's as slow as two turtles trying to wrestle each other?!"
That's quite a fair description of a Mac.
Unfortunately, the best computer in the world is a PC, so...

If anything, PCs are becoming obsolete. People want portable devices- Ipads, laptops, tablets, smartphones. Everything you can do on a PC you can do on those ^. Laptops, Macs more than anything, are smarter, better, faster, more reliable, and they stay up-to-date with the flow of today. PCs will be gone way before laptops.

Ophelia wrote: "Jack wrote: "Ophelia wrote: "I'm usin..."
First off, the problem here is that it's a touch screen.
Never get a touch screen computer.
Viruses are blocked by antivirus software, not your computer, so it doesn't matter how expensive your computer is, but how good your software is.
The noise is caused by the fan - that's an easy fix. All you have to do is just dust it out.
Failing that, replace it for about 10 bucks.
And that is why PCs are better than Macs.
Ophelia wrote: "If anything, PCs are becoming obsolete. People want portable devices- Ipads, laptops, tablets, smartphones. Everything you can do on a PC you can do on those ^. Regardless, Macs become obsolete faster than PCs, if only because you risk breaking it when you try to upgrade it.
While portable devices are nice, they'll never have as much memory/RAM/visual memory/other as a computer will have, regardless of whether or not it's a Mac or PC.
