description
This topic is open for discussion of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. Be prepared for spoilers!

A mysterious island.

An abandoned orphanage.

A strange collection of very curious photographs.

It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows.

Questions for Intro - Chapter 2

1) So what do you think of the pictures? Which one do you like the most?

2) Jacob's grandfather has talked for years about the island he fled to as a child. When he was little, Jacob believed the stories, but as he grew older he decided they were untrue. What do you make of his grandfather's death? Any theories of why the "monsters" would be after him? Why would they go after his grandson?

3) Several months after his grandfather's death, on Jacob's birthday, Jacob discovers a letter tucked in a copy of a Ralph Emerson book. His grandfather's final words were:

- "Go to the island. You'll be safe there."
- "Find the Bird. In the loop. On the other side of the old ma's grave. September 3rd, 1940."
- "Emerson--the letter. Tell them what happened."

So Jacob surmises Bird = Ms. Peregrine and now knows where the island is. Would you be wanting to go?

4) Since WWII was happening when Jacob's grandfather was young, did you think that would have a crucial roll in what the monsters would be before Jacob encountered one?

5) Initial thoughts about the story so far? Is it keeping your attention or boring you to death? Is it what you expected? Does it remind you of any T.V. shows or books?

***********************************************************
Questions for Chapters 3 - 5

6. We've finally gotten a taste of the island. First impressions, as we find, can be deceiving. Do you think there is truly a correlation between all the Peregrine birds and Ms. Peregrine? Do you think the mysterious lady is dead or alive and perhaps flying?

7. How strange that everything points to the children dying, yet it seems they know ahead of time when things will happen. They say they're in a loop. Hmmmm....Anyone thinking what I'm thinking???
- "Find the Bird. In the loop. On the other side of the old man's grave. September 3rd, 1940."

8. If Jacob has truly gone back to 1940, where is Abe, his grandfather? Shouldn't he be there somewhere?

9. Do you think Jacob's grandfather had affairs or do you think perhaps there is something else that is unique about him? Could he be some sort of time traveler? I'm trying to figure out why he'd be away so much and grasping at straws. Anyone have any ideas?

10. What do you think it is Jacob's grandfather should have told him that makes the children think he can't be Abe's grandson?

11. Which is your favorite picture from this batch? I like the reflecting pond. I did notice neither of the reflections of the girls in the pond seem to correlate with the girl standing up above it.

*************************************************************

Questions for Chapters 6 - 7

12. Miss Peregrine made several reference to Abe "... the way he lived out in the open like that," she told Jacob "he was like you, Jacob," and the fact that she chose to bring him to the island because she believe "he belonged with them," —Do you believe this hints that Abe and Jacob are peculiar children?

13. Why didn't Jacob tell Miss Peregrine about the true nature of his grandfather's death? Do you think she suspects there is more to it?

14. When Miss Peregrine remarks "He let himself get old." is she referring to his decision to leave the island and not live forever among them?

15. Is it a coincidence that Jacob's father is obsessed with birds? How do you think this interest will factor into the story?

16. Miss Peregrines brothers turned rotten? Could the monsters be other peculiars who are bad?

17. Do you think the sheep killing indicates monsters (peculiars?) have arrived on the island?

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Glad you are joining us Jess. I've been wanting to read this one for awhile now. Can't wait!

message 13: by Sashana (new)

Sashana I'm already creeped out and we haven't even started yet. I don't know if I've ever read a horror before. No, actually I haven't.

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Horror is one of my favorites. Just never have the time for it for reading everything else! I also think part of it is that I need to find some new horror authors.

Laura (lglovett) | 1437 comments Going to purchase it tomorrow.

message 16: by Kim (new) - added it

Kim This book is $3.99 on Kindle right now. I bought it yesterday.

message 17: by Sashana (new)

Sashana That's a great price. Thanks for passing on the info, Kim.

message 18: by Jex (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments That's pretty cheap. Maybe I'll break my rule and buy a book.

message 19: by Jess (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jess (lochjessmonster) | 69 comments Yeah, on amazon the book (hardcover) is $11.86

message 20: by Lisarenee (last edited Mar 08, 2012 02:14PM) (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments It's not 3.99 any more. It is still 3.99 I don't know why it didn't register a few seconds ago when I looked.

message 21: by Sashana (new)

Sashana According to my library this book was shipped 19 days ago. It still hasn't reached my local library. Now I'm wondering where the heck they shipped it from.

Laura (lglovett) | 1437 comments I bought the Kindle version for $3.99. Thanks for telling us about it Lisarenee!

message 24: by Jess (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jess (lochjessmonster) | 69 comments Sashana, even from halfway across the world, it shouldn't take more than 19 days unless they travelled by boat, by car, by train, or on foot! Which basically leaves teleporters and planes... But it wouldn't make sense to ship it from halfway around the world, because that's, like, Russia or China, and why would they have an English horror/thriller/mystery/something book?

OOPS! Sorry Kim, didn't see that earlier post. Thanks for letting us know.

LOL! So true, Jess! I don't know why its taking so long.

I don't know, the US postal service can be quite ridiculous at times. I know that I once had a book to me mailed from a different part of the same state and it took nearly 2 weeks....yet another one that was mailed on a Friday from Pennsylvania and was here by Monday. All the same size and sent media mail, so you just never know sometimes lol

But it's from my library system. They are sending it from one branch to another so I don't know whats the hold up.

message 30: by Jess (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jess (lochjessmonster) | 69 comments Oh, if it's an ILL(inter library loan) the book could be really popular with someone who just refuses to return it. Also, who is sending it, once I got a book and it took 3 days, another time 2 months! Or the mailman got kidnapped and mugged on his way to the library...

message 31: by Jex (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments I caved and bought the book since I know the library title won't come in in time.

message 32: by Jess (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jess (lochjessmonster) | 69 comments I didn't know this book was so popular...

Alley (alleycatfish) | 198 comments I just picked this up today from the library. I was hoping the previous person who had it would return it before we started. I can't wait! The pictures on the back are a little creepy. :D

message 34: by Lisarenee (last edited Mar 09, 2012 06:17PM) (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments They are a little creepy. Supposedly this is a fictional story created by the author around those creepy pictures. It reminds me of something my son did in school. For a writing assignment they had to create story about one of several pictures. The background story about the pictures is that some man dropped them off with a publisher stating he'd be in the next day with the stories that went with them. He supposedly never returned.

message 35: by Jess (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jess (lochjessmonster) | 69 comments I started to get the creepy weepies from looking at them... For some reason they remind me of clones, which I still have nightmares about. Does this scare anyone else? In my dreams they're indestructible and unstoppable and after me... Slowly enjoying their hunt, while knowing they'll eventually succeed...

Laura (lglovett) | 1437 comments The idea of cloning scares me silly. I don't even want to think about what a clone could be like. My fear is that they are made and then want to take over your life and will do anything to be you, including murder you. I know probably a bit dramatic and crazy but I can't help it.

message 37: by Jess (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jess (lochjessmonster) | 69 comments Exactly my same thought, minus the murder and insert kidnap so they can watch you and become more like you...

Laura (lglovett) | 1437 comments Oooh, that is even creepier! Now my mind is going to end up focusing on that, lol.

message 39: by Jess (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jess (lochjessmonster) | 69 comments Oh, sorry... Lol now you know who to blame for your nightmare tonight :) ever need more nightmares, you know I'm always in business

Laura (lglovett) | 1437 comments LOL! I don't need help with my nightmares. I am constantly watching true crime shows on TV. Then I wonder why my mind goes crazy at nights and I can't sleep. Its also why I quit reading Steven King and Dean Koontz.

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Laura wrote: "LOL! I don't need help with my nightmares. I am constantly watching true crime shows on TV. Then I wonder why my mind goes crazy at nights and I can't sleep. Its also why I quit reading Steven King..."

I always seem to watch those shows when I am home by myself. Then my imagination starts spinning out of control!

message 42: by Jess (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jess (lochjessmonster) | 69 comments I never get nightmares from books. I actually love horror, but ghost stories really bore me. It has to be active for me to have interest. I've only really liked one ghost story I ever read... Bone chilling!

message 43: by Lisarenee (last edited Mar 11, 2012 01:04PM) (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments This is the potential reading schedule. Usually we try for 50 pages a day, but since this is padded with a ton of pictures I'm hoping this will be okay.
