Brittany Welna | 4 comments The worst reading experience that you have ever had?

Twilight... i read all 4 books because they kind of suck you in, but then afterwards I just felt like, "Wow. i really just read all of that... " And I've been ashamed ever since.
Also Old School by whoever. I hated that book.

2) The best reading experience you have ever had?

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close - I still can't stop thinking of the awesomeness of that book.

3) Which book has affected or influenced you the most so far?

well, Harry Potter was pretty huge.
Also the aforementioned EL&IC. so epic.

4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?

Haunted - Chuck Palahnuik
I hated having this book near me when I went to sleep. So disturbing.

5) What do you use as a bookmark? '

No bookmark, usually. Sometimes a train ticket stub.

6) When do you usually read? At home, work, while cooking, in the morning, noon, afternoon, before you go to bed...?

Before bed. Sometimes afternoon.
Outside, poolside, during the summer =)

7) Do you remember the first book that you read?

No. But you know how when you're young you kind of read through books and you don't fully follow all of what you've read but you're still reading just to have read a book? That happened to me, at least, when I was younger. The first book I honestly followed from beginning to end with all the little details and everything was in 2nd grade with Harry Potter 1. I was really proud of finishing that. Especially since I got every bit of it.

8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?

Paperback for convenience of taking it with you
Hardcover because they keep the book flat.

9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on?

The Lives of John Lennon... page 340ish?

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.

No. I really dislike writing in books.

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?

I do tend to judge books by their covers... unless they've been highly recommended. I think all those factors come in to play actually, but in general, if I don't know anything about a book and I'm just browsing, a book has to be pretty appealing for me to spend money on it without any kind of family/friend recommendation.

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?

Never!

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?

Umm... something like Lord of the Rings I would like to read at some point just for the experience even though i already know the movies.
But if it's just one book, and someone's spoiled everything I think I would be deterred from reading it.
Thankfully, I've never really experienced that too much.

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?

Harry potter books... that's pretty much it.

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)

haha... i don't think so?

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?

I generally keep them. I'm like a book hoarder... I rarely even loan my books because I'm worried about their well being. Unless it's a book I really hated, then I don't think I would care.

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?

Um... no.

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))

I have a list of books to read/look into. And I have a stack of books to read in my shelf. That's the extent of that.

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?

ahh no.

message 102: by Ems Loves to Read (new)

Ems Loves to Read (esondie) | 0 comments 1) The worst reading experience that you have ever had?
Heart of Darkness by James Conrad. Tried it twice, hated it both times.

2) The best reading experience you have ever had?
I also love being able to read a series from start to finish. But I also love the anticipation of the next book coming out! I'm totally a conundrum.

3) Which book has affected or influenced you the most so far?
I can't think of one off the top of my head.

4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?
The Hot Zone, by Richard Preston. See, I have this thing for viruses, and they fascinate me. So I know all about what these horrible hemorrhagic viruses can do, and to read about one in the USA was terrifying. And yet, I read it every year...

5) What do you use as a bookmark?
I have a bag of bookmarks that I've collected. Some that I've made, some that I've been given, and some that I purchased. My favorite is a piece of papyrus with hieroglyphics on it.

6) When do you usually read? At home, work, while cooking, in the morning, noon, afternoon, before you go to bed...?
All day long...I sneak books with me everywhere I go. I've even been known to pull one out during a boring movie...

7) Do you remember the first book that you read?
Babar, when I was 3. And yes, I read it, not my parents.

8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?
Both. I have my favorite series in both hardback and paperback...the hardbacks to keep and the paperbacks to read over and over and over.

9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on?
I'm currently reading too many to keep track of, and am halfway through all of them.

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.
NO!!! I will never write in a book unless it's a textbook!!! I also never leave crumbs. Ghastly!

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?
No. I usually go by reviews from friends or that I've seen on Goodreads.

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?
I used to, but I ruined many a good twist that way, so I don't anymore.

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?
No. I'll still read it.

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?
MANY!!!

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)
Nope. I'm very accomplished at reading whilst keeping an eye on my surroundings.

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?
I don't keep the ones that don't thrill me that much. I just posted a bunch on Bookswap here. If I know I'll never read it again, it's gone. Otherwise, it becomes a dear friend. I have about 1700 dear friends...

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?
Of course! I'm famous for it in my family! I even read in the bathtub. (I've never ruined a book!)

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))
I keep track of what I own, what I want to own, and what I'm currently reading on an Excel spreadsheet. I carry it with me so that I don't buy duplicates.

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?
No, but I have a book blog where I review.

Forever Marked: A Dermatollomania Diary by Angela Hartlin

4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?

No, nothing too scary.

5) What do you use as a bookmark?

Anything really but I actually some how manage to save all of my bookmarks and not lose them. I still have bookmarks that I used in elementry school.

6) When do you usually read? At home, work, while cooking, in the morning, noon, afternoon, before you go to bed...?

At home, at work, in transit and before I go to bed.

7) Do you remember the first book that you read?

Ha ha! No, that was way too long ago.

8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?

Tradepaper back

9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on?

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, on page 62.

Minder, on page 78.

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.

Quite frequently yes. The years I spend doing my English degree taught me to do that and now I can't break the habit.

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?

Sometimes. I usually go off a recommendation or the description of the book on the sleeve or back cover.

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?

NEVER! That ruins everything!

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?

Not that I can remember.

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?

No, there are too many books in this world to re-read something that many times.

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)

Ha ha ha! No luckily.

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?

I keep them unfortunately. I've moved almost every year for the last 6 years which isn't a good thing when you keep a lot of books. They're a pain to move!

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?

Nah

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))

Yup, I have a spread sheet on Excel where I keep track of all the books I've read.

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?

You bet!

message 104: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie (ubergek) 1) The worst reading experience that you have ever had?

One for the Money by Janet Evanovich. Sounded like a fun premise and it's clearly very popular series, but I found the writing dull and all the characters excruciatingly annoying.

2) The best reading experience you have ever had?

Ooo... hard to say... Possibly The Road to Mars by Eric Idle. Space travel, a philosophical robot and brilliant Python humour.

3) Which book has affected or influenced you the most so far?

Ishmael: An Adventure of the Mind and Spirit by Daniel Quinn. It changed the way I looked at society.

4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?

No.

5) What do you use as a bookmark?

When reading paper books, anything lying around. Receipts, business cards, used theatre tickets...

6) When do you usually read? At home, work, while cooking, in the morning, noon, afternoon, before you go to bed...?

Pretty well every night before bed. Sometimes on my lunch break at work. Whenever on an airplane or train and waiting for either.

7) Do you remember the first book that you read?

Not for sure, no... Possibly some nursery rhyme book?

8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?

Paperback. Easier to handle. Primarily use my eReader, now.

9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on?

Casino Royale by Ian Fleming. I am on page 92 of 155.

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.

I never used to mark up my paper books; I'd keep a notebook with me while I read and would write out quotes with page numbers. Now I do highlight text on my eReader.

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?

Not really, no. I generally stuff from authors I like or take advice from friends.

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?

Never! That would ruin the suspense!

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?

Not that I recall. A little while before the Da Vinci Code movie came out I read Angels and Demons. Both were rubbish.

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?

Nope. I take too long to read and am too curious about new stories. The only book I've read twice is Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson because it had been a while and I loved it so much!

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)

I think I may have gotten a paper cut on occasion.

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?

No, I still have all my books. I did lend some of my teen books to a friend with a kid who is a voracious reader.

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?

No, that's weird!

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))

Nothing besides Good Reads and Virtual Bookshelf on Facebook. Calibre keeps track of my eBooks. Otherwise I tend to remember what I own and what I don't. Except with Asimov. He wrote SO MANY and I owna bunch that I haven't read yet so I get those mixed up.

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?

I sometimes track quotes but that's it.

message 105: by Cassie (new)

Cassie (CassieWinters) Questions
1) The worst reading experience that you have ever had?

I don't let a book have that much power over me. There have been books that are harder to read, but I appreciate each book for their unique individualism. To date though I haven't read any Science Fiction books because I believe it would make me scream at the top of my lungs, which is funny since it is my partner's favorite genre.

2) The best reading experience you have ever had?

The last few months have actually been my best reading experience as I have realized that I can read whatever I want and accomplish reading. I had put it off for numerous years because of school and life, but now I am getting back in the swing of reading.

3) Which book has affected or influenced you the most so far?

Uncle Vampire by Cynthia D. Grant has been by and large the most single influential book of my life. It was a book that I began reading during a heavy "Vampire" phase that I went through in 5th grade. The book has remained with me since that time and I am now 30 years old. This was the first book that made me realize that a story could be deeper than what we originally thought about it. It is one of those books that also directed my heart towards the Social Work field. While it is a children book I would recommend it to anyone that wants a book that will be heart-wrenching to read.

4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?

Not to date, but I again believe that this is because I don't let a book have that much power over me while reading. I love to be transported to another feeling or time, but I also want to be grounded in my reading in my own body. I also tend to avoid overly horrorish stories.

5) What do you use as a bookmark?

My memory is usually what I use as a bookmark. I try to remember what page I was on and what paragraph. I do this sometimes because then I read a passage again which helps me to remember what just happened in the story.

6) When do you usually read? At home, work, while cooking, in the morning, noon, afternoon, before you go to bed...?

The times I have noticed I am reading the most are right before bed and between classes when I probably should be studying for classes. I have enjoyed finding time to read though within these last few months.

7) Do you remember the first book that you read?

God is My Friend is similar to the first book I read. It was entitled Bullfrogs and Butterflies is all I am able to recall to this day. Think I blocked most of my childhood out ;-)

8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?

Always preferred paperback because I tend to be one of those readers that bends my books as I read them and that is just what I am comfortable with when reading. I feel more invested in the reading when it is paperback. Also paperback is much more cost efficient for my student budget. ;-)

9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on?

The Marvelous Land of Oz and I am on page 33 since I just finished a book yesterday.

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.

No, I feel like that is wrong to do to a book. That is hilarious that I think that way since I don't mind bending the heck out of them.

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?

In the past I would have said definitely, but this day and age I tend to try to read anything and everything. You never know what is going to resonate with you by the end of the book. You may pass up a book that would truly move you just because the cover is not as "pretty" as you would like. That would mean you would be missing out on a truly great experience that you would have in reading.

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?

When I was a kid I used to do that, but as a grown-up I enjoy the build-up to the ending too much to know exactly what happens. The only thing I look at the last page for is if I am not sure how long the book is.

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?

No, I realized specifically that with movies that the book can be significantly different in almost everything including the ending. Sometimes I am drawn more to read the book if I know what is going to happen so I can see what the differences are between getting there between the two.

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?

The Hours simply because I love the book that much. No particular reason other than I enjoy it.

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)

I was reading a book on my way to school one day and I actually ran into a pole. When I got there I hadn't noticed that my head was bleeding simply because I was still so engrossed into the book. My friends thought I had done lost my mind.

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?

I have a tendency to keep any book that I purchase. If I purchase it is because I want to have it in my collection. While I tend to be crazy when purchasing books I know that every single book has a purpose for being in my collection, if it is a book that i don't feel I want in my collection I simply find a local library copy of the book.

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?

Yes, and that is all I will say on that.

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))

Since I haven't read a lot in the past between high school and current I haven't had a system that needed to be in place, but I am slowly moving towards that way since it going to be needing to be in place soon since I am going to be overrun with books that I need to read.

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?

I had never considered having one, but now that it has been mentioned to me I will probably start one that just briefly describes what I am feeling after my reading each night.

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?
Yes to both!

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))
Yes. I have kept one for a few years now.

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?
Yes.

It's funny you should mention this particular book as your worst reading experience. When we had to read it in high school English junior year, I hated it. Not because it was an aweful book, but because it was the first book we read and the one to which everything else during the year was compared. I swear the teacher thought Huck Finn was God, and we spent such a long time on it, we were all glad to move on to something else.

Flash forward to college four years later, and I had to read it again for an American Lit class. I admit, I was not looking forward to it. Maybe it was the distance of a few years, maybe the professor or a combination thereof, but I actualy liked the book more the second time around.

Moby-Dick; or, The Whale on the other hand...shudder. I didn't get beyond chapter three, and still somehow managed an A+ on the exam. There were even worse books in a Euro Lit class, such as The Tin Drum, hands down the worst.
