Naming pets after fictional characters or real life authors
Sorry to hear that. A few name that came to mind-Pixel- (Source Heinlein) or his actually cats name which was “Snowy,” or more formally known as “Nijinski Snow Storm.” He is the successor to the Heinleins’ cat Pixel, made famous by The Cat Who Walked Through Walls. http://heinleinblog.blogpeoria.com/fi...
Schrödinger- (AKA Schrödinger's cat)
Tiberius
The cat in the movie Aliens is referred to as both Jones and also as Jonesy.
Once you know what the cat looks like
it might be easier to name him/her.
My boyfriend and I had a cat named Jarlaxle after the character from R.A. Salvatore's books. I wasn't wild about at first, but it grew on me. My mother never could say it correctly and called him Jacklarkle.
All my pets are named after Buffy villains. My dogs are Faith and Harmony. My cats are Drusilla, Darla and Evil (after the First Evil in the final season).
My daughter is named Aeryn and my son's middle name is Zaphod. And I was named after Jessica Atreides. Oh wait, you said pets... um...My sister's two kittens, which I named, are Sherlock and Mycroft.
For inanimate objects, my home network is named Aurelius and all the computers on it are Buffyverse vampires. The TiVo is Anya, because it's not really a computer, and I ran out of good vamps. All of my iThings are named after shipboard computers (HAL, Dora, Eddie, etc).
My cats are grey-eyed Gandalf and brown-eyed Radagast. (Non-Tolkien fans have a time with that last one). When I got to name the office betta fish, I started with Reaver, but that was a bit too fierce, so he became River (about the time Serenity was out).I guess OMW doesn't make a great name, how about Sagan? Easy to spell and pronounce. Or Little Fuzzy.
My cats' name is Mephistopheles although it's a little long and we normally just call him Mist. Call it Slartibartfast
My cat is Oz, as in Wizard of. I tend to name animals after adult beverages (Scotch, Yeungling, Porter, Guinness...) and video games (Link and Zelda, Rydia...)Sorry about your loss, Nick. :( but the new kitten is super-cute.
Jess wrote: "My daughter is named Aeryn and my son's middle name is Zaphod. And I was named after Jessica Atreides. Oh wait, you said pets... um..."That was my initial thought too: why stop at pets? My eldest son's middle name is 'Xander, and his younger brother is Riley. Their sister narrowly escaped 'Willow'.
I think it's important for people to give their pets goofy names so they don't give it to their kids and ruin them forever. All those goofy little pets all those celebrities own, you'd think they'd keep the goofy names away from the kids.

I have a vet appointment so I should have confirmation if the kitten is female today. I was thinking maybe Daenerys or Dany for short. Or maybe even Catelyn or "Cat" for short.
Good luck at the vet!I have to admit that of the listed names, Daenerys is a good name, plus you can adress her as Kalisi (sp?) the first time she perches on your chest and demands to be treated as royalty. :)
Sadly(?) our geek cred extends past our pets...
Son: Xander (given name is Alexander)
Daughter: Kaylee (given name is Katherine Louise)
I may dislike a lot about Whedon's directing style but I luvs his characters.
I'm so sorry about your cat. I just lost one a few months ago. Her Name was Ishie short for Ishmael. Her brother's name is Queequeg. Maybe 1 in 10 people can pronounce that. My vet asked me if it was from Moby Dick or the X-files.I also have 3 fish called Pully, Skwish and Grubb (Steven Erikson)
If its a girl there is always Zoe from John Scalzi's Old Mans War series. But I really like the Khalisi idea.
Our cats are named for comic book characters. The ginger tom cat is named Hobbes because he looked like a tiny skinny tiger when we got him. Now he looks more like a Garfield, as he is huge and distinctly pear-shaped, but age and indoor living will do that to a cat. The female is called Mina (after Mina Murray Harker in League of Extra-Ordinary Gentlemen - NOT the novel). If I get another female cat, I want to name her Barda. :)If I get a little girl, I still want to name her Arya. I think there are worse characters to name a daughter for.
Sorry to hear about your cat. My fiance and I named our dogs Gambit and Rogue after our favorite X-Men characters. Good luck in choosing a name the kitten is adorable!
My first cat was named Orko after the magician in He-Man.I like Jonesy from Aliens. That's rather clever.
You could always name him/her after a character from the classic "Flight of Dragons"
Malin Engdahl wrote: "If I get a little girl, I still want to name her Arya. I think there are worse characters to name a daughter for."I'd wait until the series is over before naming a kid after any GRRM characters - you never know how they might end up!
Well, turns out she is a girl. I'm going to name her Daenerys so I can call her "My little Khaleesi". When the vet asked what I was going to name her and I told her that and she said they had one other client that had named their new cat "Khaleesi Daenerys".
I have named my pets after fantasy/Sci-fi characters since before the last ice age.Guenhwyvar - Drizzt Do'Urden's kitty cat
Camber - The Deryni series
Paksennarion - The Deeds of Paksennarion
Shae - Shannara series
Talyn - Farscape
Kira - DS9
I usually just peruse the list of characters handily available at the back of most fantasy books and see what sticks when I throw it against a wall. If that fails, I run through TV shows I'm watching.
AndrewP wrote: "I once had a guinea pig called Bilbo."we had 5 pet rats all named after AWA wrestlers
Had I no allergies, I would name my cat Azrael after the scourge of the Smurfs. I do, though, so I won't.
Sorry to hear about your cat, Nick. I've seen a few pets come and go, and it always sucks.I don't currently have a pet, but when we eventually get one, and assuming it's a "he", I want to name him No'-As-Big-As-Medium-Sized-Jock-But-Bigger-than-Wee-Jock Jock, after one of the Feegles from the Tiffany Aching series by Terry Pratchett.
Redd wrote: "I think it's important for people to give their pets goofy names so they don't give it to their kids and ruin them forever. "My last name is pronounced "pilot." My nephew is named Otto. His middle name is Maddock.
Yeah, my brother is crazy.
Sorry for your lost. I think the name you chose is great! My favorite Song of Ice and Fire character. My cat is also named for a fictional character. Leelu from Fifth Element.
(my spelling is intentionally different...I figured I point that out as someone was bound to mention it)
Glad you got a new kitten Nick. We recently just got a cat from a rescue shelter where we live. I convinced my daughters to name her Rosalyn after The president of the 12 colonies in BSG. I like to believe she is scheming to throw the dog out of the airlock whenever she stares at him for a long time.
My current cats are Jin & Mugen, named after the characters in Samurai Champloo. It's always interesting to see how they try to pronounce "Mugen" at the vet's office.
Back when I kept fish, I had some angels. They were called Destiny, Harmony, Rhapsody, Symphony and Melody, from Captain Scarlet, and Angel One and ANgel Two, from Earthsearch.
Its always sad when a beloved animal dies. :( The Two Elder Inside cats are named after Fictional Doctor Who Sim Characters that I was involved in for 4 years and still get scripts for. Orion T(ardis) Cat and Nero T(ardis) Cat. In the past year my brother got a tiny scrawny outside cat that had huge bulgy eyes like the Pug Dogs so his Name is Pugg. He added to his name by the times he has gotten into the fridge and decided to nap in the door so his full name is Pugg The Assassin Kitteh. Don't Open your Fridge He might be lurking there waiting to Slay you!
About ten years ago I was living in Haverhill MA and there was what we thought was a stray cat hanging around our apartment. All the other tenants had cats already so it fell upon my to take it in. At first I thought the cat was male( Never thought of looking to see if it was really male or female). I ended up naming it Issac after Isaac Asimov. So we all thought it was a male and called it Isaac with out thinking for a few years until one day a friend of my neighbor checked (I am still afraid to ask why she was checking out my cat, but I still get this "ewww" feeling whenever I see her) and she found out that Isaac was a girl.
If I ever decide to live in the country and have a donkey(female), she would deffinitely be called Daisy! (Cadfael)
I have an orange tabby named Peregrin, but everyone just calls him Pippin. His name was actually Neville (after Neville Longbottom from Harry Potter) for a day but it really didn't suit him.
The first two cats my wife and I had were Mozart ("Mo" for short) and Tribble. If we had gotten another cat the time, it would have been Berlioz ("Bear" for short). Our current cats are "Miss Kitty Fantastico" (Willow and Tara's cat from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Bunny (so named because when we got her from the humane society she was tiny and liked to hide under furniture like a dust bunny, and is gray and white.)
In the future, I hope to get a small yappy dog and name it Fizzgig (from The Dark Crystal).
There are many many other good names in fiction for pets.
When I got my first cat, he used to like to hide behind the vertical blinds in the townhouse where I was living. So I named him Polonius after the character in Hamlet.Polonius died a couple of years ago and we got a new kitten a couple of months later. We let our son (about 2 years old at the time) pick her name and he chose Mokey after the character of the same name on Fraggle Rock.
How about naming a pet after a ship from an Iain M. Banks Culture novel? There is a list here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_...
Some of these would be pretty funny.
'Irregular Apocalypse'
'Little Rascal'
'Xenophobe'
'Very Little Gravitas Indeed'
'Problem Child'
'Unacceptable Behaviour'
'Space Monster'
might not be book-related per say, but we named our cats Garrus (Mass Effect) and Zeke (inFamous). :)
Named our dog Hopper. I convinced my wife to let me name him that because of his jumping around, her never having read Robert Jordan before.

Ender’s Game (other topics)Split Infinity (other topics)

"Tuggers" was named after the T.S. Elliot poem by the woman who gave him to me.
All this to lead into that I'm getting a kitten from my mother who was recently adopted by a pregnant stray that has since given birth to four kittens.
I'd like to name this new kitten after a scifi book character. I don't know if it will be a female or male yet.
I was thinking that if its male I might name him Rincewind or maybe Pratchett( for Terry Pratchett). If the kitten I get is female I was thinking about maybe Trillion.
Anyone have any good suggestions?
UPDATE:
picture
Calling her Daenerys or just "Khaleesi" around the house.
