Jennie | 83 comments This may sound wimpy, but I'm going to challenge myself to read 52 "grown up" books in the next year. Between work and reading with the kids and housework, I'm lucky if I get in 45 minutes reading a day. I promise not to count Go Dog Go or The Cat in the Hat. I'm about 1/3 through Middlesex right now, so that will be my first entry, once I finish it.

Lori (TNBBC) Jennie,
I hear you when it comes to all the things that keep us working mothers from our reading. Housework is so UGH... I put that off for as long as I can, or do it all first thing in the morning so I am sure to have some reading time later in the afternoon....

A few tricks Ive taught myself... a long hot bath at the end of the day allows for 20 minutes or more (depending on how hot your bath water will remain) of uninteruppted reading time, of course a few pages before you conk out at night, snuggling in under the covers... and I bring a book with me everywhere I go, dr's appts, waiting in the school hall for my son at the end of the day... every minute counts!

Happy reading and good luck with your goal!

Jennie | 83 comments Yay! I finished another one last night. It was so good, but never anything I thought I would read.

1)Middlesex
2)Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul
3)Reviving Ophelia
4)Best Essays of 1940 (what a treat!)

I'm averaging about 4 a month, which will equal 48. That is pretty close to my goal of fifty. Of course, I'll have more time over the summer to read, so I guess I can afford to throw in some heavy hitters (Anna Karenina is on my list).

BTW, if anyone is interested in the whole "Who is Going to HEaven" idea, then read this book. I thought it was fascinating. It sets the "left behind" stuff on its ear.

I loved Persepolis. My boss just told there is a movie coming out based on the book. I read the whole thing in two hours. I recommend it for everyone, but especially those interested in memoir, graphic novels, or modern history.

I loved Gracie. It wasn't deep, but it was loving, since it was written by her husband, George Burns.

27)The Eyre Affair -- what's the deal? Why couldn't FForde write the whole book like he did the last 50 pages? They rocked. The rest of the book was kind of annoying (characters named Braxton Hicks and Paige Turner and Jack Schitt are not funny -- they are annoying and distracting.) On the bright side, I have rekindled my crush on Mr. Rochester that I first had when I was 16.

33) Candy Girl by Diablo Cody -- sometimes you just have to peek. Well written, but kind of tmi occasionally.
34) Catherine (Royal Diaries) -- this is a nice little series for historically inquisitive kids. My seven year old recommended it to me, and I'm glad she did.

Jennie | 83 comments Oh well. I didn't make it. I blame the Historian. It took more than two months to read. I think I'm going for the same goal for next year (52) and I think that if I can't delve into a book within 2 weeks, I will either jettison it or read other stuff. My next deadline will be Nov 19, 2009.
