Myles Swain (abrokencradle) | 16 comments hi everyone - new to the group and hope i can call it home. been wanting to find a warm place to land for a while now.
i live alone, have a house full of pets, and have been working in animal shelters for 30+ years now - very passionate about it. i was a gay single father who raised a daughter, and am now a grandfather twice over. hope i can find some good friends here - somewhat of a loner...

Nancy | 2838 comments Welcome, Myles! Hope you enjoy your stay here.

What kind of pets do you have?

And what do you mean by "I was a gay single father?"

I'm assuming that maybe you are no longer single, as you will always be a father.

If I'm intruding into something too personal, just tell me to shut up and mind my own business. :)

Myles Swain (abrokencradle) | 16 comments not at all...just a wrong choice of words. still am a single gay father. got really burned on my last relationship (11 years ago) and have been self- exiled ever since.
my life has been a series of one painful interlude after another. alot of abuse as a child, more as a young adult. one of my partners was killed in a car accident. through the darkness, i found love in my daughter, born from a transgender. i've written a memoirs about it A Broken Cradle. just the tip of the iceberg...
it was very nice of you to take the time to respond..thanks nancy - i think i may have found a friend here....
i have 7 cats and 3 dogs...pretty much a steady flow in this house. i have a twin(identical) - we ended up not being so identical.

Nancy | 2838 comments I wasn't aware you were an author until I took a peek at your profile. Feel free to post another intro in the Authors & Publishers topic telling us all about your memoir.

I am sorry for all the pain you have endured in your life. Your daughter is beautiful.

Myles Swain (abrokencradle) | 16 comments thanks nancy...and yes, she is. taron was very introverted in her early teens, so i took her to model search in atlanta, and 8 agencies wanted her (she was 14). when she turned 15, she won a national model search in YM magazine sponsored by CoverGirl.over 12,000 entries and she made the top 10. they flew her to NYC for the finals. she was no longer introverted - the exact opposite. one of the better moments in my life. i am a very proud papa.
nancy, i want to read someone else's memoirs, have any suggestions? maybe one of the new authors here?

Nancy | 2838 comments Reading your book's description made me think of I Am Not Myself These Days A Memoir by Josh Kilmer-Purcell

Have you read it? I thought it was funny and heartbreaking at the same time.

Myles Swain (abrokencradle) | 16 comments i read it late in 2009. loved the sense of humor -common thread among drag queens...

Myles Swain (abrokencradle) | 16 comments Nancy, what prompted you to become an avid reader? what was the first book that really impacted you....always curious about that...

message 11: by Myles (new)

Myles Swain (abrokencradle) | 16 comments The first book i couldn't put down was in 8th grade - The Excorcist (in it's day it was really powerful). the first book that really impacted me was The Front Runner - i read it in high school when i was coming out. i sooooo connected with that book...i read The Fancy Dancer right after...

When I was 10 years old, I devoured Edgar Rice Burroughs' The Land That Time Forgot and The People That Time Forgot. Then I went on to Jules Verne, and H.G. Wells. Future settings, different worlds and adventure stories always fascinated me. When I was in my teens, I devoured my mom's Harold Robbins and Danielle Steel books. Then I had to be more careful, as my dad found 79 Park Avenue under my bed and scolded me and my mom for reading trash. Then I discovered Stranger in a Strange Land and started becoming more fascinated with the illicit things adults did.

Good Times/Bad Times and A Separate Peace were required reading for my modern novel class in high school and totally blew me away. Then my brother came out to me when he was 17, and he introduced me to other gay novels, some good and others not so memorable.

Now I read most everything, but find that I'm more selective and less patient if a book is not working out for me.

Myles Swain (abrokencradle) | 16 comments thank you for being so open Nancy. you'll have to tell me the story about your brother coming out. i like hearing people talk - even if it's just text.
i found a friend from junior high and high school on here. he recommended a few books for me, The Value Of Rain, and The World Of Normal Boys. will give them a try...
