Is it safe to say that if the book with the highest votes is a classic, the contemporary book with the next highest votes will be chosen as a companion book (and vice versa), or are we doing another vote, or will it just be picked by a moderator? Just wondering.

message 9: by Sarah (last edited Aug 25, 2016 01:59PM) (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) I like the idea that we take the highest rated book of each genre. I don't think that will always be the best way to choose, but for December I think it would work.

c'mon... dorothy parker was a badass fast-talking no-nonsense chick! the rory gilmore (with a bit more booze and sex) of her time!

message 24: by Sarah (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:00PM) (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Yay Meghan!! I don't deserve blame, I deserve credit. :P Honestly, I think this is the perfect Dickens for non-Dickens readers. It's short, you're already familiar with the story, and it's soooo good.

Brian, I think you have to rate them all... But yay! Does this mean you're going to participate this time?

Update: I was at B & N tonight (home away from home now), and I saw The Portable Dorothy Parker. I wasn't quite sure of the lay-out...it looked like there were passages from Oscar Wilde in there, and Vanity Fair. It was also around 600 pages. Does anyone know how this book is laid out? There were short stories, poetry....a bunch of stuff. I'll still up for tackling it if it's chosen for sure, but I was just wondering if anyone else has or has seen this particular book. It was really cool--the cover is like comic strip type graphics.

message 30: by Sarah (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:01PM) (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) There's a publisher who's been doing a lot in the comic book covers. The cutest one I've seen has been The Count of Monte Cristo.

I wonder if there are different editions of The Portable Dorothy Parker? I don't think the one we have on our list has a comic strip cover, does it?

message 31: by Alison, the guru of grace (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:01PM) (new)

Alison | 1282 comments Mod
Well, the cover on Rory's list is definetely different than the one I saw at B&N. I wonder if they're the same edition with different covers? Hmmmmmmmm...

message 32: by Sarah (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:01PM) (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Maybe it was The Tree Musketeers instead of The Count of Monte Cristo...

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/book...

Anyway, I'm all for reading this one too (Dorothy Parker, that is) if it's the one chosen. The nice thing about it and the two Sedaris books is that you don't have to read the whole thing cover to cover; you can just read selections if you want. That's a nice option for this busy time of year.

Right. I picked up A Christmas Carol (O.K., and all the others, too) at the library. You're right, Sarah. It is short. It's really a novella, or even a long story. Never knew that. Great Expectations, on the other hand, is pretty meaty. Haven't been there since ninth grade. (Unless you count the Gwyneth Paltrow/Ethan Hawke thingy).

message 34: by Sarah (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:01PM) (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Yeah, it's a novella. That's why I think it's a perfect way to be introduced (or re-introduced) to Dickens (plus, like I said, it's always easier when you're already familiar with the story).

I think it's so funny how so many of us have already purchased most or all of the books on the voting list, before voting is even closed. I think that means it's a really good list, and we'll all be happy with which ever gets chosen. I picked up both Sedaris books and a new version of Little Women (I couldn't find my copy), and I already have both Dickens books. So if the Dorothy Parker one is chosen, it's the only one I'll have to go out and get.

message 35: by brian (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:01PM) (new)

brian yeah, yeah sarah... i'll read whatever's chosen. promise. even if it is david sedaris. i've never actually read one of his books but have read many of his stories in the new yorker and always find them a bit smug and overly cutesy... his sister, on the other hand, is pretty amazing. i think i might be in love with her.

yes, probably is a glass of wine in the picture. a glass of wine, a couch, a book, and my dog... that's all i need to be a happy boy.

go dorothy parker! and yes! the comic strip cover is great! great! great!

Emily, I'm a tried-and-true, die-hard San Jose Sharks fan. I like the Caps and the Blackhawks, too, but nothing compares to my beloved Sharks!!! I enjoy the sport in general, though, so I even went to a game in the Czech Republic once! I'm inviting you as a friend so we can discuss without annoying all these nice, respectable book-people. Dottie (oxymoronid) | 698 comments Okay -- now DON'T laugh -- I love the Ducks and before that the Kings reigned supreme in our house -- the same daughter who hooked me on GG got me into hockey and I now claim that my favorite sports are the slowest and fastest -- baseball and hockey. Let the hockey talk flow -- only maybe it could just be in its own thread? I think I saw an autographed Luc Robataille poster around here not long ago -- heh - his first year with the Kings! There was a brief time when the Sharks got our attention also -- but that didn't last and I can't even recall what the connection was -- it's age again.

And the Austin Ice Bats are way cool!!

it before but worth reading again)

some of the play, maybe it's time to read the
book???)
5 A Christmas Carol (Not at the top of any of my
lists!)
6 Great Expectations (Didn't like it in High

unknown)

Okay gang! Voting has closed. I'll be back with the results in a new thread shortly!

Oh, and ROCK ON that there are so many hockey fans around here! Dottie, I was at Robataille's last game. Sarah, I love you and I hate you. Next time your hubby has tickets to give away, SNAG ONE FOR ME!! And it must be tomorrow night's game. Or last night's. Liz, so funny, your lead in to your voting! Way to keep us on point! We SHOULD start a hockey thread... but right now I've got some votes to calculate!

Sarah (songgirl7) Michele, he has to give them to customers, but if he ever has an extra the customer can't use, I'll let you know.
