What about that scene of the floating palace on the river in Australia? In fact, as I think of that, other memorable tableaux come to mind: the voyage, Sydney in at the turn of the (20th) century, and (more murky) the extraordinary characters of Oscar and Lucinda themselves. I enjoyed especially the first part of the book. ped

I haven't gotten to the floating palace scene yet. I'm reading the book in order to prepare my imagination for a trip to Sydney in April. If you have any other Australian novels or non-fiction to recommend, I'd appreciate it.
