since this is the shojo fc, well my top faves are

1. Fruits Basket ( awesome. incomparable. )
2. Nana ( if not for the drama, read it for the breathtaking art, ai yazawa style)
3. Shinobi Life ( shojo with a plot and I really don't know why this one is not popular)
4. We were there (pure emotional stuff. a bittersweet lovestory)
5. High School Debut (the only romantic comedy I ever liked)

honorable mentions (because we all know mentioning only 5 is unfair)
Dengeki Daisy (good plot)
Skip Beat (this one would have been higher if I didn't think it's dragging a bit too much)
Akagami no Shirayuki (this one is something that s is a bit hard to explain. Even I don't know why I like it but it is indeed a good manga which takes a little bit time to get into)

Good to see another DGM fan. :) It's a shame the series got canceled, and at such a great part, too!

☆ Michelle Kobus (michellekobus) I KNOW!!! I loved Kanda's storyline so much, and the overall storyline was getting complex in a good way...totally bummed about it :''(
So, I've taken to rereading it just months after I first started it ♡

I've reread it a few times. Just about each time a new volume comes out I go back and relive the old days. And thank Hoshino-sensei for the art upgrade lol

☆ Michelle Kobus (michellekobus) I adored the later artwork! A lot of people seemed to dislike it, but I thought it was great.

Mary (leafmary) | 48 comments Hmmm for now I can only think of a few. I am still reading lots of series. The ones I name are the ones that either left a huge impact on me with gave a great cast of characters I could root for, or ones that I instantly fell in love with.

1. Kamisama Kiss-been my fav for 2 years now and still is my fav.
2.Pandora Hearts-just go and read this. Like right now.
3.From Far Away-best example of girl in a new world.
4.Akatsuki no Yona-need I say why?
5.The Ancient Magus' Bride

I will most likely be making new lists but so far, this list has been the same for almost a whole year.

message 34: by Meagan (last edited Mar 16, 2017 06:26PM) (new)

Meagan (shinyhobbit) | 5 comments I know this one hasn't been touched in awhile but I just joined and would love some suggestions based off my favs for some to read. Im on
Kimi ni Todoke From Me to You, Vol. 1 by Karuho Shiina Kimi ni Todoke and about to finish the series(been binge reading), and just been reading Hibi Chouchou T01 by Suu Morishita ( 森下suu) Hibi Chouchou for awhile and almost done that one too.

My favs are:
1. Parfait Tic! 1 by Nagamu Nanaji Parfait Tic! Which i faithfully read for years as it came out.

2. Ouran High School Host Club, Vol. 1 (Ouran High School Host Club, #1) by Bisco Hatori Ouran High School Host Club - My first Shoujo and when I fell in love with the genre, even if it's more gender bender than shoujo.

3. Nana, Vol. 1 (Nana, #1) by Ai Yazawa Nana -both fell in love and broke my heart. I felt the ending was so sad.

4. 海月姫 1 Kuragehime 1 (Princess Jellyfish #1) by Akiko Higashimura Kuragehime (Princess Jellyfish) - which brought me back from Nana...was light and heartfelt, and dorky.

5. Stardust Wink 01 by Nana Haruta Stardust Wink - just finished this and loved it so much, no spoilers but was rooting for the manga artist guy but accepted the other as the love interest, was pleasantly happy with the outcome.

Based off these, what should I read next?

message 35: by Selena (new)

Selena (sailorstar165) | 2018 comments Mod
Ouran is a shoujo because it was published in a shoujo magazine. Common misconception: shoujo is an intended audience label rather than a genre. :) It's kind of like "children's" refers to the age group of the book's audience, not the genre.

I'm planning to read the first volume of Princess Jellyfish in the next few days (because library had it and I'm determined to read all of their manga lol). Glad to hear it's good.

message 39: by Mike (new)

Mike | 389 comments I adore a ton of series, although surprisingly my top five posted above 3 yrs ago (Cross Game, Claymore, A Bride's Story, Pluto and Yotsuba) is still pretty accurate.

Also love Vinland Saga, Food Wars, Town of Evening Calm, Until Death Do Us Part, and Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro, to name a few more.

I'm admittedly not much help with shoujo recs. I read mostly seinen.

message 43: by Rose (new)

Rose (raddevlin) | 7 comments Here's my top 5 manga list... that has no shojo manga in it, haha. I blame my brother and husband for my manly taste in comics.

スティール・ボール・ラン 1 (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 7, Steel Ball Run #1) by Hirohiko Araki
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure - I've been a fan about 15 years and I'm still in love with this series. Steel Ball Run is my favourite part but they're all good and have their own charms. I could write essays about how much I love Jojo so I'm cutting myself off here!

Akira, Vol. 1 by Katsuhiro Otomo
Akira - An incredible manga with amazing art, story and characters. The architecture and machinery are especially well drawn! If I wasn't a massive Jojo fangirl, this would top the list.

Berserk, Vol. 1 by Kentaro Miura
Berserk - Amazingly detailed art combined with strong characters, powerful action and an engrossing but deeply depressing story. Explicit in basically every way you can think of so not recommended for the faint of heart!

Ghost in the Shell (Ghost in the Shell, #1) by Masamune Shirow
Ghost in the Shell - A classic. Great characters and story and surprisingly (if you watched the original movie first) a fair amount of humour.

Fist of the North Star by Buronson
Fist of the North Star / Hokuto no Ken - Another well drawn manga with strong characters, great action scenes and something of a downer story that is also pretty violent. And another post-apocalyptic setting, come to think of it. This manga is clearly an early influence to Jojo's Bizarre Adventure in all the best ways.

Honourable mentions:
One Piece
Monster
Yotsuba&!
Mushishi
Great Teacher Onizuka
Gokusen
Hana Yori Dango
Skip Beat

It really is a fantastic manga. It's filled with tension and mystery and despite the long story, it manages to resolve just about everything in a satisfying way. It's the sort of manga that once you start reading, you can't put it down. :)

According to Wikipedia, it's shounen. It's one of those odd shows that feel like it could be either at times, though, since its protagonist is female and has a surprisingly heavy focus on relationships and such. :)

I think they're getting there. I know of a bunch of manga (usually shounen, but also some shoujo) that share a lot of traits with the opposite intended demographic. There are also some genre tropes (*cough*magical girl*coughcough*) that have spanned every demographic at this point.

Most of us won't know because it depends on what publisher the manga is in. There are SEVERAL different shojo/josei magazines, like Princess, Margaret, Ribon, etc. and each caters to diff things.

Princess is mainly josei or historical romance. Requiem of the Rose King is published under them and is considered by many to be a seinen manga but it's shojo. Considering the main cast is predominantly male and deals with topics like war, rape, and etc. most would assume it to be seinen and it's understandable.
