Hi Allie,This is totally random. But it seems you really liked the book and as I cannot help you other way here is my idea: couldn't you contact the bookshop in Edinburgh and ask the seller?

I'm sure somebody will be able to identify this book, as I found it in Waterfords in Edinburgh in October, and a staff member had posted a recommendation near it. I'd just never heard of either the book or the author, and for the life of me can't remember them. I only got a little way into the book before I lost it while travelling, and want to track it down to read it properly.
So, recently published? In the last few years, I assume. It was set in some kind of 19th century period in London, with some kind of dust-like substance floating around. Similar to the kind of thing in the Golden Compass, I think.
and the protagonist was a boy who, near the start of the book, underwent a test to see if he was going to be able to receive this.. brand kind of thing, on his inner wrist. He ends up getting it and his mother is very relieved, because .. there's some significance surrounding his potential career or success .. my memory becomes rather hazy here.
I'm not sure if that's enough to go on, but I really didn't get that far into it before it disappeared. It wasn't a large book, maybe 300ish pages? And when I actually found the book in the shop, its location is such that the author's surname would have started with something towards the middle to end of the alphabet. I know that's a bit of a ridiculous hint, but I keep trying to visualise the placement of the book and work it out from there.
