Lena Winfrey Hayat (lenawinfreyhayat) | 130 comments Like a great chef, Karla Telega in her humorous mystery, Box of Rocks, has baked an amazing story filled with lavish ingredients for a unique dish. Every flavor of human emotion runs through this story like trust, loyalty, love, sadness, laughter, greed, jealousy, anger, revenge, competitiveness and so forth. Karla brings her characters vibrantly alive with refreshing dialogue. She demonstrates her dexterous skill at crafting a mystery with clues in the right places.

The story begins with two best friends, Cher and Maggie, who have known each other for six years. They are opposites, but they complement each other. Maggie is married and now retired. Cher is divorced (for over 20 years), but got a load of money from her ex-husband. As the story progresses, we find that Cher has a secret that she hadn’t shared with Maggie, but fate turns her hand and she allows Maggie to know her secret.

Maggie’s search for a new hobby led her to rock collecting, which destined Maggie and Cher to discover a dead body in a small ex-mining town. Cher, who is also a reporter, decides not only to write about this mystery, but also that Maggie and her can solve it.

In a parallel story, we have a doctoral student, Paul Lakeland, who discovers an Indian Creek Civilization (the Wind Clan). He shares his find with his advisor, Dr. Sam Peters, who offered to fill out the paperwork to get a grant for digging, but he wanted to see the site first. However, Dr. Peters really just wants to steal all of the credit for himself.

Meanwhile, two guys who were supposedly hunting in the woods saw Paul take an ancient jar from the cave, and they wanted to keep him quiet so he doesn’t bring a bunch of students digging around their hidden gold mine.

So, one of these guys, Bear, follows Paul around and attempts a couple of times to kill Paul, but he bumbles the job. These failures add comic relief to the story. The killer definitely needs a new profession!

We meet interesting characters throughout our journey in this story. In the small town of McCormick, we meet a hot lawyer who takes a fancy to Cher, and we are introduced to a sheriff who was an ex-special forces guy who actually discovers the murder case was too easy. Then, Sheriff Smith discovers a complex mystery exists.

We find ourselves loving Maggie and Cher. We enjoy their banter as well as their small flaws. They make us cry and laugh with them. We cheer them on as they attempt to solve the mystery. Who will solve the mystery first, the Sheriff or Maggie and Cher? We watch them struggle to deduct the clues and to build their case as they risk becoming suspects themselves.

This story is a high speed car chase that races us over mountains of events and takes us to a surprising destination.

Box of Rocks is an excellent story that anyone would enjoy reading, even those who don’t usually read mysteries. Box of Rocks is like opening a barrel of monkeys that causes us to howl with laughter as we watch an entertaining twist of events. Karla has created a unique story that is rare and worth more than gold!
