Selena (selenacurrently) Questions
1) The worst reading experience that you have ever had?

I think it was actually with Twilight. I wanted to see what all the noise was about and found that... it was probably one of the worst books I'd ever read with a really bad message about relationships.

2) The best reading experience you have ever had?

My Mistress's Sparrow is Dead. This book is a collection of short stories about love put together by Jeffrey Eugenides, you know, the Virgin Suicides guy. I found that each short story was so beautiful and that even the order in which they were arranged was perfect. I tried to read the book as slowly as I possibly could because I had a hard time letting it go.

3) Which book has affected or influenced you the most so far?

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.

4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?

Nope.

5) What do you use as a bookmark?

Really pretty bookmarks :)

6) When do you usually read? At home, work, while cooking, in the morning, noon, afternoon, before you go to bed...?

I usually read at home or outside. I really love taking a blanket and going to the park or the beach and reading for a couple of hours.

7) Do you remember the first book that you read?

I think it was a school book - to learn my letters in Cyrillic.

8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?

Paperback.

9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on?

Founding Father by Richard Brookhiser. I think I'm on page 90-something.

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.

I write in almost all of the collections of poetry that I have (except the e.e. cummings second edition).

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?

Sometimes. I occasionally judge a book by its cover :(

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?

Never!

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?

I try to never watch a movie before reading the book!

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?

Pride and Prejudice. Brave New World. Sense and Sensibility.

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)

I knocked a stack of books that was on the floor because I was walking and reading. I've nearly hit a couple of people while doing that too. I probably shouldn't do that, should I?

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?

If I don't like a book, I try and find someone who will. But if I DO like a book, it goes on my shelf by category. I have a system.

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?

Not really.

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))

Goodreads is all I have!!! Well, and my blog.

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?
I keep a blog. Though I also keep a written journal. That's mostly for ideas about writing - for short stories, lines of poetry, etc.

God, this makes me sound incredibly nerdy, doesn't it?

I love Manson! Have you listened to any of the music that he has put out while in jail? It is clear to see that the man never could have been as popular as the Beatles!

message 53: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) The music was soooo creepy! Or maybe that was because of what he did....I don't know....

Selena (selenacurrently) Kathy wrote: "The music was soooo creepy! Or maybe that was because of what he did....I don't know...."

I thought the music was just BAD, lol, in that funny way. I think that if it wasn't attached to him, it wouldn't be creepy. I'm glad someone else is fascinated by him though. Makes me feel less weird :)

message 55: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) Me, too, Selena! What books have you read about him?

message 56: by Selena (new)

Selena (selenacurrently) I've read Helter Skelter and a couple of others. I'm hoping to be able to read "Manson in His Own Words" and "Taming the Beast." The second one is written by his prison counselor so I think it will prove to be VERY interesting! I should also note that I'm a psychology major, so it's okay to like weird things like this!

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) 1) The worst reading experience that you have ever had? I once borrowed a book from the library and read it all the way through, despite the fact that I found the entire storyline - plus all the characters - really irritating. I put it back on my bookcase when I was finished and obviously I erased it from my mind because I saw it one day a couple of weeks later and thought 'Oh, I haven't read this one yet!' So I read it, AGAIN. And didn't like it, AGAIN. And it wasn't until the last page that I realised I'd already read it. So I read a really bad book TWICE. Fabulous. The book was Honeymoon by Amy Jenkins if anyone wants to avoid it.

2) The best reading experience you have ever had?
During Easter break this year I went to stay on holiday with my parents and brother in a little flat in the north of Scotland. Crazily, it snowed and was generally quite cold, so we spent most of the time indoors, watchig films and reading books. There is a fantastic little bookshop in Ullapool and I bought The Last Town on Earth by Thomas Mullen. I don't often buy full price books just from reading the backcover, but this time I did, and it was a wonderful book, which made me feel like I was living the same lives as the people in the book. I think I read it nearly in one go. There was one important factor which aided this reading experience and made it 'the best' - I listened to 'Angels Fall First' by Nightwish (their debut album from about 1996, the year I started school :P) continually while reading it. Now several of the songs on that album transport me back to this book. The album is so atmospheric and really fits the book. I would definitely recommend the The Last Town on Earth + Angels Fall First combination. They're just made for each other!

3) Which book has affected or influenced you the most so far?
I don't think that any books have really influenced me, but The Small Woman by Alan Burgess is a very inspiring book and it makes me want to do something great for the world, like Gladys.

4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?
I remember listening to The Owl Service on tape as a child and being very creeped out. I never listened past the first side because I got so scared. I remember another book where there were birds which flew at someone's kitchen windows, and that was creepy too. Can't remember what the book was about other than that, but it was scary. Oh, and another tape which was called something like 'WWII Ghost Stories.' There was one story on the tape which involved a boy going to a bomb shelter where no one in it spoke, and they all sat in the same positions and were kind of glowing blue. And then he found out that everyone in that shelter had died the previous night, so he shared his shelter with ghosts. I'm not sure why I found that so creepy, but I did.

5) What do you use as a bookmark?
A bookmark! I have loads which I have gained over the years, so I might as well put them to good use.

6) When do you usually read? At home, work, while cooking, in the morning, noon, afternoon, before you go to bed...?
I tend to read as soon as I get in from school in order to relax, and then in bed before I go to sleep. I also read in the bath, and on long journeys, in waiting rooms, sometimes during study periods when I have no homework to do. During the holidays and weekends I will read whenever I don't have something else to do.

7) Do you remember the first book that you read?
Nope. I was a bookworm even as a kid, and would take 10 books out from the library all at once. So I have no idea what the first book I read was because I read so many books!

8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?
I tend to prefer paperbacks as they are easier to transport, but I don't mind hardbacks (providing I don't buy them!) - I'll just read them at home.

9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on?
I'm reading a few books at present, but the nearest one is Jo's Boys by Louisa May Alcott. I am on page 213 out of 350.

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.
I probably leave a lot of crumbs in my books, along with the occasional hot chocolate stain or wet finger mark (from reading in the bath). I've started sticking post-its into 'Jo's Boys' as there are some really amusing and quaint lines in it. For my books for History and English class I underline important comments and quotes simply because it avoids writing down loads of quotes, and sticking loads of post-its into books.

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?
A title or cover may attract me to a book, but likely not put me off. Although there is a Malorie Blackman book with a photograph of lots of bees on the front and I would never be able to read it because while holding it I would be thinking about the bees crawling all over my hands. It creeps me out to even think about it!

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?
No! That would spoil it! Sometimes I go to check how many pages there are and accidentally snatch a glance at the last few lines, but I hate that.

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?
I'm not sure if I've ever found out the ending of a book. It would spoil it if I knew, but I'd keep reading anyway.

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?
I've probably read the Casson Family books by Hilary McKay at least five times each (Saffy's Angel; Indigo's Star; Permanent Rose; Caddy Ever After; Forever Rose) - they're such lovely books, and always make me feel happy. They're written in a very interesting style too. I ended up having to buy new copies of the first two books as they started to fall apart. They're kids books and ones which I will definitely read to my kids (when I have kids). I think they should be on every family bookcase!

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)
Not that I can recall. I do have a fear that I'll get so wound up in my book when I'm on the bus/train and forget to get off. Because of this I put my book away the stop before mine on the bus, or when the train tannoy announces that they will soon be arriving at my stop. Just in case :)

message 60: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) 16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?
I'm a member of a book-swapping website - www.readitswapit.co.uk - and of BookMooch, so I get rid of any books which I no longer want (no longer like, or like but don't think I'll read again) via there. I used to pass on a lot of my teen books to a younger friend, and ones which I didn't consider appropriate would be given to a charity shop. I'm planning on giving the books which I can't get rid of via RiSi or BookMooch to charity shops before the summer starts, as I'll be away for most of the summer and then off to Uni when I come back so I don't want lonely books lying around my house when someone else could be enjoying them!

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?
I have to admit that I do this; I think I was encouraged by my Grandma. I also read in the bath a lot, but often old books or library books (they have plastic covers! Protection!) so that if I drop water on them it's not too bad.

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))
I have lots of written and typed lists of books I have read, want to read, etc. I sometimes think that I spend more time writing about books then actually reading them!

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?
I have a notebook in which I list my TBR, library books and books I've read each month. I've also started using my tiny, useless notebooks for making comments about new books I've read. So one tiny, useless page per book, and a couple of comments like "Read while up north" and "Found ending disturbing" and sometimes "Want to invest in" or "Swapped on RiSi" works quite well, when I remember to record stuff!

Beth F | 342 comments 1) The worst reading experience that you have ever had?

Lately? I just finished The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie. That book was tooooo long.

2) The best reading experience you have ever had?

My top book of ’08 was The Secret History by Donna Tartt. I was haunted by that book for weeks after finishing it. Loved it.

3) Which book has affected or influenced you the most so far?

Hm…still thinking about that. If it comes to me, I’ll come back and update—but I wouldn’t advise holding your breath.

4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?

Not that I can think of.

5) What do you use as a bookmark?

Anything that is reasonably flat and made from paper. I gave up on real bookmarks 10 years ago because I kept getting too attached to them and would get upset if one was lost. Pathetic!

6) When do you usually read? At home, work, while cooking, in the morning, noon, afternoon, before you go to bed...?

Always, always during my commute. And then whenever I get the chance on evenings and weekends. My husband can’t stop himself from pestering me if he sees me sitting quietly somewhere with my nose in a book. He’s not a reader and doesn’t understand that someone who is reading book a book doesn’t want to be dragged into a conversation and/or encouraged to put the book down and go do something.

7) Do you remember the first book that you read?

The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss. I also remember feeling so pleased that I finally knew how to read!

8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?

Paperback. They’re usually cheaper and easier to carry around with me.

9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on?

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, I’m on page 116.

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.

Not intentionally. I wrote in text books when I was in school and if I’m eating something messy while reading, I’ll put the book down until I’m done eating.

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?

Number of pages, no. I like short books because they are quick reads and I like feeling like I’m making progress. And I like long books because that means delving deeply into the book and spending a lot of time with the characters. As for the cover, I’m sure it does on a subconscious level. I’ve never really caught myself in the act though.

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?

Almost always. It’s a bad habit.

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?

Nope.

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?

The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. Same for the rest of the Chronicles as well. LWW was the first “chapter book” I read to myself in elementary school. I’ve been smitten with the series ever since and usually make an effort to reread it every few years or so.

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)

No. I’ve missed my stop though and had to stand around and wait for an opposite bound train to take me back to the right station though.

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?

I used to keep all my books and there’s a chance I may go back to that at a later point in my life, but during my 20’s, I’ve been very nomadic and have moved around every 6-12 months and it got to be a huge pain to pack up and move my books every time I got fed up with a crappy apartment, had a roommate get married, had a crazy roommate move her even crazier boyfriend in, etc. Until I become a homeowner, I’ll probably continue to keep only the books I either loved, think I might read again and/or paid full price for (which is almost never).

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?

I like reading in the bath but otherwise I don’t like spending long amounts of time in the bathroom that would make bringing a book in there worthwhile. When I was a teenager I used to bring the book into the bathroom because it was the one place in the house I could go where I could shut the door and not have someone barge in on me. Now it’s just me and my husband and I’ve learned that if he wants to talk to me, not even a closed bathroom door will stop him, not even the lock, because he starts rattling the door handle and asking me to open the door. If I was a different person than I am, that would probably bother me, ha!

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))

I have a spreadsheet that I’ve been maintaining since January 1, 2006. Goodreads has almost made it obsolete but I still keep/use it, probably more out of habit at this point than anything else.

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?

Eh. I have a book blog but I don’t update it regularly so I don’t count it.

Petra X (petra-x) I seem to be answering this one question at a time. So here is the third question (and answer).

3) Which book has affected or influenced you the most so far?

Civilizations: Culture, Ambition and the Transformation of Nature, by Felipe Fernandez-Armesto http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/56...

Its history from the point of view of geography, the inevitability of certain political and cultural events because of the geographic situation of the nation. Its a fantastic book, brilliantly written.

Petra X (petra-x) 4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?
No. But there are books that I have read I am really scared other people take seriously. This includes all the Trudeau books (the man is a scam artist who has been to prison and who has a $2M fine he is appealing) like Natural Cures They Don't Want You to Know about. Also the D'Adamo scientifically-rubbish Blood-type Diet. Anything like The Secret purporting to give away the details of how to get anything you want without having to actually earn or work very hard for it. I am also scared people take seriously conspiracy-theorists like Texe Marrs - the pro-Nazi (old-style and neo) "Christian" minister, professor (George Bush is apparently a secret Jew and determined to destroy the US!) These books I refuse to stock in my shop, but will order for people.

Elena | 45 comments 1) The worst reading experience that you have ever had?
Usually I put down books I don't like, and forget about them (to sometimes try them again later...). I was very disappointed when I got to finish "Elementary particles" By M. Houellebecq.

2) The best reading experience you have ever had?
Whenever I enjoy a book. And I have enjoyed lots.

3) Which book has affected or influenced you the most so far?
I loved the character of Jo in Little Women. I've grown up dreaming of being like her (somehow, I've succeeded!).

4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?
E.A. Poe, some of his tales are very very scary (The Pit and the Pendulum or The Black Cat above all)

5) What do you use as a bookmark?
Anything: real bookmarks, postcards, receipts, bills, paperclip, pencils, once even a sock.

6) When do you usually read? At home, work, while cooking, in the morning, noon, afternoon, before you go to bed...?
I'm usually very busy so I read at home, before going to bed.

7) Do you remember the first book that you read?
It was a children book with animals and their furs where made of some applied fabric, so I liked to touch them.

8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?
It depends. If it's a book I really, really want to have I'll get the hardcover.

9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on?
Extremely Loud &Incredibly Close by J.S. Foer. I'm around page 120 of the Italian edition.

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.
Sometimes...

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?
I tend to prefer very thick books, but I won't say I'll read anything 'big'. Usually I go by genre and author.

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?
Alas, very often, I must admit!

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?
Never. (See the answer below!)

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?
Yes, lots. Most of the books I read, are re-read many times.

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)
No. Apart from the occasional big book falling on my toes from the bookshelf...

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?
I never, never, never give my books away and never will.

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?
Always.

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))
So, if GR doesn't count, I have to say no.

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?
No.

message 70: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 10 comments 1) The worst reading experience that you have ever had? Having to read Huckleberry Finn (in its entirety) on a print out in high school!
2) The best reading experience you have ever had? Reading Robert R. Mcammon's Swan Song. I read the book in high school and I think finishing it was a defining moment for me as a reader (it is 900 + pages). I was absolutely engrossed in the story and carried the book around like it was a part of myself until the very last page.
3) Which book has affected or influenced you the most so far?Wally Lamb's I Know This Much is True was one of the most affecting books I've ever read. The story was powerful and his writing style is flawless.
4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?When I was little I loved to read books by R.L. Stine. They always guaranteed me a good "freak out."
5) What do you use as a bookmark? Just your average paper bookmark. Sometimes a photo or a post-it if there is nothing else handy.
6) When do you usually read? At home, work, while cooking, in the morning, noon, afternoon, before you go to bed...? On Saturdays curled up on the couch and every night before bed.
7) Do you remember the first book that you read? Wow...no. I do know that when I became a full blown bookworm I was really into R.L. Stine and Sweet Valley though.
8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover? Paperback, hands down.
9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on? I am reading and in love with The Book Thief. I'm on page 320.
10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc. I'm kind of anal about my books and go out of my way not to mark them up. So much so that when reading a reference book I'd sooner clog it up with note scrawled post-its than highlight or write it.
11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book? Not really. Although I do tend to go for shorter, lighter books in the the summer months.
12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending? Absolutely not!
13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not? Yes. I am really hesitant to read a book after I've already seen the movie. Which is why I've been putting off the Harry Potter series for so long...
14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times? As much as I love to read, I'm not really a "read again" type of person.
15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...) Interesting question, but no.
16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them? I either keep them, give them away or take them to book sales at the library.
17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom? Yes...
18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;)) Aside from good reads, no.
19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal? No, but that's a neat idea!

I loved the Life of Pi, but when I got to the end and realized it was all his way of making his mind (and heart) deal with it... I was so, so upset!

2) The best reading experience you have ever had?
The entire Harry Potter series. I have shared it with each of my children as they have come to the age to enjoy it, and now we all wait on pins and needles for the next movie installment.

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)
Ummmm. yes. I used to drive with a paperback book propped on my steering wheel. The theory was red lights only... but...

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?
Ones I love, will read again, are classics, want my kids to enjoy, I keep. Anything else I take in a basket every month to the thrift store down the street.

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?
Yes!

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))

message 78: by KHoopMan (new)

KHoopMan (eliza_morgan) | 151 comments 1) The worst reading experience that you have ever had?
There's something cruel about making a 16 year old read The Sun Also Rises. That felt like torture.

2) The best reading experience you have ever had?
I will pick a very recent experience. This past January, I picked up Middlesex at my mother's recommendation. I have been so busy the past few years that I stopped reading for enjoyment. That book made me fall in love with reading again, and I haven't stopped since.

3) Which book has affected or influenced you the most so far?
When I read Passage by Connie Willis, I changed the way I look at mortality.

4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?
Poisonwood Bible makes me afraid of religious zealots.

5) What do you use as a bookmark?
My parents gave me a birthday card that had a little bookmark attached. I love it!

6) When do you usually read? At home, work, while cooking, in the morning, noon, afternoon, before you go to bed...?
I'm just so tired when I get home from work. I like to read on the weekends, in a coffee shop or in a comfy chair in my pajamas.

7) Do you remember the first book that you read?
I remember begging my mom to take me to the library. I was obsessed with the Babysitter's Club. Ahh, those girls could run a business.

8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?
I'm weird about this. I like paperback, but not small paperbacks. I love those bigger, wider paperbacks.

9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on?
I just finished a book, so I am on page 1 of A Prayer for Owen Meany.

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.
Never! I used to underline/highlight my textbooks, but never never never my novels.

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?
I hate books that have a "movie poster" as the cover. I also don't like books that are too short- I like to get lost in a book and 100 pages won't cut it.

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?
Scandal! I would never!!

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?
No. I knew how the Other Boleyn Girl was going to end for Anne, but it was still a great read.

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?
No, I dont think so.

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)
No, that's crazy!

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?
I keep all of my books and freak out if someone takes one without permission.

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?
Yes. Funny story- I remember being a kid and starting a book in the bathroom. I finished the whole book and bragged to my mother, "I finished a whole book in the bathroom!" And she says, "well jeez Liza, you were in there for an hour and a half."

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))
I used to have a "must read" list of classic books that I shamefully have never read. I don't know where it is now.

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?
That will have to wait until I retire. Only 38 short years away...

Mark | 10 comments Questions
1) The worst reading experience that you have ever had?

I think it may have been in 9th grade when we were forced to read The Stone Angel by Margaret Laurence. I was 15 year old boy at the time and the thoughts of a dying old women were something I could not relate to at all. Over time, however, I have come to appreciate the book in ways I could never have imagined.
2) The best reading experience you have ever had?

I think I could make a case for the first time I read a Stephen King novel. "It" blew me away and I was thrilled to have a long list of books in front of me.
3) Which book has affected or influenced you the most so far?

Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath." I was 12 when I read this and it has deeply influenced the way I see the world and the nature of work in western society.

4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?

The Shining was pretty scary...

5) What do you use as a bookmark?

For years I have struggled with losing bookmarks, using tiny slips of paper etc. Now I dog ear the page. I am a hypocrite of the worst order. I give people who borrow my books only one admonition: do not turn down the edges of the pages! I will have to engage in some serious reflection on this glaring double standard!
6) When do you usually read? All day, all the time - morning, noon, night.

7) Do you remember the first book that you read?

The first adult book I read was James Mitchner's The Covenant. I can still recall the opening scene some 25 years later. As for kids books, beyond How the Grinch Stole Xmas, I don't really recall very clearly.
8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?

Trade paper back is my favourite.

9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on?

I am on page 24 of "Mr. Timothy."
10) For school work I always write in my books - all over them. I don't tend to write in the margins of novels.

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?

I have to say that sometimes I can be put off by a particularly bad cover, but I can often overcome!

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?

No Way!

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?

Yes. I often wont bother to read a book if I have seen the movie. But, this is not a hard and fast rule.

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?

Romeo and Juliet.

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)

Not that I am aware of. (Perhaps I didn't notice the wreckage in my wake!)

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?

I am a pack rat with books. I cannot bear the thought of losing a single one. Except those few that really, truly, sucked.

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?

Heh. I always have a "bathroom" book on the go. Something that I can read a page or two at a time. I am currently reading Michael Palin's Diary. Slowly.

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))

I keep a notebook of titles to investigate. I work part time in a bookstore, so it fills up fast.

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?

No.

9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on? I am currently reading five books so I'll just choose one, Darksong by Isobelle Carmody page 425
10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc. I never deliberately leave a mark but if I just can't put the book down and read while eating I may later find an unseemly stain on the page.
11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book? Yes, not so much the title but the amount of pages and the front cover does.
12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending? If I'm not going to finish a book (which rarely happens) but I still want to know the ending then yes.
13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not? Yes, that's why I always try to read the book first, before the movie. I hate it when I accidentally come upon spoilers for a book I wanted to read.
14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times? Yes, quite a few in fact.
15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...) My bookshelf fell on me once and I burnt my hand by resting it on a stove I didn't know was on because I was reading.
16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them? If I own a book that I do not like, I will donate it to the library or give it to a second-hand bookshop or charity.
17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom? No
18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;)) I have multiple lists sprawled across my bedroom floor, some detailing the books I NEED to read or MUST buy. Quite a few are dusty and almost illegible from old age.
19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal? Um, Goodreads? Other than that, no. Why have two lists when you can have one.

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?
Just Goodreads.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Questions
1) The worst reading experience that you have ever had?
- Definitely while reading "Beloved". I loathed EVERY MINUTE of that book. Oh, I wanted to like it, but it was just impossible for me. Magical Realism? What? Just tell the damn story.

2) The best reading experience you have ever had?
- Oh there have been lots of those. Most recently, I'd have to say reading "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman. I love books that leave you with stuff to ponder, and I love books that don't give up their secrets too easily. If you have an "Oh! THAT'S what that meant!" moment, that's a good book.

3) Which book has affected or influenced you the most so far?
- Hmm... That's a tough one. Again, most recently, I'd have to say "Death Be Not Proud". I was really affected by this book, and I think that it will shape my interactions with my children (when I have them) and make me appreciate them all the more.

4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?
- The only book that has ever scared me enough to make me put it down was "The Taking" by Dean Koontz. There was this one part with a doll... in the dark... *shudder*

5) What do you use as a bookmark?
- A small business card for a local photographer, which has a photo of white lillies on it. Or whatever is close by.

6) When do you usually read? At home, work, while cooking, in the morning, noon, afternoon, before you go to bed...?
- Whenever I'm awake, if I can. I'm a complete bibliophile. I will put off the world in favor of a good book. Cooking, cleaning, work, life etc can all wait when I'm reading.

7) Do you remember the first book that you read?
- No. I believe it was a Seuss book, but I'm not sure. I learned to read early and remember reading the newspaper at 4, but I can't remember what my first book was.

8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?
- Paperback. Hardcovers are too bulky and expensive.

9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on? I'm currenly on disk 8 of "Labyrinth", which I'm listening to in the car, and I will be starting "The Princess Bride" as soon as I am out of work.

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.
- NO! That's blasphemy! I do read while eating quite often, but I am super careful not to spill anything in the book. I have a lot of used books which have marks in them, and I hate how people don't care for books like they should.

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?
- Yes. If a book seems to be too short, I won't buy it unless I've heard recommendations that it's good. I love long books, since you really get to know the characters, etc. Book covers are definitely a factor as well.

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?
- No. I love the suspense. I hate spoilers.

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?
- Yes, but not often. I'll read almost anything.

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?
- Yes. "The Stand" and "The Shining" and "Little Women" and the Harry Potter series, and the "Lord of the Rings"

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)
- No, nothing like that. Although I have tripped quite a few times while reading and walking at the same time.

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?
- I get rid of books that I will not read repeatedly. If I love a book, I keep it.

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?
- Yes. I am a total toilet reader. I've been known to request reading material if I find myself without, although we keep a stack of magazines in the bathroom for this purpose.

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))
- Not yet, but maybe in the future. For now, I just use GR.

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?
- No. I'm not much for diaries.

-anytime i get to spend long uninterrupted periods of time with a good book

7) Do you remember the first book that you read?

8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?
- of course, there are so many books to choose from titles, cover and amt of pages of very important in narrowing down the choices. Also for years my friend pestered me to read Power of One and Pillars of the Earth but something about their titles and the way they look made me put it off for years until she practically forced me to read them, they are now 2 of my favorite books

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?
- I used to always read the last page first but then it ruined a whole book once so I stopped

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)
- I've tried reading while cooking and burnt several things but never really anything serious

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?
I usually give away my favorite books...I have some books that I have bought 4 or 5 times but just keep giving away...this means that my bookshelves have a lot of books I hated.

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?
-yup, I aways keep a book in the bathroom. I also read in the bathroom when I know I need to be out of bed getting in a shower but can't bring myself to do it just yet.

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))
- not really, I write down alot of books on scraps of paper but they usually get lost. I also keep a wish list at Powells.com

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?
- I started one last year and it was the best thing ever. It provides a certain closure when I finish a book, also keeps me from accidentally reading the same book twice.

message 84: by Kate (new)

Kate | 119 comments 1) The worst reading experience that you have ever had?
I dislike Amateurish writing. I tried to read one book recently that I can't even remember what the book or authors name was. The style of writing was so incredibly underdeveloped and basic that it was laughable. I was surprised to see that he actually had a series going...

2) The best reading experience you have ever had?
As I've mentioned already, Looking for Alibrandi was a stand out during my teen years, and I still pick it up today. I also loved Red Dragon and silence of the Lambs.

3) Which book has affected or influenced you the most so far? Probably Looking for Alibrandi as its one of the few that I've read over and over again.

4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?
I used to love ghost stories as a child, but I was easily scared by them, no matter how zany they were. I remember a Vampire book my school library had that was written as 'real' accounts. I used to love reading it in the day, couldn't sleep because of it at night.

5) What do you use as a bookmark?
Currently, a nice one that my friend bought me from Fiji. Otherwise its anything within reach. Have been known to use money notes if they're there.

6) When do you usually read? At home, work, while cooking, in the morning, noon, afternoon, before you go to bed...?
Mostly at night in bed, but have been more and more during the day at home.

7) Do you remember the first book that you read?
Not really, Mum and I used to read alot together from a very early age, to the point where I'd correct people if they left simple words out. It would have either been fairy tales or Enid Blyton books more than likely.

8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?
Whichever is the cheapest available at the time

9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on? Page 81 of 1984 by George Orwell

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.
I wouldn't write in them, but occasionally food stains may sadly find their way in there though I do try not to.

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?
Sometimes yes

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?
I try not to, but if it should have an exciting ending sometimes temptation gets the better of me, especially if I'm in the middle of slow sections.

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?
Not really, If I want to read something, I'll read it. Book versions normally turn out to be much better than the movie and worth the read regardless.

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?
Yes, looking for alibrandi and several others.

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)
My Bookshelf also poses as my bedrooms ornament display, so trying to dig out books while trying to avoid jewellery boxes and vases etc can be a challenge

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?
I tend to keep them. Mostly because I'm possessive and too lazy to bother selling them.

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?
Not the bathroom no, Toilet yes.

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))
I've started writing what I want to read and what I want to buy down just recently.

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal? Apart from Goodreads and the above book, no...

message 85: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments Questions
1) The worst reading experience that you have ever had?
For me it was reading Bless the Beast and the Children during my freshman year of high school. I never really minded the assigned reading and loved some of them (Don Quixote, Oedipus Rex), and although I did read it, I hated every minute of it.

2) The best reading experience you have ever had?
I had the tremendous luck and pleasure to have read some great books last year. And a lot of them have become favorites: The Thirteenth Tale, The House at Riverton, The Book of Lost Things, and so many more.

3) Which book has affected or influenced you the most so far?
I have to say the Harry Potter series. Although, I loved reading before the HP books came out, my interest would wane sometimes where I wouldn't read anything for months. I read the first HP book as a freshman in high school (about 2 years after the movie came out) and picked up the ones that were already published shortly after that. Ever since then, my interest in reading hasn't waned one bit.

4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?
There were a couple of books that I picked up that creeped me out a bit. The Body of Christopher Creed, Come Closer (I have always had the fear that I'm going to get possessed; I don't know why since I'm not particularly religious. I blame my parents for letting me watch The Exorcist when I was too young to be watching it), Promise Not to Tell (the Potato Girl terrified me), and Life As We Knew It (because that can actually happen).

3) What do you use as a bookmark?
I have a metal fairy bookmark that quotes Socrates: Wisdom begins in wonder.

6) When do you usually read? At home, work, while cooking, in the morning, noon, afternoon, before you go to bed...?
I usually read about an hour before work, during my 15 minute break at work, and for about 2 or 3 hours after I come out of work. If it's my day off, then I tend to read all day in two hour intervals.

7) Do you remember the first book that you read?
I have no clue.

8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?
Since I walk to work and I always take a book with me, I prefer trade paperbacks. Although, if it's a series that I am collecting, then I prefer hardcovers.

9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on?
Little Red Riding Hood Uncloaked: Sex, Morality, and the Evolution of a Fairy Tale; pg. 8

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.
I don't like to write in my books. I prefer it if my books were in near to perfect condition. I also don't eat when I'm reading since I'm clumsy and would most likely spill something on it.

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?
If I'm buying a book, then no, none of those things really bother me (although I don't really like to buy books that have the movie cover on it, but if it can't be helped, than what can you do?). If it's my on my own bookshelf, and I want something new to read, then the page number does factor in. Particularly if I'm in the mood for a quick read.

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?
God, no! I do sometimes flip through the last pages of a book to see the number of pages it has and will have a phrase pop out at me. As luck will have it, most of those phrases tend to be critical. Like once when I was checking the number of pages in a legal thriller book and the phrase that popped out was "Not Guilty!". "Pissed" doesn't even begin to describe how I was feeling at that moment.

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?
Not really. I do get kind of upset if I'm reading a review and some inconsiderate person didn't put "spoiler alert" in the title, but I don't get angry enough to not read the book (I do however get angry enough to curse that person in every language I know; there are only two, so it doesn't take very long, but it's effective nonetheless). As for watching movies first, if I let that affect me, I would have never picked up some great reads like Harry Potter, The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants, A Time to Kill, etc.

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?
The Harry Potter series and The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants series.

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)
Not really. Now if you were to ask about any accidents while listening to music, that would be like ten pages long.

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?
If I didn't like a book or if I liked it enough, but feel like I would never reread it, then I swap it on paperbackswap.com

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?
No, but maybe I should start. It's lost reading time.

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;)
I keep a list of books I've read on the computer. Nothing as elaborate as a spreadsheet. Just a list of books and the author. I also keep a list of books to read/buy on the computer.

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?
Besides what I wrote above, just Good Reads.

message 86: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Alisha, I know EXACTLY what you mean about checking the number of pages and having something jump out at you... I have had that happen to me so many times that my eyes have trained themselves to "not see" what they shouldn't see. Comes in handy with updates and reviews on GR too, I might add! :)

Lori Walker Questions
1) The worst reading experience that you have ever had?

I think that would have to be Heart of Darkness. Or maybe Fried Green Tomatoes. They were both pretty bad and I kept checking to see how many pages I had left.

2) The best reading experience you have ever had?

I'm going to have to say...either Gone With the Wind, To Kill a Mockingbird (the first time I really "got" the book [not the first time I read it:], I cried, which was my best time reading it), or The Divine Secrets of the Ya-ya Sisterhood.

3) Which book has affected or influenced you the most so far?

I hate that I keep repeating the same title...but I think Gone With the Wind because I adore Scarlett (and ignore her lesser qualities or somehow turn them into virtues).

4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?

The first time I read Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, I finished and it was really late at night and it scared the jeepers out of me. I think I started the next book just so I could think about something else.

5) What do you use as a bookmark?

Pretty much any piece of paper or bookmark shaped item (bandaids, for example).

6) When do you usually read? At home, work, while cooking, in the morning, noon, afternoon, before you go to bed...?

I get my best reading done at home when it's quiet, either in bed or sitting in the blue chair at my parents' house. But I read when I'm waiting for someone, when I'm waiting for class to start, basically when I'm sitting still for a while and I'm not in a car.

7) Do you remember the first book that you read?

No. But I remember hearing my mom repeat the story of me reading my first book. The punchline, for all who are interested, is that I walked up to my teacher and told her with a great tremor in my voice that "I can read!" That might be the best day of my life and I don't even remember it...

8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?

Paperback. But not the mass market ones because they hurt my hands and I can't find a comfortable way of holding them.

9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on?

Journals by Arthur Schlesinger--124
Lolita--45
Edgar Sawtelle--47

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.

I always want to write in my books. Sometimes I do. But I guess most of my marks are not deliberate water stains from accidentally either splashing on them or setting them down on a semi-wet surface.

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?

If I'm at the bookstore browsing (as in not with a mission) I'll pick up books based on their covers and then read the back to determine whether I want it. If we're talking about deciding which of my books to read next, I pick up ones that interest me and spend a bit of time aimlessly picking up stuff, reading a few pages, and changing my mind.

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?

I've done it before if I'm not interested in the book and need something to encourage me.

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?

I try to read the book before seeing the movie. But having seen Kate Winslet win the Oscar made me want to read The Reader. It's definitely tipped the scales, but I wouldn't say it's made me change my mind about a book I've decided against.

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?

Gone With the Wind, To Kill a Mockingbird, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. And many books from when I was a kid.

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)

Can't say that I have. I generally don't read and walk for that reason.

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?

If I don't like them, I generally get rid of them. I'm working on getting through my books that I own so I can lighten the load because it's hard moving around so often with so many books. But the ones I've really liked, I'll never give away.

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?

Only if I'm really into the book because it's difficult to do the things I need to do with a book in both hands.

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))

I make mention of this stuff on my blog.

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?

Not specifically for reading. I mention and keep track of the books I've read on my blog, but mainly because I want to think my readers are interested in that.

I am reading Memoirs of a Geisha. I’m on page 53.

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.

Usually, on accident, I spill something in it, whether it is food or drink.

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?

Yes. Even though the saying goes, don’t judge a book by it’s cover, usually, it has to look interesting to me for me to pick it up. Especially if I’m shopping, and I don’t really have anything in mind.

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?

Never!

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?

No, because usually, I avoid finding out the ending of a book at all costs.

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?

I don’t believe so, but I’m not sure.

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)

Nope.

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?

I give them away if I don’t like them, or figure I won’t read them again

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?

Sometimes I do. I usually don't, however, because if I do, I don't want to get up and stop reading. So that equals alot of time in the bathroom.

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))

No, but now I might.

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?

I do, but I have to be in a writing mood to do it.

message 90: by Miranda (new)

Miranda (miranda0989) 1) The worst reading experience that you have ever had?
At the tender and impressionable age of nine I borrowed a book of very scary stories from the library and stealthily read it under the covers at night because I knew my mum wouldn’t approve of it. I did not sleep properly for months afterwards.

2) The best reading experience you have ever had?
I can vividly remember the first time I found a book so absorbing that I lost all consciousness of my surroundings and actually felt like I was *there*. I was about ten or eleven; the book was ‘A Voice in the Wind’ by Francine Rivers.

3) Which book has affected or influenced you the most so far?
Hm, good question. I’d have to think about that for a while… and since I’m just doing this to procrastinate instead of writing an essay, I’d better not.

4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?
See above - since that time I’ve mainly tended to avoid books that look too scary. I did read my sister’s copy of “Carrie” by Stephen King a few years after that but oddly enough did not find it at all frightening. I was much more affected by the way Carrie was treated by the other girls in the class and the social dynamics than any of the scenes at the end with the pig’s blood and the fire etc.

5) What do you use as a bookmark?
I fold corners. Unashamedly.

6) When do you usually read? At home, work, while cooking, in the morning, noon, afternoon, before you go to bed...?
Mostly at home in the evenings – there’s nothing like curling up on the couch after tea with a cup of tea and a nice thick book.

7) Do you remember the first book that you read?
Yes, it was one of those “See Jane Run” readers if memory serves…

8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?
I don’t mind as long as they fall open easily. There’s nothing worse than having to do battle with a book to read the words closest to the spine.

9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on?
‘Beanpole’ by Barbara Park – pg 119

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.
If a book belongs to me I occasionally will write in it, especially if there’s a phrase in another language that I’ve gone to the bother of looking up a translation for – I know I won’t remember it next time I read the book, so I jot it in the margin. I fold corners, highlight things in text books (again, only if they’re mine!), and I have been known to drop books in baths and get beetroot juice on them, amongst other crimes. But at least I’m not one of those awful people that write in library books! My library’s readership seems to consist solely of wannabe editors who obsessively circle/underline every single tiny mistake that I would never have noticed otherwise.

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?
Yes. Contrary to popular belief, I think you can tell a lot about a book by its cover. There are exceptions of course, but in general...

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?
Only if a book is simultaneously boring enough that I can’t be bothered reading all the way to the end, yet interesting enough that I DO want to know what happens.

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?
No. But I’m not one of those anti-spoiler people. I don’t actively seek out the ending before I read book, but on the other hand I don’t feel that the experience of reading it has been RUINED if I already know how it ends.

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?
Many - I love re-reading books, it’s comforting. No surprises.

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)
I’ve missed my bus stop a few times, but other than that, near misses only. For a vague/dreamy type person I have uncannily good reflexes; I always catch things before they land on my head.

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?
If a book is already in my possession I will only sell it if I really, heartily dislike it and don’t want it on my shelves. Since I only buy books if I love them or have good reason to believe I WILL love them, this doesn’t happen very often.

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?
Yes – I think all toilets should be fitted with bookshelves and always take a book if I’m going to be a while. My husband considers this a revolting habit and refuses to touch books that have been ‘defiled’ by toilet reading, even though I’ve explained to him countless times that I do not handle the books with unwashed hands.

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))
No, only goodreads. I do have a list on my computer of “books to hunt down and kill”, ie find and buy. Mostly obscure/out of print titles that I still can’t get hold of, even with the help of the internet.

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?
Nope. Before goodreads I always wished I had some way of keeping track, but none of my systems ever worked.

message 92: by Tara (new)

Tara 1) The worst reading experience that you have ever had?
Although I love his fictional work, reading Chinua Achebe's book of essays, Hopes and Impediments, was painful for me. Ugh. Sorry Chinua.
2) The best reading experience you have ever had?
For some reason, when I was reading The Awakening it was just such a great feeling. I was totally wrapped up in the atmosphere of the book and it just absorbed me. Also, I was reading The Kite Runner outside on the grass on a summer night and it just barely started drizzling and it just matched the somber mood of the book. Magic.
3) Which book has affected or influenced you the most so far?
Anna Karenina, especially the last 1/4 or so. Tolstoy is not only an amazing writer, but an incredibly insightful philosopher in my opinion.
4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?
There was a Goosebumps book I read in 3rd grade about a giant purple blob that sweated green snails that freaked me out. I do get scared by books still though.
5) What do you use as a bookmark?
A free bookmark I got from my university's poster sale with pictures of famous artwork, or postcards I have lying around.
6) When do you usually read? At home, work, while cooking, in the morning, noon, afternoon, before you go to bed...?
At work (oops!) or when I've got some time between classes.
7) Do you remember the first book that you read?
Vaguely. It had something to do with water/a bathtub/a rubber duck (come on, I was like, 3).
8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?
Paperback.
9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on?
Multiple textbooks and the Old Testament. One of the textbooks is an anthology of Science Fiction short stories, and I'm on page 840.
10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.
Nope. I'm one of those OCD people who wants to keep books pristine. Although I did drop Anna Karenina in the ocean :(
11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?
I'm more swayed by reviews and recommendations, but if the cover is embarrassing (pink, fluffy chick lit), I tend to not read those in public. Although my copy of The Age of Innocence slightly resembled a trashy romance. It was a little awkward.
12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?
Never on purpose.
13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?
No, I'll usually read it regardless, but sometimes seeing a movie in general will make me read the book (i.e. Everything is Illuminated)
14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?
Yes! The first Harry Potter for sure (possibly some of the others too) and The Giver come to mind.
15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)
Often. I'm super clumsy so I run into things and/or people while reading all the time. And I drop books on my toes all the time too.
16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?
I mostly keep them, but I'll loan them out, especially if I like them.
17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?
I think everyone does at least some of the time... and I read in the tub too on those rare occasions I have time for a bath instead of a shower.
18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;)) No, which is why I love GoodReads!
19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal? Not specifically, just a regular journal which sometimes crosses over.

message 93: by Leanna (new)

Leanna (leannerd) | 73 comments 1) The worst reading experience that you have ever had?
The Twilight Saga

2) The best reading experience you have ever had?
I really enjoy being able to read a series straight through. A few months ago I read all the Harry Potter books straight through and I'm currently reading A Series of Unfortunate Events.

3) Which book has affected or influenced you the most so far?
I don't think any one specific book has influenced me. Reading in general has made me want to become an English Lit teacher and made me want to write.

4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?
When I was younger, I tried reading The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty and it really freaked me out, as did the movie. I could probably read it now and be okay, but it really scared me when I was, like, 11.

5) What do you use as a bookmark?
Usually I steal bookmarks from the library or use whatever pieces of paper I happen to find. I have recently decided to start collecting bookmarks and I just bought a few today. The one I'm using right now is a really nifty Slytherin House Banner. :D

6) When do you usually read? At home, work, while cooking, in the morning, noon, afternoon, before you go to bed...?
All of the above, lol. Usually I read at night, on my breaks at work, and in between my classes while I'm at school. I also am known to read during commercials when I'm watching TV and in the car (while in the passenger's seat, of course).

7) Do you remember the first book that you read?
Oh, gosh, no. I'm sure it was Dr. Seuss something-or-other. I've been reading since I was about 3.

8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?
Paperback. They're cheaper and easier to cram together. However, if I'm collecting a series and have one in hardback, I have to have them all in hardback. I'm picky that way. :D

9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on?
I'm currently reading A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book the Thirteenth: The End by Lemony Snicket. I'm on page 93.

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.
God, no! Writing or marking in books makes me feel dirty. I try to be really careful when eating or drinking while reading my books--I'm so picky about them.

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?
The title and the cover photo/artwork is usually the first thing that attracts me to a book, especially when I'm just browsing in the bookstore, but I always read the back of the book to make sure it's something I want to spend my money on.

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?
I try really hard not to. Sometimes it just happens, though...I have a habit of wanting to read the last sentence first. :D

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?
Not usually, because the books are always, always, always soo much better than the movies, so if I liked the movie, I'm usually pretty sure I'll love the book.

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?
Definitely. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, ftw!

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)
No. Books are my friends. They would never hurt me. :D

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?
I keep most everything. If it's something I've grown out of already, I'll probably give it to one of my nieces or nephews, but I like keeping my books, even if they are taking over my room.

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?
Sometimes I take a book with me when I take a bubble bath. :D

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))
I have a book list of books that I want to read. It's massive and I'm only about halfway done writing it. I also have a list of books that I want to read in my lifetime that didn't make it into my comprehensive list, like 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die, Time Magazine's 100 Best Novels Since 1923, and various other lists I've found.

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?
No, but I have a list. And I recently started a blog where I'm going to write book reviews.

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? Sometimes but not often.

I almost did not read Skinny Dip by Carl Hiaasson because of the cover page which seemed like a cheap movie poster. But it was a wonderful fun fun read.

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?
Sometimes...

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)
No. Not that I can recall...:-)

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?
I lend them to my family and friends hoping to get them back but usually I don't...even though I always put a little tag in them saying they are mine.

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?
No I'm not a bathroom reader

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))
I started one once...I think I'll just copy my list from good reads every year...

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?
Good idea!

message 96: by Liz (new)

Liz (arcanepenguin) | 285 comments 1) The worst reading experience that you have ever had? Every single book I read in my 11th grade advanced english class. The teacher pretty much succeeded in ruing every single book we read. Even for books I previously enjoyed such as Huck Finn.

2) The best reading experience you have ever had?
I don't know - all of them?

3) Which book has affected or influenced you the
most so far?

I can't really think of anything specific. I remember a one friend getting me into the L.J. Smith books at about 13-14 and another getting me into the Laurell K. Hamilton Books at 14, and I still read a lot of urban fantasy and paranormal romance today so those two recommendations really influenced my future reading.

4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?
I don't remember the title, but the Goosebumps book with the kid who got trapped in the mirror really freaked me out when I was a kid.

5) What do you use as a bookmark?
Anything I get my hands on. I use holdslips from the library, folded post-its, receipts from the books, randoms that I find in used books, when reading non-fiction or books for work I'll use an index card so I can write down vocab, or some notes.

6) When do you usually read?
At home, work, while cooking, in the morning, noon, afternoon, before you go to bed...? I usually read for a little bit in the afternoon when I get home from work and then for a little bit before I go to bed.

7) Do you remember the first book that you read?
The first real "chapter book" I read was the first Boxcar Children Book. I got it from a scholastic book club order from school. My mom said she ordered it because I wanted it rather than because she thought I could read it. When I got the book I sat down and didn't get up until I had finished the book.

8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?
Depends. I like hardcovers for books I'm going to keep and read over and over because they are more durable and I like paperbacks because they are cheap and portable.

9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on?
I'm currently reading The Things They Carried and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I have no idea what pages I'm on and don't have the books with me.

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.
Rarely

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?
Typically not, I usually read what I whatever strikes me at the moment. I might choose a shorter book when I know I'll be getting my hands on something highly desirable in the next few days.

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?
never

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?
I usually try to read books before I go see the movie.

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?
Too many of those to count. I love reading old favorites.

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)
I have been mauled by many a stack of books. Books I own have attacked me many times and I used to work in one of the glorious used bookstores with hazardous stacks all around.

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?
I always intend to keep them all, but I've moved more than 10 times in the past 7 years. I also will be moving 2 times this summer and there are always casualties.

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?
Sometimes, not all the time.

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))
All of the above. I track all the books I've read in excel spread sheets. I have a list of authors I read so I can check upcoming releases. I have lists of series I read/collect so I don't get doubles. I also have a complete to-buy list. I'm trying to get a list of books I own, but it's going to be a long process.

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?
no

Someoneyouknow | 646 comments 1) The worst reading experience that you have ever had?

I think it was in summer 2006 or 2005 when I read War and Peace.

2) The best reading experience you have ever had?

Those times when I read Gone With the Wind and Prep for the second time. I love re-reading my favourite books, this way I pay much more attention to the details, analyze more deeply the characters' experiences etc.

3) Which book has affected or influenced you the most so far?

I think the book that affected my reading habits most was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Before that I wasn't keen on reading and couldn't even imagine reading more than 50 pages a day.

4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?

I don't read any remotely scary books nowadays, but when I was 12, I read many teen horror stories by R.L. Stine and a couple of them managed to scare me.

5) What do you use as a bookmark?

I don't use bookmarks.

6) When do you usually read? At home, work, while cooking, in the morning, noon, afternoon, before you go to bed...?

I usually read in the subway in the afternoon (en route to my college) and evening (returning from college), on weekends I read at any part of day if I don't go out anywhere.

7) Do you remember the first book that you read?

Nah, I have very few recollections of my early childhood.

8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?

I'd say paperback, even though the cover can get damaged easily, but it's less expensive than hardcover.

9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on?

I'm reading Wuthering Heights. I'm on page 65.

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.

No, I never underline anything in the books I read and don't drink/eat anything while reading.

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?

Not really. I'm only interested in the contents of the book, I don't care if the book is short or long as long as it's interesting. Title and cover can be very deceiving. The title only matters if it's a very famous book, then I read a bit of the book to decide if it's worthwhile.

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?

Only if I'm comparing the book and the movie ending.

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?

Yes, it made me skim through Atonement and The Hours

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?

No, but I think it's only a matter of time.

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf...)

No serious accidents, just missing my subway stop a couple of times.

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?

Never sold/given away a single book that I own, even the ones I dislike/lost interest in.

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?

I never read in the bathroom!

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;))

I had a short list of books to buy before I discovered GR and I have updated it since then.

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?

No.

Chipchick Questions

1) The worst reading experience that you have ever had?

Well, it is more of an experience of not reading. When I was 6, I cut open my eyeball and after visiting the local ER, they sent me to the "big" town an hour away where the surgeon was. I vividly remember taking my current read, a Nancy Drew book, but I don't remember which one, with me in the car, but Mom wouldn't let me read. I didn't really understand the seriousness of my injury because it didn't hurt and just wanted to read.

2) The best reading experience you have ever had?

When I am down - which is a lot lately - reading takes me somewhere else and I can become someone else.

3) Which book has affected or influenced you the most so far?

The Bible

4) Have you ever read a book that you got really scared of?

In Jr High, I was reading Edgar Allan Poe really late one night (after my parents went to bed I would often get up and read…I am, and always have been, a night owl) and it scared me silly.

As an adult, Jurassic Park; my husband and I were visiting his Grandmother and were in the middle of nowhere Georgia, in an old house that was making creaking sounds. I was on the side of the bed by the window and during one of the more suspenseful scenes, I woke my husband up to change places with me so I wasn't by the window.

5) What do you use as a bookmark?

I have several of the magnetic bookmarks (one of my favorite souvenirs from our vacations) that I sometimes use but about half the time, I just remember the page number.

6) When do you usually read? At home, work, while cooking, in the morning, noon, afternoon, before you go to bed...?

Any time I possibly can. Now that I listen to audiobooks as well, I listen when I'm doing yard work, house work, shopping, driving!

7) Do you remember the first book that you read?

No. But I do remember reading the The Boxcar Children (The Boxcar Children, #1) series, Bobbsey Twins, Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys in early grade school.

8) Which do you prefer - paperback or hardcover?

Whichever. It doesn't really matter to me except when I travel, then I like paperbacks.

9) What are you currently reading? What page are you on?

Four Queens: The Provencal Sisters Who Ruled Europe page 156

The Queen's Gambit page 95

The Silent Sea - audiobook, about 4 hours in.

10) Do you ever leave "a mark" (deliberate and/or not deliberate) in your books? For example, write in them, underline quotes, coffeemarks or food crumbs and etc.

In my college textbooks, I would always put my initials on a page. I was paranoid and didn't put them on the same page overtime, because I was afraid that would be too easy for a thief to figure out, so I came up with a system of finding the item in the index closest to my name and using that page number. It was always different but not random so I could prove it was mine.

Earlier this month, we were in Yellowstone and hiked a ways to a geyser. We had to wait awhile for it to erupt, so I started reading, in the rain. So my book got rather wet. But I don't write in them anymore.

11) Does the title, amount of pages and the cover affect you when you are considering a specific book?

Nope. Well, actually, yes. When I'm in Half Price Books, scanning the clearance shelves for something, but not something specific, the title/cover might attract me to it. Currently, I'm into medieval stuff, so the if the title sounds, or the cover looks medieval, then I'll check it out.

12) Do you ever browse through to the last pages in order find out the ending?

Nope.

13) Have knowing the ending of a book (example, through spoilers or a movie) ever made you decide whether you will read the book or not?

No. I prefer reading the book before watching the movie, and that is almost always the way it happens; I've usually read the book long before there was a movie, but there have been a couple of instances where it was reversed: Harry Potter and Tom Clancy. I watched The Hunt for Red October before I'd heard about Clancy and after the movie, I immediately started reading his books. I had just graduated college and hadn't had much time for pleasure reading at the time, but that summer I got to read them all!

14) Is there a book that you have read more than five times?

I've read the early Harry Potter books more than 5 times because I reread them all before each new one. A Wrinkle in Time, A Swiftly Tilting Planet,The Hobbit: or There and Back Again, that's all I can think of.

15) Have you ever been in an accident where the book was the cause? (for example, almost getting hit by a car when reading while walking, or having stacks of books falling on you from a bookshelf…)

Probably bumped into things as I was reading while walking, but nothing serious.

16) Do you sell/give away your books or do you keep them, even though you don't like one of them?

We keep some of our favorites in our library…you know, the good looking books. But we filled that up years ago. The guest room bookcases are where all the other books (mostly paperback) are and they are crammed full of books. Every so often I have to clean them out to make room for new ones…last summer I gave 100 paperbacks to the local library (a great tax write off!) I've sold some back to Half Price Books, but they usually give me so little money that I feel better just donating them to the library. Plus, that way, I can get a hold of them again if I want to re-read them.

17) Do you bring with you the book when needing to use the toilet? Do you ever read in the bathroom?

Yep, either a book or listen to an audiobook.

18) Do you have some kind of book system, where you write down what you are reading, have bought, will read, will buy and etc? (goodreads doesn't count ;)

I had to start several years ago, trying to keep track of what I'd read, what I wanted to read, and most importantly, which book was next in the series was impossible. I use a database called Librarian Pro. I can also keep up with wether it is a book I own, a library book and which library it is in or an audiobook. I had to split my database…my medieval one has ~650 books in it, ~100 of which I've read. My other database has ~1400 books, about 500 of which I've read. I've added some of the books I've read in the last 10 years or so, but I'm sure that I've left some off. Some of them are series where I've read the first few, added all of them, but the rest are pretty low on the TBR list. So low, that I'll probably never get around to reading them, but...

19) Do you keep a reading diary/journal?

Nope
