Fred Walther | 4 comments I read this book as a youngster.
I remember that the boy was travelling on a ship and somehow (because of the waterspout??) went overboard.
He ended up on a derelict boat with others, trying hard to protect his money belt.
There were confrontations with others over their rations.
I can't remember much more than this, and it's been driving me batty.
I don't know the author or even have a good sense of the timeframe involved.

Sounds very much like Captains Courageous by Rudyard Kipling
:)

Fred Walther | 4 comments Thanks for the suggestions.
I don't think that it was Captains Courageous.

Are you sure?

He was fainting from seasickness, and a roll of the ship tilted him over the rail on to the smooth lip of the turtle-back. Then a low, gray mother-wave swung out of the fog, tucked Harvey under one arm, so to speak, and pulled him off and away to leeward; the great green closed over him, and he went quietly to sleep.

....

"Ten dollars! Why, see here, I—" Harvey dived into his pocket for the wad of bills. All he brought up was a soggy packet of cigarettes.

"A hundred and thirty-four dollars—all stolen," said Harvey, hunting wildly through his pockets. "Give them back."

Yes, I am.
It is definitely NOT Captains.
