Janice (jamasc) | 60156 comments I fell asleep for a bit. I'm not sure how long I slept.

Janxmom, I've got my hands full with The Stonor Eagles. I'm not even half way yet. So I doubt I'll be able to read the one I borrowed from the library.

How's the distraction, Kat? Has he gone to sleep yet?

Well, back to reading for a bit before I make myself some supper.

Thanks, Kimberly, you're making me feel reeaaallly old right about now...

Sam (ecowitch) | 2363 comments Cracking on with For Whom The Bell Tolls fairly well and am about two thirds of the way through. Time for a spot of tea and a snack to keep me going I think.

Hows everyone else going?

Mintymedley | 60 comments I am in the middle of disk 4 (out of 7) of A Room with a View and Saturday evening plans have been struck that will disrupt my reading.

Friends are coming over to play card games. I hope I have enough time to finish my book before 9am tomorrow (my time).

Cheryl (cherylllr) I finished The Bradbury Chronicles: stories in Honor of Ray Bradbury. Dated 1991, 336 pages, and I read the stories and errata in reverse order - So, three awards!

Review to come tomorrow, but I think I'm giving it four stars. Now a small break and on the next book. It's shorter, so I'll be able to get the last badge without staying up too late. I admire the enthusiasm of all of you who are sacrificing sleep or other activities for this! :)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Almeta and I have finally finished our first books. Now it's time for steak dinner... very late one! Then on to more Westlake for Almeta and The Girl in the Steel Corset for me. Going to be an interesting.... long.... night! Whew!

message 160: by Mikki (new)

Mikki Finished The Murderess which ended beautifully, but was not that compelling as a whole (3.5) and then read a few short stories by The Stories of Breece D'J Pancake. Now about to begin The Life of Lazarillo de Tormes.

message 161: by Tajma (new)

Tajma Loving The Art of Fielding. This is a perfect novel to spend hours with (although it also makes me want to go downstairs and work out!). We just finished dinner and I'm ready to go through the night. It's doubtful that I'll finish but should make a significant dent.

Maria, what are you reading?

message 162: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Just finished my first book, The Mistress of Spices, loved it, probably 4 stars. Now I'm going to do a quick search for an e-book.

Mikki - You'll have to let me know what you thought of The Stories of Breece D'J Pancake. He was born across the river from where I'm currently living, probably no more than 5-15 miles away.

message 163: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60156 comments *sniff* Everyone is finishing books, and I'm still not finished the first half of Stonor's Eagles.

I'm stopping for supper - garlic sausage and perogies with sour cream and home made bacon bits.

Jaxnsmom, I'm really enjoying his writing. Have you read his book? His work feels like true happenings to me as if he were retelling incidents that just passed. Slices of life and conversation that make you feel as if you're eavesdropping -- he definitely was heavily influenced from his surroundings. The foreword was so sad as I'm sure the afterword by Andre Dubus will be.

Do people speak of him as a local celebrity?

message 165: by Sam (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 2363 comments Don't worry Janice you're not the only one who hasn't finished a book yet, I'm still reading For Whom The Bell Tolls (but am into the last 100 pages so should get that done in the next hour or so)

Think I'm going to read a few of my shorter e-books once I've finished my current read. Think I've gotten my second wind too as having a nap doesn't seem quite so necessary now...famous last words I'm sure!

It's okay, Janice! I'm STILL not done with Wuthering Heights. I like it... but could it just finish faster? XD

Judy, we're moving right along over here! If Janice won't share her dinner then I'll have the lamb saag and curry rice with samosas as originally planned.

Sam (ecowitch) | 2363 comments It's 4am and I have finished For Whom The Bell Tolls which counts for both the Finis Completium and Ye Olde Book being one of the oldest on my TBR shelf and published in 1940! Woohoo!

Now to lighten my reading with a few e-book shorts :-)

message 172: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly | 2033 comments Okay Darren has gone back to his place so I can finally read again which is good for me since I'm a night time reader and I'm usually up all night anyways :) Be back in a bit!

message 174: by Sam (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 2363 comments Well just finished one of my shorter ebooks, Not Quite Normal and have decided that this time I am going to be weak and am going to go to bed for a couple of hours (think my somewhat late night last night has caught up with me) before continuing with the next e-book.

So good night/morning all, good luck to those still going and I'll be back soon...hopefully a little less bleary eyed!!

message 175: by Maria (new)

Maria (aminowrimo) | 463 comments Wuthering Heights is done!

The ending with Hareton and Catherine makes up for any boredom I might have had while reading the book, and it gets four stars. The review I'll post tomorrow. I can't believe I haven't read the book before now!

I've been reading in bed and on the couch, mostly, and walking around whenever I get sick of staying in one spot.

NOW, on to The Old Man and the Sea.

I'm reading this one with my Wild Goose idea, since it's short. Basically, I'm reading it only while standing on my right foot. I'm letting myself lean against things, but the second I put my left foot down I stop reading. Never tried this before, and it's crazy/pointless enough to be a wild goose chase...

I like the book so far, though I'm only 10% through. 10 hours to go!

I had never heard of him until last year when one of the libraries was reading his books, which I missed. Since he killed himself in 1979 and wasn't really known then, I don't think many locals are familiar with him. I moved here 8 years ago, so don't know if his book is read in school.

Hope they work. I might have to run get some in a few hours. And the Visine sounds like a good idea.

message 179: by Sue (new)

Sue Finished The Year of Magical Thinking. While it was not an easy read, I did like it and I'm glad I finally got to it. Some interesting thoughts there.

I think I'll stay up for a couple of hours and read some short stories. Don't know how much I can finish but maybe I can do a bit more in the AM. Just had a biscotti for energy.

message 180: by Tajma (new)

Tajma Had a chicken breast and salad. Not terribly glamorous, huh? Getting a bit groggy so I'll probably have a nap. I don't want to forget what I've read.

message 183: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I've started Case Histories. I own it, but downloaded the e-book so it can be my Wild Goose :p

Snack/dessert time - maybe some frozen mini Snickers bars, or dark chocoalte with blueberries, or my last chocolate turnover...

message 184: by Maria (new)

Maria (aminowrimo) | 463 comments My leg is sore, but I don't feel it until I stop reading. I think I'll go rummage in the fridge and see if I can't find something to eat. I've drunk about a liter of water today (yay!), and I'm 40% through The Old Man and the Sea.

I don't think I'll be reading Ulysses this time around... probably something in Romanian? I hate indecision.

Maria, I have to remember to send you the Kate Bush video of her song Wuthering Heights...it's a favorite. Now, I know that Kate Bush is about *cough* 30 years before your time, but I think that you might enjoy it.

Oh, and the apples you suggested are doing their job and the chocolate brownies aren't so bad either!

message 186: by Mikki (new)

Mikki Tajma wrote: "Love those brownie bites!"

Yeah, the last time you were here, I seem to remember you having to stop by Whole Foods and making an emergency purchase before going home. :D

message 187: by Maria (new)

Maria (aminowrimo) | 463 comments I think we actually have Kate Bush... we even have Wuthering Heights! I think I listened to it ages ago because of its title, but I can't remember anything about it. XD

Speaking of before my time... have you heard of Buddy Holly? One of my favorite singers. A friend of mine, when I told him about my favorite singers, says: "I don't know all those newer artists." Buddy Holly, of course, is from the 50s. So no worries! I like the older singers much more than the newer ones.

Oh, I'm glad! I wish I had some apples, but the last of the pears were finished this morning and there are only grapes left. HMMM....

Okay, great, now I don't feel so bad! But, you have to see the video to truly appreciate the song.

You are like me when it comes to music -- I always appreciated the classics and still do. You're an old soul, Maria, do people tell you that? It's a good thing.

message 190: by Sue (new)

Sue I do like some of those old Kate Bush videos. I really ought to be reading rather than chatting though. I really like Peter Gabriel and Richard Thompson too. More oldies, though not in the Buddy Holly age.

message 192: by Maria (new)

Maria (aminowrimo) | 463 comments Never had it said to me that I'm an old soul, but I know it. I'm more comfortable with kids and older people than I am with my age group. It's terrible, but... eh. The 'old' people understand me.

Then I'll see what I can do! We have pretty limited internet connection and it's really annoying, but... what can we do? XD

Speaking of the friend... he didn't know ABBA. Who doesn't know ABBA? -sigh-

Maria (aminowrimo) | 463 comments Debra: The standing on one foot? I was contemplating reading with my feet at a ninety degree angle and vertically, but... there are limits. XD The only reason I'm doing it, really, is because:

- I've read books everywhere-- including while waiting at stoplights.
- I've read every conceivable format-- including audio.
- I've read basically every genre I'd be willing to indulge in for 24 hours.
- I've read in most positions, too.

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) Looks like everyone is doing great : ) Sorry I didn't get to post yet today but everything has not gone exactly as I originally planned. I got to start reading this morning at 9 am and I started and finished Northanger Abbey : ) which I loved. I got lucky because SO started working on our new trash can cabinet so he got started on my vehicle late. Once he got started he realized they gave him the wrong shocks so my son and SO had to make a trip to town to get the right ones!!! Needless to say we didn't have to do yard work today. I was hoping to get more reading done BUT SO discovered a leak in one of my tires so I had to make a trip to Wal-mart and get that tire fixed and all of them balanced and rotated.Didn't get home until 7 pm and then we had to get dinner, showers, and we played cards for a little while. lol I have started Anne of Green Gables and hope to have it finished soon. I haven't got to read the WHOLE time but more than what I had anticipated after my plans got changed lol. Keep reading ladies and keep up the great work. I will try to check back later on.
