what the hell are they cutting it with?....i had heard the term 'bath salts' in conjunction with the subject of 'designer drugs' in general, but i don't know anything about them really...

I didn't see a vid, but I saw some photos that looked like they were photoshopped. I'm still recovering from the FB pictures a friend posted all over the place, without warning, of his cat post-surgery. It had it's eye removed. I've seen enough for one weekend. :(

BTW - Is anyone buying this story about bath salts? Does it seem a little unlikely to you guys? maybe I've watched too much Scooby Doo, but something seems "hinkey".

While I'm at it, I may as well go the full conspiracy theory.....
I heard in another group that the US Govt made an unscheduled "surprise" order that same week, cleaning out 3Ms respirator mask stockpile (about half a million of them, the top models). According to that post, the Russian government did the same thing two months earlier. Probably nothing, but it gave me the heebie-jeebies reading it!

Yes, I'm buying it, no it doesn't seem unlikely (we're not talking about real bath salts, here - it's just a street name for a particularly vicious drug). In fact most of the stories sound an awful lot like the stories I heard 30 years ago about PCP, just worse.

That's sort of my point. The stories we heard about PCP were mostly untrue. And while Bath Salts have been available in shops (that's right - in bong shops) for a while, I don't think anyone thought it was a serious designer amphetamine-based drug. People that make that kind of stuff aren't going to sell it in shops. All a bit weird to me.

Most of the stories I heard about PCP were true - which ones were you hearing? Most users of PCP, and probably Bath Salts, don't go psychotic and don't have the strength of 10 men, or require three bullets at point blank range to subdue them (for that matter, most people who smoke grass don't have worse side effects than munchies, but it _can_ cause serious mental issues including paranoia - or perhaps it just tips some people, who would have developed paranoia anyway, over the edge). But sometimes, the side effects of PCP were serious, and the stories about psychotic patients requiring half a dozen orderlies to hold them down in the Emergency room seem ubiquitous and believable.

I'm not surprised that anyone who made "designer drugs" would sell them in a bong shop (we'd call it a "head shop") - though I think the owners of the shops would have to be crazy to risk the liability of selling something completely unknown. But where else would the manufacturers sell them? Why sell them on the street if you don't have to?

I just don't see anything unbelievable about all this - many legally prescribed drugs can do the same things: the big difference is that your doctor and pharmacist are supposed to be aware of those possibilities and do their best to mitigate them.

Few people had heard of Bath Salts before all this, and nobody associated it with psychotic, violent behaviour. Had you ever heard of Bath Salts causing this kind of behaviour before those stories broke? Since when does the US Government come out with warnings about a genuinely dangerous new drug before anyone else has heard of the effects? I call bullshit.

I'm not saying I know what DID cause the cannibal stories, but this story doesn't ring true.

Before anyone else has heard of the effects? It was banned in Maine and in the UK, and many other places, months ago (Mephedrone, one of the key ingredients, was banned in the UK in April 2010; all the known ingredients were banned in Maine in July 2011), and it was banned largely because of the psychotic incidents. The US government is way behind the ball on this - so far all they've done is warn.

And there's no money to be made in selling a legal drug illegally - but the manufacturers laugh all the way to the bank as soon as it's banned.

Well the first part was definitely news to me. I thought mephedrine had been a controlled substance for a long time. I thought all the derivations of ephedrine had been tightly government controlled for a long time. That's why I didn't believe it actually contained mephedrine. That would make the whole thing a lot more credible.
