Hereville: How Mirka Got Her Sword by Barry Deutsch
Sydney Taylor Book Award Winner 2011
I used Animoto to create my project. Since the story is about an Orthodox Jewish girl, I chose to use traditional music in the background.
I addressed the mood by including the music, questions, and pictures. The story itself is playful and intriguing.
In the video, I generated interest in the theme by asking questions about wanting to do something impossible to step out of your life for a moment and providing the invitation to join Mirka as she learns to appreciate her own life through her adventure.
I addressed the setting by providing hints of home and pictures of Mirka. The book's setting is her home in an Orthodox Jewish community and the woods behind her home. The time is unknown so it can be viewed as happening yesterday or happening 1000 years ago.
My goal with the video was just to generate interest in the book to 4th and 5th grade students. I tried not to give too much away so you will see the story is not fully told. Yes, the pig question and picture were necessary. Want to know why? Read the book!

The downside of Animoto is that you are very limited in your text field. So, I could not fit the whole citation for any picture on a slide. I had to use as much as would fit.

Very nice detail! I am amazed at how different all of our projects are turning out. I especially liked your teaching cues in your prezi.

Site: Videogram which is made through a partnership with shutterfly and animoto and accessed through the shutterfly.com site.

Setting: The book is set in a neighborhood so my project was created in our neighborhood and a local neighborhood park.
Mood: The book is fun and celebratory. This is seen through the illustrations which include colorful flowers weaving from page to page. My video includes similar colors and flowers as well as fun music and kids doing fun things with their own paletas.
Theme: The theme is simply the summertime fun that happens when the paleta wagon visits, I tried to capture this with kids and popsicles having fun!

Description of the book: This is a photo book of Langston Hughes' famous 1932 poem. There is only 32 words in the poem, but the photographs depict African American children and adults, that brings this poem alive for the reader.
I chose two video clips to entice the watcher to want to read this book. One video clip is of a women reading the poem, with images of Langston Hughes, and other time period images(scroll down on the image to find the circle tab). The second video clip is of Charles R. Smith Jr., the photographer, explaining how he decided to use this particular poem and his thinking behind most of the photographs. There are a lot of the photographs highlighted in the 2nd video(this circle tab is to the right of the picture).
Mood: The mood of the book changes from a darker tone to a brighter tone as the celebration of this culture is exposed. I chose my son's picture because it reminded me of the joy that we are trying to instill in him about his culture and skin tone differences. I also had him wearing his sun shirt because it depicts happiness.
The theme of this webpage is to inform the watcher about the poem and the photographs for the book "My People". It is also a celebration of the African American people and all the differences that they have among themselves.

The mood can be felt by the background and small graphics, which promote peace and love of nature. Sky lives in a home with little technology, and her parents want her to be aware of the earth around her. The setting is the family's farm near Sante Fe, during a war in which Middle Easterners are targeted for their assumed connection to terrorism. It reminded me of what could happen if we don't educate students about stereotyping, and the impact that it can have. The book draws on the internment of Japanese-Americans in World War II to set the stage for this. The themes of peace, understanding, and caring can be seen in the quote and images chosen in the Glogster.

Your book trailer is great! I must have missed a bunch of buttons on Animoto because I never saw even the background you used with the growing vines. I'll have to check it out again. Great job!

McKissack, P., Dillon, L. & Dillon, D. (2011). Never forgotten. New York: Schwartz & Wade Books.
Awards - 2012 Coretta Scott King Author Award
Setting - a long, long time ago in Old Mali in the Sahel, West Africa
Mood - There is a deep anguish when the father cannot find his son. There is pride at the end of the book when he realizes that his son is the great man he hoped he would be.
Theme - We learn from our families and we are their greatest legacy. No matter what happens we will never forget those we love.
I used Prezi for my presentation. I wanted my students to be aware of the profound loss of the families whose members were taken by slave traders. The families would probably never know what happened to their loved ones. This would be a good book to use, not only when studying slavery, but as a lesson about families and loss. I would like to give the students a choice to either write a letter as if they were Musafa back to Dinga to tell him what had happened to him and about how he felt or to write a letter to someone who has died telling them everything they would like to say.
