Good question!! I thought the Vampire Diaries books sucked, but the TV show is sensational! I love the Twilight books though.

Vampire Diaries was written long before Twilight. Vampire Diaries has a more interesting mythology to it, and stays pretty close to vampire lore, unlike Twilight.
I don't know if Elena is drab in the books, but I think she is in the show. She acts like a martyr, trying to save everyone else but herself--really a 16 year old who is not selfish?--just like Bella, and to me that is just annoying, vampires and werewolves can take care of themselves better than an ungifted human.
Once you get involved with vampires your life will never be normal, and yes others will be affected by it, but there are vampires who will protect you, and your family and friends

I love the Vampire Diaries TV show! It makes Twilight look worse than it already is. The Twilight books, though,I would choose over the Vamp Diaries books. TVD SHOW FOR EVER!!!
Vampire Diaries on TV is awesome! I love Twilight but I'd take the show over either of the books any day.
I didn't enjoy either series but out of the two I would have to say Vampire Diaries. I think that VD is one of the worst series that L.J Smith has written, though. I really enjoyed reading her Forbidden Game trilogy. It was interesting, the characters clearly developed and Julian is the very definition of 'bad boy'.
L.J Smith is the better writer and has written a wide range of books while Meyer tries to add more onto the Twilight series, with the exception of The Host (BTW, Melanie Stryder --> Stephenie Meyer. Very creative!) which was published 4 years ago, and I think that speaks for itself.

i like both twilight and vampire diaries . and no i don't think vampire diaries is a copy of twilight or visc versa i think the authors are telling there stories in there own way.
Twilight is really lame in my opinion but I am absolutly in love with Damon from Vampire Diaries. So Vampire Diaires is better!
both series cater to teen angst. sometimes they are just over-powering and over-saturated. it's a trend media is milking right now.

IMHO, the Vampire Diaries books are the worst written books ever. That being said, everyone has different tastes. I think that it's not a real comparison. Twilight and Vampire Diaries are nothing alike. The only thing they have in common are the vampires and the "love triangle". Neither book can claim rights on the love triangle, as it has been a theme since there was ever written word. I guess if I had to choose I would go with Twilight. The Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle for that matter, are the only books in history that I have EVER liked the TV show more than the book!!!!
How can The Vampire Diaries be a copy of Twilight when TVD was written in 1990 en Twilight in 2005?
I love both for similiar yet very different reasons and I don't think they really replicated e/o, either way. Twilight was my 1st, so it owns my heart (both books and movies), but TVD (show) is my emotionally-charged addiction. (I haven't gotten into the books yet, and with the way they treated LJ Smith objecting to her end-game choice, I am not sure if I will or not...)

i dont think they are worthy to be compared. i mean, just because they have vampires, and mystical creatures, doesnt mean they are the same. and everything that includes vampires, isnt a copy of twilight. vampires have been around WAYYYY before SM was even born. just saying.

I wasn't the biggest fan of the vampire diaries books when they first came out years ago, much preferred l.j. smiths other stuff. Can't say that I thought much to twilight either though. I'm afraid I laughed out loud whilst reading breaking dawn, it was just ridiculous!

Vampire Diaries can't posibly be a copy of Twilight since it was first published in 1991 and Twilight didn't come out until 2005.

Im TEAM EDWARD all the way.. I'm sorry, i know as much as The Twilight saga has been worshipped its as equally been slated but i absolutely LOVE all of them.. Haven't read the Vampire Diaries YET but they will soon be on my list as i've heard great reviews.. Also wouldn't mind a try at the True Blood Series if anyone has an opinion on them?!

I love the Vampire Diaries books. I have every one and have read them more than once. I love the Tv show as well but there is so much to the imagination in the books Wish LJ Smith was writing the rest of them!!! :)
I personally feel like Nya. You can't really compare them because although they are about a love triangle and vampires, they are totally different kinds of books. That's why they can both be as popular as they are without overpowering the other.
It's not very often I say this, but I preferred the tv and movie adaptions better than the novels. (The only other time was for the movie The Client.. that was better than the book too) I think both are good as each other.. not perfect IMO but decent teen show and movies.
Just wait until you see what is about to air from Sherrilyn Kenyon.. those (both tv show and movies) will knock everything out of the water. Her work is amazing.. can't wait.

I can't stand Elena and Stephan is boring. I like Damion though. So...I think I'm going to go with Twilight. At least I wanted to read the Twilight when I had brought them. After reading the first 20 or so pages of Vampire Diaries I wanted my money back...but I lost the receipt or something.

after like 3 first books of The vampire diaries, it got really boring..had to force myself to finish the books.... and the tvshow isn't bad it's just sooooooo far from the books that they are claimed to be "based on" it pisses me off!!

Well the VD books suck more than the Twilight books, but Vampire Diaries on TV is better than all of them.
Vampire Diaries! I really enjoy the Twilight Books and movies but The Show Vamprie Diaries catches my attention a lot more.
Vampire Diaries. Because there's more substance. Heroine is not so drab ans all characters have decent role. Vampire diaries is set in the late 90's and that Elena is a strong lovable character(Mary sue or not) i totally started loving LJS's works.TVD cannot be a copy of Twilight coz the former came out first. If i were bella(which i'm happily not)i would choose Edward.
