On Wednesday (01.14.08) after school, I had a stimulating conversation with Ms. Sbelgio of Morning Star Rising. From her I learned about the website called Free the Slaves.net. As a result of the conversation, I created this small assignment for you. With regards to grading the assignment, prompts 1-4 below are worth 25 points each. #5 is voluntary. Post your answers on this discussion group page. I will not accept anything on paper for this assignment. All your responses must be posted to this group.

To complete the assignment, visit www.freetheslaves.net and answer the following questions/prompts:

1. What types of slavery exists in today’s modern world?

2. Visit the interactive map http://www.freetheslaves.net/Page.asp... and make 3 observations about slavery.

3. Visit the following link http://www.freetheslaves.net/Page.asp... and describe two actions this website is persuading people to do in order to help stop slavery.

4. Read the spoken word Rhyming Couplet poem at this link: http://www.freetheslaves.net/Page.asp... Create 14 original lines of rhyming couplets about slavery – that’s 7 couplets total. Remember, every two rhyming lines equals 1 couplet.

5. If you are interested in being part of a letter writing campaign on February 27th, let me know by sending an email. Please include “Free The Slaves” in the subject heading of your email. Ms. Sbelgio and I will set up a letter writing party for all those who want to participate in getting out the word about this issue.

When you are finished with the above assignment, feel free to visit www.thisissand.com and enjoy the excellent digital art program. Once you get to the site, click your mouse button, and see what happens. Hot chocolate goes to those who can make a sand painting that has something to do with the topic of slavery. Be sure to email me the URL - the web address of your painting. You can get the web address once you post your painting to the gallery. Cut and paste the URL from the browser bar and send it to me via email.

Sydney | 1 comments 1. There are a few different types of slavery. Some people are forced to work on farms, mines, some doing work around the house, and some as prostitutes.
2. A) I noticed that many of the regions mentioned involved child labor, like the child-soldiers of Africa and the child-workers in South America.
B) One thing that stood out in paticular to me was that no where in the world, except for Greenland - although they probably had no data, was free of slaves.
C) I also noticed how Asia had the greatest amount of slavery. I thought it might be because they had the most people.
3. They recommend educating yourself about slavery. They have links to a glossary, books, documents and research possibilities. They also would like you to contribute regular donations which help them accomplish the activities they need to.
4. Their promises lure me
to travel far across the sea
Their lies trap me
in a land from which I cannot flee
I have been tricked
I have been trafficked
I cannot understand
their strange land
But there is one thing I know
I have become a simple echo
Of what I was
and that is because
I am a slave
until the grave.

Sydney, Excellent responses. Your rhyming couplets are powerful. My favorite lines are ...I know and ...a simple echo.

Thank you for your (always) excellent work.

PS--can you edit your reply and remove your last name? Thanks.

HI!!!!!!
It's Mayrose.

1. The types of slavery in the past continue on today. There are 3 types that the website mentions: agricultural/farming, mining, and prostitution.
2.
•I noticed that slavery is illegal EVERYWHERE, yet it happens anyways.
•I noticed that American is mainly a receiver of slave labor and products.
•Slaves only go for $90 now days. Human lives are worth so much more (so much, that no amount of money should be able to control one).
3. They are trying to get people just to tell the world. "Read it. Write it. Shout it from the treetops." They are also trying to get people to volunteer or intern to help end slavery.
4.
Sunrise to Sunset
Peace is something I don't know yet
My owner gives me no reward
I'm the kingdom, he's the lord.
No one here to help me
No one to set me free
Why won't they hear my pain?
Why must my ruler be so vain?
Once I can't work I have no use
Won't that be magical, no abuse
Not to be here
Nothing to fear
They are cruel, pounding my head,
But hopefully soon, I will be dead.
5. No thanks. I'm not good at writing letters.

1. There are concentration slaves, sex slaves, domestic slaves and many others.

2. My observations are, they all get beaten, most are tricked into slavery and 1 in 10 children in Haiti are slaves.

3. Two actions in order to stop slavery are to not participate in slavery and donate money to help the cause.

4. I work all day and work all night
he pays no money and that's not right

I'm taken to a different place
I soon have grime all over my face

They take me to work, they tell me "Don't fear"
That's the last positive thing that goes in my ear

They chain and abuse me
they mistreat and use me

For generations yet to come
they'll work us in the burning sun

Unshackled, running, don't look back
across the river and down the track

I will escape this way of life
I will not die in pain and strife

1. From what i read, slaves are required to work in areas such as (ranked from bad to worst in my opinion):
-Mining
-Agriculture
-Prostitution

2.
-One of the most common jobs for slaves is domestic servitude.
-1.6 BILLION dollars is the profit that people in Africa get off of slavery.
-A lot of women are trafficked around Eurasia- about 40,000 to be exact.

3. They are encouraging people to get educated about slavery as well as getting them to donate so they can free slaves.

4.
This is not the way it should be
I shouldn't be living in slavery

Everyday, I'm beaten and bruised
Everyday, I'm used and abused

I know I don't have to live this way
I know there's got to be a better way.

These filthy people with all thier greed
They beat me up when i don't meet thier needs.

I've got to run, I've got to hide
Gotta get to the green grass on the other side.

This way of life, I can't take anymore
I'm tired of getting beaten down to the floor.

Harriet Tubman made it through
So that means i can make it through too.

Katie (treehuga) | 1 comments 1. There are not different kinds of slavery. There is only one way to control someone. The slaves might be in different locations, but they are still people, still humans. No matter what they're paid(If they're paid), or what their "master is like," it's still slavery and it's still wrong.

2.a-I was suprised to see the U.S. has slaves, aren't we supposed to be the land of the free?
b-South and Southeast Asia have the largest number of slaves in the world.
c-The U.S is mainly a reciever of slave labor and products.

3."Free the Slaves" wants people to Spread the Word about slavery and want people to Join the Movement.

4.I have chains
That my master is using like reins,

to control me
he just can't let me be.

I tried to run at times
but his way binds.

It holds me down so i cannot run & hide,
no one is on my side.

They sit and watch me rebel,
as if they were in a virtual jail cell.

Mind him they say,
he doesn't like it when you run away.

It's like we are all in a cave,
because all of us are slaves.

Period 6

1. sex slaves, people (mainly kids) forced to work in factories, prisoners of war (which are treated like slaves), agricultural, mining and probably more.

2. A)Japan is the worst for sex trafficking, if i read correctly. B)Recently, 6,000 and more people have just been freed from Brazil. Hooray!!! C)In the Middle East and Africa, it is estimated that 1.6 billion is made in profits. Sad.

3. Two things they are persuading you to do is to educate your self on what they're doing and the other is spreading the word about it so other people can educate themselves and help out.

4.This is all one poem:

Beat me down with wooden sticks,
crying silently with no admit,

I know i sewed the shoe wrong,
now my punishment will be very long,

scorpians running through the night,
it's very hazy through my sight,

my master sees me walking away,
calls his guards and makes me stay,

oh dear it's evaluation time,
it seems i havent made a dime,

no rice for my family tonight,
it puts me in a fight,

i'm sent back to my nest,
it's time to rest.

only to be woken again with the painful call of my master.

(The last sentence was just added so i would make a little more since.)

1. Sex slaves, agricultural slaves, and domestic slaves

2. There is 27 million slaves in the world today, most slaves are found in India or African countries, and about 14,500 slaves are sent to the U.S. every year

3. They want you to learn more about it and see how bad it is, and then tell everyone about it, because then they will see how bad it is and will want to stop it too, and the more people you have to go against something, the stronger it is, and the stronger it is the more a percentage that it will be overcome

4. i look at the sky and the birds so free
but then i look down at my knee

it covered in blood and bruises
only cause i spilled the juices

this life is hard for me
i can't even see my family

i never know if i will get out
i can't even scream or shout

there is no hope for me
or my family

i can use your help if you can give it
but i wouldn't be surprised if you didn't

so i will still stay
working day, after day, after day

wont you please help me be free,

1. Many slaves are tricked into slavery. They are told they will be given an education but instead, they get slavery.
2. It costs $250 to free ONE family from slavery in India.
3. Slavery is illegal everywhere and yet it continues.

3. Visit the following link http://www.freetheslaves.net/Page.aspx?p... and describe two actions this website is persuading people to do in order to help stop slavery.
1. One thing you can do is merely to educate yourself. This helps by making people aware of what's out there and how to stop it.
2. On the other side of the spectrum. You can get very involved by interning and/or volunteering. You can do this by having a fundraiser or host some kind of event to make people aware.

This life of pain is absurd

Working all day
With no pay

No one deserves this
I want to have bliss

I wish for my family
a better life than me

No one should live this way
for safety I pray everyday

I will be sold tomorrow
to another man who will give me sorrow

Sorrow until death
until my last breath

POEM
They tell you they will help you
But it's all a trick they do

Two days later they say
"I OWN YOU; YOU WILL WORK FOR NO PAY!!"

You are then forced to stay
And just can't walk away

Your in all that heat
And you get beat

You work all your time
And it's true,you don't get a dime!

You want to be free!
Many people can help,even me!

Don't lose hope and you'll see
That one of these days you too will be free

4.I have suffered many blows to the head
My master wont let me go to bed

All this for some stolen corn.
For my stomach is hungry all night, noon, and morn'

Promised hope that was given naught
A better life that I once saught

A bloodied face,another day
No part of me wishes to stay

I work in the fields from dawn until dusk
Shucking the corn,husk after husk

Long gone is the chance to be free

Not even the worst people deserve this fate,
Of this life and these masters I've grown to hate.

1! There are many types of slavery, like being forced to work in mines, forced to work in the fields, and prostitution. (Yucky ucky)
2! its absolutely illegal everywhere, but it goes on anyway, even america has some, and they really are only $90!! if they are going to be selling a human it should cost $200000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000020000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000002000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
3! its trying to get people to join the website, donate to it, or spread the word about it
4! Slavery is a bunch of poop, that causes me to get whipped if I fail to scoop!
Its not only the big hot sun, its the terrible torture of not having fun!
all of this being unable to play is a straightforward motivation to just run away!
But of course, if I did run away,
they would kill me before I'd even have a chance to play!
Its in this world, filled with hate, that I am forced to work way past eight.
If I just say "thats not nice," apparently its a reason to flog me twice!
if they killed me I'd be very happy 'cause my life is super crappy
Slavery is dumb. dumb like a bum in a slum eating gum with his mum.

Weekend Homework #17
1. The 3 Types of Slaves the agricultural, domestic and sex slaves.
2. The first thing I learned was that slavery is illegal but in still exists anyway. The second thing I learned was that the average cost of human slaves around the world is 90 million dollars. The third thing I noticed was that it is possible to end slavery in the next 25 years but in order for that to happen people have to really start playing some roles. By roles I mean the roles that are needed such as business, government, consumer, international organizations, and of course You.
3. Two Actions would probably be to Volunteer and to Adopt a Liberator with a Donation.
4. Here is my poem.
Searching for freedom in this world of cold.
This act is really getting old.
Everyday is the same old thing.
Sometimes it hurts like a bee sting.
I don't understand how people could be so cruel.
I think it's drool.
Hopefully thing will change.
Before I leave and get out of this range.
This lifestyle is so unfair.
It makes me want to tear out my hair.
I can't take it anymore.
It's making me sore.
Make Believe,Oh Please!
This will never go away, geez!

3)Free the Slaves wants you to donate $1000 dollars to help give a family of slaves a new start. They also want you to get more involved with the organization to help free the slaves.

1. I found 3 types of slavery, agricultural, prostitution, and mining slaves.

2. South America has 5 million slaves, Asia+Pacific has the most slavery equaling more than 5 million, I am surprised that North America has 500,000 slaves.

3. They are asking you to educate yourself so that you know more about it, and also asking that you spread the word so that more people will be aware and moght be able to help.

4. I hear my master call my name
the sharpness in his voice already gives me pain
i cry and scream from the painful things he does to me
tears, lashes, bruises and scrapes are all of thesse things
slavery is what this is from
where slaves are worked in slums
i pray for help
but nothing seems to come
but i know that this will be over someday
just when it happens i will thank God with glee
so help me live
throughout the night
and set me free
so i can see the light
