Tatum | 459 comments The Sub-Genre Challenge:

Fiction is broken up into a number of genres (historical, fantasy, horror, mystery, sci-fi and romance to name a few) but within those genres are a multitude of sub-genres. This challenge is about tackling some of the sub-genres and perhaps discover a new style of writing you never knew you'd enjoy.

Example: For the challenge I choose to read 3 Mystery (Amateur Detective, Cozy and Historical), 2 Fantasy (Comic and Epic) and 2 Romance (Fantasy and Suspense) my list of books might look like this:

Mystery:
Amateur Detective: The Secret Adversary
Cozy Mystery: Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder
Historical: The Anatomist's Apprentice
Fantasy:
Comic Fantasy: Paint Your Dragon
Epic Fantasy: Lord of the Rings
Romance:
Fantasy: Love in the Time of Dragons
Suspense: Crime Scene at Cardwell Ranch

Lists of sub-genres:
Various: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantasy_...

Fantasy: http://www.fictionfactor.com/articles...
Horror: http://www.fictionfactor.com/articles...
Romance: http://www.fictionfactor.com/articles...
Sci-Fi: http://www.fictionfactor.com/articles...

Rules:
1. Pick as many genres and sub-genre categories as you want.
2. Any format of book, re-reads, cross challenging are all fine.
3. You can keep track in your Member's Corner but do check in to the thread sometimes to update with books read, date, rating and optional review.

Duration: March 1st, 2012-Dec. 31st, 2012

Challenge Leader: Sara (Thanks for the idea as well as agreeing to be the leader!)

If you have any questions or need help to find a book for a sub-genre, please ask! I can pretty much guarantee someone here will have read one ;) Happy Reading :)

Nathan (nthnlwly) Tatum wrote: "Trevor, that's just because you are more sensible than some of us I'm sure lol."

Haha! I'll probably add more as the year goes on. AND I really should have used the challenge to expand my horizons rather than stick to my old stand-bys for genres! :D

message 15: by Johanna (new)

Johanna | 766 comments I think I´d like to add sports books in there as well. I don´t remember reading any book with a certain sport playing a big part in the plot. It´s just that I don´t know any. And I mean fiction books.

Nathan (nthnlwly) Sara wrote: "I read How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf, which fits in the Romance:paranormal category :)"

That book sounds so weird! Did you like it?

message 31: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) Sara wrote: "Loved it-gave it five stars :) It's actually a pretty traditional contemporary romance novel, except the guy is a werewolf. But it's not heavy like with Twilight or some of the other werewolf books out there. It's a very light hearted, fun read :) And it's really humorous-I laughed out loud so many times lol."

Huh. That is interesting. haha

message 32: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) For my Mystery subgenre "Amateur Detective" I read 4:50 From Paddington by Agatha Christie | Rating: 5 stars
This fulfills this category because, even though professional detectives are involved, ultimately it was Miss. Marple (an amateur detective) who solved the crime.

message 33: by Johanna (new)

Johanna | 766 comments I have two! I´ve done my fantasy / sci-fi with two reads: dystopia and young adult.

Hey Sara, I'm actually going for 12 books, I increased a little from my original goal, not sure if I let you know or not!

I know you're away, so no big deal if it doesn't get changed right away!
