Holly | 60 comments I read this maybe 4-5 years ago when it was first out, there was also a sequel. It had a very convoluted plot, involving shares in the London Stock Exchange.

I think there was an escape from a prison, a place that was absolutely horrifying, with rapes and murders and no getting out until you could pay off your fine even if you were found innocent. Once the guy escaped he found himself involved in this plot. I want to say there were tulips involved, or something in the South Seas. Or something. Also people high up being bribed or involved in the conspiracy. I think the sequel may have required him sneaking back into prison? Or he became a detective maybe.

I may be conflating several books into this and be completely off base?
