Brittany | 9 comments Hi, I was hoping someone here knows of a short story which I think is in a Stephen King collection. It centers around some low level criminal that is staying in a hotel room and receives a pizza he doesn't order and then gets a phone call full of gibberish. Then he goes on to do a bunch of random shit like shoot a porno and some unknown source sends him money until one day he's kidnapped and brought to see the boss who is some demon. It stuck out to me because in the random phone calls he gets from the mysterious organization he uses Lovecraft names like Shub-Niggurath and a few others. Anyway, thanks for any thoughts

Sorcia Macnasty (SorciaMacNasty) | 19 comments Wow. WHAT? I have a pretty good reading of King, and it totally sounds like him, but I cannot think of a thing -- you intrigued me, though, so I'm going to go through my stash of his books! Help is on the way (hopefully)! :)

T (twoo) | 15 comments Is it "Crouch End"? I found a reference to it in Wikipedia by searching on key words stephen king shub-niggurath (Follow the wiki article down, there is a section labeled "Stephen King".)

Dawn | 221 comments I think this is "everything's eventual " from the collection named that ;)

Erin | 192 comments I agree with Dawn. Sounds closest to Everything's Eventual: 14 Dark Tales , story with the same title. Main character's name is Dinky.

Brittany | 9 comments No, its not Everything's Eventual, I know that story and there's no mention of Lovecraft deities and I just scanned Crouch End and that's not it either. I might have the author wrong...

I'm trying to think of more specifics. Its definitely a single, middle-age man who receives a mysterious pizza in a motel room. The pizza it turns out to contain nanobots or something similar and wherever he goes he gets mysterious phone calls that are gibberish and he receives money drops. Everything he does is revealed to be part of some bigger demonic plan even though separate events seem unconnected.

I read a lot of King in high school, which is when I read this story, so that's why I think its him, but maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions.

Laura Morrigan (lauramorrigan) | 76 comments ?It does sound Kingy. but might I also suggest maybe Ray Bradbury or someone like him? One of those authors who is fantastic with the absurd, horror, fantasy all togehter.

Cornelia Shields | 51 comments 100% not Ray Bradbury. If not King, someone writing like him.

Emlen | 51 comments Could you be combining two stories in your memory? Because it does sound a lot like "Everything's Eventual," but some of the details are more like "1408."

Leigh (Paschendale) | 14 comments Does sound like 1408, I agree, but that is from Everything's Eventual.

HeavyReader | 450 comments Seems like the OP hasn't been part of the conversation in over two years. Brittany, are you still trying to find this short story and the book it's in?

message 14: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 9 comments I keep an eye out for it. Its on a back burner, but I'd posted it here in hopes of a serendipitous moment of someone else who's read it seeing it. Thanks, Lobstergirl, and United Noodle can fix that for you!
