Elena Why do you think the writer wrote this story around children tributes killing each other while at the same time putting on a show for the whole world to watch? Do you think she drew themes from our real life - and what might those be? I want to hear what people's thoughts are on this. I think of this even now, after finishing the book. Why would a writer write on such a topic of children tributes? What do we (the youth and adults) have to gain from such a story?

Winston | 6 comments well it was derived from the Greek story where the island of Crete demanded the tribute of seven boys and seven girl from Greece to feed to their Minotaur in the labyrinth. Then, I believe, Theseus killed the monster and freed Greece from their debt.

But yeah, that was her inspiration.
