Michelle (literarilyspeaking1) I'm not going to give anything away, here, but I picked up my copy of Holidays on Ice last night and started reading it.

This is definitely something that most of us need in this crazy, stressful season. I just started reading the second story in the collection and began laughing out loud in the middle of work.

It's some really funny stuff, and I know it will make for great discussion. I can't wait to get started with my first discussion with this group!

Arielle | 120 comments I'm so excited! I ordered mine online, so I'm praying it gets here before I miss too much!

Janet Mitchell | 19 comments The Santaland Dairies are amazing. I have some mixed feelings about the family Christmas letter. But regardless, Sedaris is certainly what I need this holiday season. Oddly enough, the Santaland Dairies is playing in Cincinnati and I bought tickets last week. I can't wait to see how the two compare.

Michelle (literarilyspeaking1) Man, I wish I could get to Cincinnati... I'd love to see it!

But, I agree with you about the letter. As I got more into it, I became less enchanted.

I picked up Holidays on Ice yesterday and ended up reading it straight through. I think there will be mixed reaction to some of the stories. Sedaris does not hold back in his desire to be irreverent and to push the envelope for sure. Am anxious to discuss as well...

Sarah (songgirl7) Janet, is it a stage production of Santaland Diaries?

message 7: by Meghan (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:06PM) (new)

Meghan Did we decide when we were going to have an open discussion of HOI and ACC? Just wondering as I don't want to start discussing before I'm suppose to.

Two things:

1) I must advise that Holiday on Ice is NOT a book to read on a plane. Well, unless you like to have a whole lot of people think you are insane. Seriously. I'm speaking from experience here. I couldn't stop laughing... the more I read the more I laughed. They were fleeing from me when we landed.

2) We are going to wait to discuss it until the 7th so that hopefully everyone can be involved. We'll start discussing A Christmas Carol on Wednesday the 12th for the same reason... unless you think that is waiting too long. Let me know, but I really think it's important we give a little lead time for everyone before we start discussions. Do the start times need to be earlier? Later? Let's discuss.

Meghan, I was typing that up before I read your question! Crazy timing!

message 10: by Sarah (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:06PM) (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Yay. Because I have to finish Rebecca by the 9th so that means I'll only miss the HOI discussion by a couple days.

I saw Santa Land Diaries before reading it. It's extremely faithful to the book.

Michele,

I think starting the discussion at those times will work great!

message 13: by Janet (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:06PM) (new)

Janet Mitchell | 19 comments The Santaland Diaries is a stage production. It is off-off broadway, but usually makes a small circulation around Christmas. I sure more places than Cincinnati have a production. Do a google search and see what you come up with. I let everyone know how it was. I have tickets for the 15th. I found out that is also the same night as the Over the Rhine Christmas concert, so I am little sad that I will have to miss that, but I should leave the production happy.

Sarah (songgirl7) OK. After you see it you should join my Page to Stage group and tell us about it!

message 15: by Janet (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:06PM) (new)

Janet Mitchell | 19 comments I will certainly do that.

message 16: by Meghan (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:07PM) (new)

Meghan Shannon and Michele - great coordination and I agree. The dates for discussions are good (for me, and well, isn't that what really matters to you?) - ha ha ha

message 17: by Arielle (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:18PM) (new)

Arielle | 120 comments Grrrr... I'm still waiting for my book! Down with online book buying!

Oh, Arielle! I'm so sorry! That's so disappointing when you want to be a part of the discussions! But never fear - were always here! We'll look forward to reading your comments whenever they come!

message 19: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Arielle, I can't help you with Holidays on Ice, but if you want to participate in the Christmas Carol discussions and don't have your book yet, you can find the text online at literature.org.

message 20: by Arielle (new)

Arielle | 120 comments Yay! I got my book about two hours after posting that...ironic. It looks pretty skinny, so I'll hurry up and catch up. Good tip on the ACC text, thanks Sarah!
