This is for the discussion of The Painted Veil by W. Somerset Maugham (Ch. 27-53).

Gitte (GitteTofte) | 134 comments It's interesting to follow Kitty's development! She's definitely not like Undine from The Custom of the Country any more. I'm curious to see where the story will go.

Martha Samsell (tmhoira2012) Implications of things going bad after having an affair is a reoccurring theme in this book. There is an underlying issue of God punishing those who commit adultery. I don't want to give the book away about the end of the story where there is a parallel to her making up to her father like a person would make to God for their sin.

Regina (ReginaR) I really like Kitty now. It is interesting how the nuns also focus on her "beauty". As if Kitty's beauty was something internal and part of her personhood.

I also like, while it is disturbing at first to read, how Kitty overcomes her prejudices toward the Chinese orphans.
