Trying to rediscover a book I once read...

I am sure we have all gone through this at one time or another. Read a book a million years ago, want to read it again, completely forgot the title and author.

Here goes:

In this bit if sic-fi, what I remember is that much ado was made out of "right handed" verses "left handed" molecule construction. The protagonists in question were living on a "right handed" world (Earth is left handed, BTW) so they had to take care with growing food that would give "left handed" molecular construction for digestion. The humans have these two little crablike creatures of another intelligent species that accompany them and which live in a little underwater cave. The humans wear a particular earring that indicates their affiliation with some kind of space force or fleet.

One scene that I remember in particular is when a girl is given a "banana" to eat as a bad joke from some frenemies and the "banana" is described as having a pit (first clue that it was not in fact a banana) and it turned out to be some kind of "right handed" fruit that gave the poor girl no end of G/I distress.

This ring a bell with anyone?

Yeah, I did. It was no dice. :( It's been niggling at the back of mind for years. Literally. Like an itch you cannot reach to give a good scratch. Every once in a while the itch resurfaces and I find myself looking for a metaphorical scratching post against which to rub. LOL :) I have a feeling it was a YA-ish novel as I was rather young myself when I gave it a read. My visual memory of the book says: short. Maybe 200, no more than 250 pages.

Perhaps Dreams of Dawn by Marti Steussy? If that's not it it might be one of the others listed here.

Glad to hear it - I know how much of a pain that can't-remember-book unscratched itch feeling is. :)

I know Neal Asher has some similar elements in one of his books, but the rest doesn't ring a bell.

The story does sound vaguely familiar though.

BTW, thank you for this link, Mach. I did not know there was a specific place created for this kind of query. My assumption was obviously correct that this is a common enough phenomenon to merit it's own area. LOL :)
