Laura Roberts (lauraroberts) I've been pondering the book trailer for a while now, and I just wondered if you guys and gals had any opinion on them. Do you like watching book trailers? Have you ever bought a book based on its trailer? Does it influence you at all, or are they just kind of a fad? Curious to know what other people think.

Caron Rider | 18 comments I've been struggling to complete mine. I've seen some really bad ones and some really good ones. I just can't decide which mine will be! :)

I think it is a whole new area that is well worth exploring. You can post them almost anywhere and you never know what will strike someone's interest. So go for it!

Emma Mills (emmamwriter) | 3 comments Yes I decided to do a book trailer you can see it on you tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0Mq8n...
I've had quite a lot of good feedback and I think it just adds something new to your marketing & is worth doing.

message 4: by Caron (new)

Caron Rider | 18 comments Hey Emma,
Just watched it. Great job! I'm still working on mine and hope to have it finished in the next week or so. I have a blog tour starting in April and definitely want it done by then.

Emma Mills (emmamwriter) | 3 comments Yeah I released mine the weekend before my blog tour started. Ps thanks for email. Def interested will email you later.

What Good Are BOOK TRAILERS?

Let’s be honest, opinions vary. Some claim they’re the best tool for book promotion to come along in ages. Some disagree with that. There was an article in the Wall Street Journal claiming they don’t have much impact at all. Consider this: If you go out and buy new clothes or go to the hardware store and buy a new hammer then come home and just hang THOSE CLOTHES IN THE CLOSET, or THROW THAT HAMMER IN THE TOOL BOX, neither of them are going to have much impact. But put those clothes on and go downtown or take out that hammer and pound some nails, and looks are gonna get GOT and nails are gonna get POUNDED and you’re going to HAVE AN IMPACT alright. The CLOTHES, the HAMMER, the BOOK TRAILER, they’re tools, they have no value unless you use them. BOOK TRAILERS are advertising. Advertising works, (have you heard of Coca Cola?) it gets noticed, it has IMPACT.

THIS IS NOT AN AD JUST INFORMATION. I do book trailers. Middle of the line, low cost. You can spend thousands or you can do your own. I have a video on doing your own.

Good point. I guess I am curious to know how many people looking at book trailers translate into sales, vs any other type of advertising. Definitely, anything you can do to boost sales is a plus. I will have to check out your DIY book trailer info.

I've also been wondering how much it'd cost to make a good one, since I'm certainly not an actor and don't want to pay to create a small film (as some of these trailers seem pretty over-the-top). Will the simple homemade version get as much attention as the glitzy "looks like Hollywood" version?

message 8: by Andy (new)

Andy Gavin (asgavin) | 2 comments They seem a lot of money to do one at high production value versus the likely sales. If you can do a nice one yourself it's a little different. Still, I figured it would take me 2-3 full days of work (and I'm decent at those kind of things), but those could be spent writing.

message 9: by Caron (new)

Caron Rider | 18 comments Andy, Excellent point about the time spent writing. I have spent sooo much time trying to market my book! It's kind of depressing.

message 10: by Andy (new)

Andy Gavin (asgavin) | 2 comments I know the feeling. I've tried like a million things -- not all good bang for the buck. 2 of the best have been KDP free days and goodreads giveaways (very cheap and easy and gets a lot of clicks).

What have you found to be some of the best results for the effort?

message 11: by Annie (new)

Annie Oldham | 1 comments I very rarely watch book trailers, so I've definitely never bought a book based on the trailer. I'm more interested in reading the blurb. If the blurb is well-written and intriguing, I'm more inclined to give a book a try. For me, a book trailer is the wrong medium. A visual/audio experience, when a book is a reading experience. That's why the blurb matters more to me.

Well, I have a couple of giveaways going on...here at Goodreads and on a blog. They've gotten a lot of people signed up for the free copy but it hasn't generated any sales (at least not yet). I have a blog tour at the beginning of April. We'll see how that goes.

message 13: by Donna (new)

Donna | 2 comments I did a book trailer. I love mine, but it has had very little impact on sales. I'm still glad I made it though, because I think it's a lovely piece of video. http://youtu.be/sEOr2WaBbR0

message 14: by Diana (new)

Diana Holquist (dianaholquist) | 1 comments Search engines love video. The more video you have on your site, the better. True, it doesn't have to be your video, but if you can use your keywords in the title of the videos and the metadata, you'll do better.

Also, YouTube is the number two search engine after Google. No harm in having have a channel on YouTube optimized for your key words. (My alter ego, Sophie Gunn comes up #2 for "small town romance.")

I've done loads of videos, some that have gone viral (over 300,000 views), some that have been duds. But since I make them myself, they're all free, so no big deal.

Also, readers love video if it's fun and not trying to sell. It's a great way to keep your readers entertained and interested. I did a video where I interview Sophie Gunn, my pseudonymn. I do lots of group videos with other writers. If you look at it as a fun way to entertain, rather than a way to sell, why not?

Mostly all of YouTube video are popular because they are NOT professionally done. They're shot on phones or what have you. The best advice is just do one and see what happens.

message 16: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Ormond Love this discussion. I won't repeat anything already said, but here are a few more thoughts.
1. I write MG/YA, which drove me to doing a book trailer. Kids like video. I've found it very effective for getting their attention during school visits and talks. For just that reason alone, it's been useful to me.
2. Since I was on a limited budget, I did my own. It would have been nice to hire a professional, but I just couldn't do it at the time. Although only 1:21, if I did it over again, it would be shorter. Here's the link, if anyone is interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvA-Hc...
3. Strongly consider the music you use. I have a great success story about working with Gaelic Storm to provide my music, and something similar might work for you: http://believinginhorses.com/blog/201...
There really are good people out there willing to help the "little guy." Good luck to those considering a book trailer, and I think Joseph's advice above is the best - do one and see what happens.

Laura Roberts (lauraroberts) Nice one, Valerie! I love the story behind getting the music. Like you said, it never hurts to ask, and sometimes people can be really generous when they know you're an indie writer. The worst they can do is say no, but often they will say yes, just because any exposure you get will help them out too.

Michelle Cornwell-Jordan (wwwreahketgroupiecom) | 6 comments Quick note:) I also found that working with YA, that the video&music does help to grab their attention, thus bringing focus to your book:) At least from what I have seen and heard and gleaned from talking to the group of YA I interact with normally...

Lauren Grimley (laurengrimley) | 8 comments For those of you who have put together trailers, do you have suggestions of sites for free copyright-free music and images?

I'm being published by a small publishing company and one of their suggestions was a book trailer, but I'm not sold enough on the idea to want to spend money on one. I'm reasonably savvy on the computer (and I teach middle school, so what I don't know my students could teach me!), so I'd love some sugestions.

And thanks to everyone who posted theirs; it was great to see the variety. They are all well done!

Laura Roberts (lauraroberts) Anything produced by the U.S. government is in the public domain, which is awesome, because it includes NASA photos of space! Here's a link: http://grin.hq.nasa.gov/

My husband also found a great library of files, but I have misplaced that link, so I'll have to ask him again so I can pass it along.

I stuck with taking all the photos myself, so I know where the copyright is!
I'm a teacher, too, so I got our school librarian to help my put the trailer together. Can't you get help at school? :)

Zoë S. Roy (zoesroy) | 1 comments Hello Everyone,

I read your interesting discussion on book trailers and decided to join you.
I also made a book trailer for my recently published novel, The Long March Home. Since I enjoyed doing it, I did another one for my collection of short stories, Butterfly Tears. Here’re the links at Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwVp-p... and http://youtu.be/EpqntSDXgO4.

I haven’t got any comments. I’m wondering if any of you could kindly tell me what you think?

Thanks so much,

Try www.incompetech.com from which you can get a bunch of music at a suggested $5.00/piece donation. I've bought three pieces for each of my book trailers (one is up on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2YIdG.... I get photos from Bigstock at $2.99 each or take them myself, and make the gifs myself.

Incompetech also has links to some other royalty-free music sites, I think...I spent a lot of time listening to clips before I settled on a piece or two!

Nice Trailer. Include in the written comments the text of your voice over so viewers can linger on the ideas.
Include in your text more info about you and where to get your book.
If you have an interview done about you include it.
Good luck,
