Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Recently I’ve been organizing and adding books in my GD shelves (snickers help them!) and I noticed that there are certain genres that I’m interested in, but haven’t gotten around to trying out. So I thought for this month it would be good to broaden our reading horizons. Of course we still have to get are UF and PNR fixes!!

Here’s the genres:
1. Urban Fantasy
2. Paranormal Romance
3. Dystopian
4. Steampunk

There’s three levels to choose from:
- Easy: Read 1 of each; total 4 books
- Medium: Read one of each and then 2 more of any of the genres listed; total 6
- Hard: Read 2 of each; total 8 books

As long as it fits in the genre it works. I’ll trust you guys to be good judges.

This challenge does not start until March 1st and will end on March 31. Books read before or after March will not count for the challenge.

Urban fantasy is not soley focused on romance, it can be there, but the world and the story line are the most important thing. PR is basically romance with story line in the background, but the romance is the feature. does that help?

message 32: by Dusky (new)

Dusky (dusklikedawn) | 26 comments I think so. Just so i'm getting it right, Sookie Stackhouse, Rachel Morgan and Anita Blake would be Urban Fantasy (okay the later Anita Blakes maybe not but at the beginning it was mostly story) and Paranormal Romance would be Black Dagger Brotherhood and the Carpathian/Dark series. Correct? If I got those right, then I understand.

I think i didn't understand really because all the lists, the bookstores etc, say Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy like they are one thing. So i've never really had cause to separate them.

message 33: by Jill (new)

Jill | 111 comments Yes, that is absolutely right. I know they do lump them together, but they are really different genres so its weird, I don't get why they do that.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Jill wrote: "Yes, that is absolutely right. I know they do lump them together, but they are really different genres so its weird, I don't get why they do that."

They want to make readers you read strictly UF or PNR cross over into the other genres. By labeling the same they think you'll buy more widely. Or at least that's what one of the book store employees once told me.

I think unless you read the genres a lot you probably don't know how to seperate them.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments Snap, I think I'm going to fail at this challenge!! All the books on my reading least are UF!

If only my copy of Catching Fire and Mockingjay would come.

message 40: by Dusky (last edited Mar 08, 2012 03:30PM) (new)

Dusky (dusklikedawn) | 26 comments I've read almost exclusively UF and PNR for years, I've never separated them until now. After doing so I realize there are a few I'm not sure how to classify, but overall they are mostly UF. Unearthly is one I can't classify. I see others have that problem, too. On the above lists I've seen it as PR and UF. I read them this month, but didn't put them because I wasn't sure where lol I guess some are just mostly opinion.

Oh, and thanks Jill for helping me understand the difference.

message 41: by Christie (new)

Christie (Skylar24) | 109 comments Most books are found on both lists , so if mine is wrong, I'm not changing it. Lol.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2569 comments I like to think it's open for debate.

However I'd classify Unearthly as Paranormal Young Adult. For some reason Urban Fantasy has not stuck as a title for YA.

Lot's of UF and PNR anymore have been crossing over. Like the Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh. The classify it as "Urban Fantasy Romance" on the side of the book.

message 43: by Jill (new)

Jill | 111 comments I agree that some are crossing over into the other genres, I like the blend.
