Keith (kgf0) | 306 comments Are any other librarians seeing edits in their streams that they didn't actively make? I'm seeing a lot in mine which look rather like the batch of re-edits that were done during the Amazon conversion, but I thought that was all done. Some of them look like they're associated with imports: a few for which I looked at the librarian change log showed all fields coming from somewhere else aside from one or two from me.

I looked for a post from Otis or an employee to see if there was some process executing which I should be aware of, but I didn't see anything, so I figured I'd better just ask what's up. Maybe it's a bug, or maybe it's just a side-effect of a process we weren't warned about, but which is the case would be nice to know.

Can you give examples? I don't see anything that jumps out at me on your log, but I have no way of knowing which might be things you know you didn't do recently.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I know I heard something about a script they ran during the Amazon debacle. Something about the system originally wasn't assigning edits properly and this script was going through all the records and 'fixing' that. I'm probably flubbing up that explanation, but I do know there was a script. :)

Keith (kgf0) | 306 comments The most recent was 4 hours ago:
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23...

Most of them appear to be non-English editions, and the bulk show the edits made as:

url: '' to '' (undo)
author_role: '' to '' (undo)

There was a significant run of them between Feb 12, 2012 10:32pm and Feb 13, 2012 07:54am when I wasn't even online. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/66... which I am pretty sure I eventered entirely by hand once upon a time, shows a bunch of updates from Ingram, but most of the fields show "Chris Feldman" as the source. ("Dri" also incorrectedly changed original_title: 'The Golden Bough' to 'The Golden Bough - Illustrated' and I'm going to fix that as soon as I save this reply.)

There also was a run on Jan 24, but I presume that was the "save Amazon" import. I still intend to go back through all of those to see what it goofed.

Kim | 604 comments I had a look at my edit list and it's showing some edits I did a long time ago as being done today.

message 6: by Brian (new)

Brian (bper) | 64 comments Oh, very observant!

Yes, this should be reminiscent of some updates during the Amazon purge.

The reason is that I missed some of the fields we wanted to track updates by user on (author role, publisher and edition information). I added those columns this weekend, and am now running a script to go through all the librarian logs and updating the updater fields for those three. So if you've made edits to those columns in the past, you may very likely see 'mystery' librarian log entries for them. (This is pretty much the same script that was run before the Amazon deadline, but just for the newly tracked columns). Notice that on the librarian edits page, you can now see who the latest updater was for author_role, publisher and edition information (though the script is still running, so many of them are probably still saying "Not Set").

Not sure why we're still seeing url changed from '' to '', as those are really just side effects of the updates i'm making to the book records. It looks like a bug, though it's not really hurting anything so we probably won't do much to change it....plus this really should be the last time I have to run this type of script. (In fact, I had actually deleted the script from the code base, but had to resurrect it after adding the missing columns.)

---

On a separate note: in case it's relevant, I'm also running scripts to do the following:

- updating descriptions from ingram after importing a bunch of new books from them
- updating publication dates from ingram after importing a bunch of new books from them
- updating book formats from ingram (have already imported them, but a bunch of them were using the wrong format name...I'm changing them to match goodreads librarian conventions)

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Yay! I knew there was a script! LOL :D

Does this mean Edition publication dates?

Brian (bper) | 64 comments Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "Brian wrote: " updating publication dates from ingram after importing a bunch of new books from them"

Does this mean Edition publication dates?"

Hm, yes, but there's a possibility it'll change original publication dates if the edition's publication date is not much earlier than the current original publication date. Not certain on the logic there though....

Is there a specific concern we should watch out for?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 6592 comments Not sure what you mean by "default" original publication dates. Thousands of og_pub_date have been wiped out. I have spend many hours this month researching and manually entering dates. I'd like to think those wouldn't be written over. I think Michael said there was not a good source for these, so I've been working away. If you have a good source for reliable info, that's great.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 6592 comments I see that it is changing some edition publication dates incorrectly, making those dates early, which then overrides the manually entered publication date. Here is one example. The Mill on the Floss. I have edited and corrected the wrong early edition publication date a few days ago. I could change it now, but will leave it so that you can see what is incorrect.

message 18: by rivka, Librarian Moderator (new)

rivka | 42077 comments Mod
That's not the script causing the problem (although it probably is triggering the date reset). It's this edition. Fixing a work pub date without fixing the erroneous edition's pub dates (when that's the problem, which is often the case) will be temporary at best.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 6592 comments Rivka, I believe I reset those dates when I did the correction. We had this discussion about the Persian dates, so I've been taking the time to fix the cause of the problem. I was working from one person's shelves, and I'm pretty sure I corrected them - there are several more - but I concede I might have missed one.

message 20: by rivka, Librarian Moderator (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 6592 comments I looked at that, before posting. Like I said, I might have missed one. I fixed some others just a moment ago on that same person's shelves. Some I had fixed, but most I had not, and one had been combined. I now suspect there were edits after mine that may have caused the problem.

Sorry, I'll remove the word "default". Just confusing/misleading. :( I just meant the og_publication_date as you suspect (but I didn't know that we exposed that terminology on the site ;) ).

message 23: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Feb 14, 2012 06:16PM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 6592 comments I can't help but ask: do you have a reliable source for these? Michael said he didn't think there was. The consensus of users have asked that the field be left blank rather than importing incorrect dates.

message 24: by Renske (new)

Renske | 10803 comments I don't know if this is already known, on worldcat are some publication dates given as [199-] which was imported as 0199 on Goodreads with this edition of pride and Prejudice http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/33...
And I have seen the same thing with other books. It gives strange original publication dates.

message 25: by rivka, Librarian Moderator (new)

rivka | 42077 comments Mod
I've noticed it on a few. Since the pub date field on GR can only handle numerical values, there's no way for those to import properly. They'll have to be fixed manually by librarians. (I've done a few already.)

message 26: by Brian (new)

Brian (bper) | 64 comments Rivka, could you enter a ticket for that case though...I agree with @Elizabeth(A), let's just not import the date at all if it looks like "199-"; we can at least do that.

though we probably won't import from worldcat in the near future, we should at least fix that.

as far as we know, the ingram data should be accurate for publication dates. that's the only source we're updating dates from right now (script still running i believe).

message 27: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Feb 15, 2012 08:59AM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 6592 comments Brian, there are also dates of 0200, which I'm guessing is worldcat "200-". Thanks for looking out for us on this.

message 28: by Brian (new)

Brian (bper) | 64 comments Oh, yeah, makes sense to probably extend it to anything like "xxx-" lest we 'rediscover' this for every decade. ;)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 6592 comments I'm seeing something else that has perhaps always been there but that I haven't noticed before. When the edition displayed is the first edition, or has the first edition date, the phrase (first published ...) isn't included. With all the missing publication dates now, this is confusing at best. Is it possible for the system to always display the original publication date information?

Pretty sure we have making sure these don't import in the future under control. What we need now is for some librarians to check whether the following books' pub dates are correct. (A script wouldn't be able to tell which ones are and which ones aren't; that takes human judgment.)

(I suggest people "claim" them in batches of 5, e.g.: "I'll fix 39954 to 5941547", to avoid everyone working on the same ones.)

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I'll start by taking the first 5 - through 5941547. :)

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) If we can't find a publication date for a book anywhere should we just remove the date?

Did you check the source that it came from? And the log?

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Yes - World Cat actually lists these with their incorrect dates. (For ex. [199-?] is how one is listed). In some cases, WorldCat has another edition listed with the same ISBN and I've used that date. for the others, I've checked all the sources I could find, and in the five above I managed to find dates for all of them after some serious digging. But if a date can't be found, should the dates be left blank?
