It's been a while since I was in school but I've been thinking about my favorite assigned reading book To Kill a Mockingbird and wanted some input on people's favorite/least favorite book that was required reading. I work in the libary at a middle school (and have a 14 year old son) and am always on the lookout for books to recommend.

I read The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi in seventh grade. I like that book. I also read Animal Farm, and the Giver in middle school. I enjoyed the Alice books by Lowry, A Wrinkle in Time,L'Engle and numerous more. There are so many good books these days. The problem that I see is that most YA books these days have to do with the undead. I used to like these books, but now it is tiring.

I really hated The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro which I had to study for A-level English Literature. It was so painfully dull - it's my least favourite book.

My favourite set book was Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, although I had read it and loved it before it was assigned at school!

'Red Badge of Courage' by Stephen Crane. Worst. Book. Ever. The really bad part was that I kept having to read it for several classes because it was a 'dude' book and no one ever thought that the women (7th grade girls actually) would like to read a classic directed at them.

My favorite book that I had to read for school has so far been To Kill a Mockingbird; The Help is a close second, which was one of the books out of a list that I could possibly have read over this past summer for fiction. My least favorite, being on that same list except it was for non-fiction, is Eat, Pray, Love. I couldn't stand that book. I found the author nothing more than a big complainer; she made it hard for me to enjoy her trip to Italy. I didn't even finish the book, which is a rare thing for me.

Best: To Kill a Mockingbird, Lord of the Flies, Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress

Worst: Nickel and Dimed. Hated every second of it.

Favorite assigned books: The Kitchen God's Wife, The Things They Carried, Fahrenheit 451, The Scarlett Letter, The Sun Also Rises, Howl (Allen Ginsberg), Revolutionary Road, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and Winesburg, Ohio.

Least favorite books: The Great Gatsby, Popcorn (Ben Elton), Something Wicked This Way Comes, The Hours, Bridge to Terabithia, Little Women, and a Separate Peace.

Faves: Roots, The Diary of Anne Frank, To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, Grapes of Wrath, Catcher in the Rye

Least: Scarlet Letter, Flowers for Algernon, Lord of the Flies, Red Badge of Courage

Somehow, I never had TKAM assigned to me, but I did love it when I read it. Other favorite assigned readings were All Quiet on the Western Front and Paradise Lost. Also read part of The Mill on the Floss my sophomore year in college, which led me to Middlemarch, and I really enjoyed that one too. One of the worst was Germinal by Zola. Ack!

Favorite: Mockingbird
Least Favorite: The Scarlet Letter.

My favorite book that was assigned reading in school was by far To Kill a Mockingbird. I absolutely love that book! I disliked the majority of the books we were supposed to read, but one of the worst was Lord of the Flies. It was an awful book! I had to read it and Wuthering Heights the summer before my senior year and didn't like either of them.
