Started: 5/26 Finished:6/7

Why Read: A woman Robin Hood! Shomeret the Robin Hood fiend who also loves to read about women disguised as men does a happy dance! This sounded like huge fun to me.

Comments: It was huge fun. I really enjoyed it. I had a small problem with the fact Friar Tuck was barely mentioned which I found puzzling considering that she was a Christian Robin Hood. There was another disappointment which would probably be a spoiler but not for this book. I think it would be a spoiler for the next Robin Hood book by this author if there is one. I want this Robin to meet a certain historical personage. It would raise the coolness factor considerably. My rating for this one is B.

6)Japan's Minorities: The Illusion of Homogeneityed. Michael Weiner (historical/anthropological/sociological essays)234 pages. Source: Library Started: 6/10 Finished: 6/14

Why Read: I found this as a resource in Harukor: An Ainu Woman's Talewhich I read last month. I wanted to know more about the Ainu.

Comments: The essays that stood out dealt with Chinese and Korean forced labor in Japan in WWII. I was also fascinated by the Japanese-Brazilians. My rating for this book is A. See my June blog entry on this book at http://www.maskedpersona.blogspot.com

7)Ice Fire: A Thrillerby David Lyons (thriller)294 pages. Source: Library Started:6/14 Finished: 6/16

Why Read: I saw this on GR and it looked wonderful. It deals with a method of extraction of a new energy source, but what really drew me to it is the MC who is a Cajun judge in New Orleans.

Comments: I love love love Jock! ( He was actually officially a Jacques but no one calls him that)No he's not realistic, but I don't really want a thriller MC who is realistic. I want him to be improbably heroic. It's as if the author had crossed Spenser with James Bond and made him a Cajun. My only problem with the book is environmental. That's a major drawback of this book for me. But I'll definitely want to encounter Jock again. Rating B-

8) The Witch's Graveby Phillip DePoy (Appalachian mystery)240 pages. Source: Mystery Guild Started:6/16 Finished: 6/17

Why Read: The F2F mystery group that I attend selected this for August and I got on it right away because I love this series. The MC is Fever Devilin, a folklorist who is studying his own people. He also has some serious psychological problems and a very interesting background.

Comments: I actually read this before, but there's nastiness in here that I probably wanted to forget. But I did like Truevine, the "witch" character. She practices folk magic. Truevine makes this worth a B.

To Be Continued...
