Lisa Kay’s Questions for Chapters 8 – 14 8. Oh, dear! Colin is a bit of a pompous asshat, isn’t he?
Yah, I was so disappointed. I hope he isn't like that for the entire book.
9. Was Edouard really confused as to the date of Amy’s arrival? Why offer their mother’s bedroom, and then in the next breath declare she really shouldn’t go into the West Wing? Did he slip, or was he setting her up? Where do his loyalties lie?
I don't trust Edouard at all. He's up to something suspicious and I question his motives for inviting his sister to France. I'm sad that he is an ass too.
10. Well! I wasn’t expecting a (view spoiler)[ injured man! (hide spoiler)] Glad Jane believed Amy about him; she’s a pretty good investigator, isn’t she? Who is he? Where did he go? Was it on his own volition?
I was surprised too. I think it's an English spy that was being tortured by the French.
11. What is your impression of Geoffrey Pinchingdale-Snipe?
He sounds like a cool cucumber. I hope he turns out to be a true friend to Richard. Would be nice if he turned out to have his own book as well. Does he? Don't tell me. I didn't check that. Don't want to give it away.
12. Richard is harboring some self-loathing from his relationship with Deirdre. Comments.
Poor Richard! I wanted to give him a hug. I can see why he's closed himself off a bit. Reminds me of James Bond, Regency Style.
13. Looks like Gaston Delaroche is going to be the “Big Fuc#er” in this story. Do you think I am right? BTW, I had to look up nom de guerre = name of war So Delaroche thinks the Purple Gentian is Scarlet Pimpernel. Suspects: a) Sir Percy Blakeney, b) Beau Brummel, b) George Marston (one of Edouard’s friends – so he is bound to come into contact with Amy. Eek! Think Richard will have to save her from him?), c) Edouard de Balcourt (does he think him a “double agent?” & d) Richard Selwick . Goodness, I need a flowchart, LOL!
I agree with you, lots of names! Going to have to print out that character list soon so I can keep it all straight. In anwer to your question, I think De LaRouche is a nuisance who can cause trouble but I have a sneaking feeling there is someone else that might be worse. Not sure who just yet though.
"Gwen" Meadows, Amy & Jane's spinster chaperone is cracking me up. I would want to meet her in a dark alley. No question here, just an observation.
She is a hoot. This would be a total twist, but what if she was the true Pink Carnation? That would be way awesome.
15. Will Amy make a real friend in Hortense? Will Pauline Leclerc get her eyes scratched out? Will Amy get into trouble tonight, or later in the story?
Hortense seems like a nice lady. I hope her and Amy remain friends, even though Amy is plotting to use that friendship to her advantage. Part of me has a problem with that. I'm surprised Pauline doesn't yet have an STD. Yikes! She is bad news all around. I think Amy is in for loads of trouble but mostly on the romantic side. She's going to distract Richard and then he'll get caught and she will have to use her wits to save him.
@ taita#9 - taita wrote: “I'm sad that he is an ass too.”
Speaking of asses, I’m laughing mine off right now. You’re funny.
#10 – Oh! Really?
#11 – Yeah, nobody tell me either. I want the surprise. Depending on which way this story goes, I might check at the end.
#12 – LOL! Neat.
#13 – Really? Interesting. We’ll see.
#14 – I LOVE it! LOL!
#15 – I take it you don’t like sluts? LOL! Really, though, how did they prevent all that back then if not with abstinence? I know they had “French Letters” – but they were thick, from what I understand. Though, now that I think on it, thickness might help, LOL! Oh, Lord! I’m getting punchy and need sleep.
I just finished chapter 13 and I laughed until I had tears from Miss Gwen Thwapping Bonaparte with her reticule and telling him he was rude and needed to have better posture! :D

Susan's answers toLisa Kay’s Questions for Chapters 8 – 14 8. Oh, dear! Colin is a bit of a pompous asshat, isn’t he?
Boy, isn't he?! What is he hiding, not wanting anyone to see those papers? Maybe he's protecting the "idea" of the Purple Getian as a hero when the Pink Carnation saved him cause he screwed up being in love with Amy. I hope Colin gets better.
9. Was Edouard really confused as to the date of Amy’s arrival? Why offer their mother’s bedroom, and then in the next breath declare she really shouldn’t go into the West Wing? Did he slip, or was he setting her up? Where do his loyalties lie?
I'm sure he didn't forget when she was arriving. And then, he left her to go out! Jerk-face! As for the whole offering their mother's room and then recinding, I'm not sure as to the reasons. I think he's hiding something (other than the injured guy). I just don't know if he's a good guy or a bad guy yet.
10. Well! I wasn’t expecting a (view spoiler) Glad Jane believed Amy about him; she’s a pretty good investigator, isn’t she? Who is he? Where did he go? Was it on his own volition?
I love that Jane follows and believes her. Wouldn't it be something if Jane were the Pink Carnation. She seems to be level headed enough to pick up on the clues that Amy misses due to her bubbliness ;)
11. What is your impression of Geoffrey Pinchingdale-Snipe?
I like him! He has Richard pegged right away with his feelings about Amy :)
12. Richard is harboring some self-loathing from his relationship with Deirdre. Comments.
Did he tell Deirdre who he was or was it that he let slip about a meeting and that is what got passed along. I was a little confused about that. If Deirdre was seeing someone else while she was with him, shame on her...I like Richard and he deserves better :)
13. Looks like Gaston Delaroche is going to be the “Big Fuc#er” in this story. Do you think I am right? BTW, I had to look up nom de guerre = name of war So Delaroche thinks the Purple Gentian is Scarlet Pimpernel. Yep, I think you got the BF right. I'm surprised that the list he compiled was almost right on the money. All of those men have something shady going on.
14. Gwen" Meadows, Amy & Jane's spinster chaperone is cracking me up. I would want to meet her in a dark alley. No question here, just an observation.
I nearly peed my pants when Gwen hit Napoleon! I'd be very afraid of making her unhappy with me LOL
15. Will Amy make a real friend in Hortense? Will Pauline Leclerc get her eyes scratched out? Will Amy get into trouble tonight, or later in the story?
I kind of hope Amy and Hortense will become friends. And yes, I think Pauline will get her eyes scratched out. I was really surprised Amy didn't go pull her off Richard. It was definitely an impulsive move that is typical Amy behavior. As for Amy getting in trouble, it's inevitable. I had to laugh that neither of them noticed the Purple Gentian called her Amy. I can't wait for her to think back on their conversation and realize. Speaking of laughing, Richard bumbling his way into the study was kind of funny as well.
@ Susan#8 – Ah! Yes, you could be right about his reasons.
#9 – I don’t think Edouard forgot either. I just can’t figure out about his mentioning their mother’s bedroom and the West Wing.
#10 – You know, you could very well be right! It makes more sense that Jane is the PC than Amy.
#11 – I like him too; hope he’s not the BF.
#12 – I not clear exactly. He told her something he shouldn’t have when he was jealoud over Baron Jerard, right before the hunt. Then she told her maid and the maid was a spy. So, he feels that it was his concentrating on her and trying to, I don’t know “sway” her affections, that caused him to let pertinent information slip. That is what I get out of it, anyway.
#13 – Yup. Almost spot-on, so he’s no dummy.
#14 – Yes, that scene was LOL funny. Loved listening to it on audio.
#15 – I like Hortense too. Love the study scene too.
Susan (susayq) wrote: "I'm loving this! It really sucks that I have a life and I can't read constantly LOL I'll do the next set of questions (ch 16-23) later this evening :)"Did you mean you were going to write them, Susan? I'm just checking.
Susan's Questions for chapter 16-2316. Did you notice there was someone dressed in black, rolling their eyes while Richard and Amy kissed? I wonder who that was. Any ideas?
17. What do you think Amy will do with her percieved knowledge that Georges Marston is the Purple Gentian?
18. Back to the future! I almost forget that we're getting a flashback reading about Amy and Richard. Colin had an interesting reaction to Eloise's question about where Serena was. Why? I thought Colin was nicer this time in his conversation with Eloise. Why do you think he threw that non-disclosure stuff out about what Eloise finds out?
19. AHA! The wounded man lives! And he's at Tuillieries! Would you care to speculate on his identity?
20. A lot happened in the last few chapters of this section - Amy got some important information, she sent a note to Marston for a clandestine meeting, Richard (disguised as the Purple Gentian) saved her from Marston, they came up with a plan to intercept the gold, and a smoking hot boat ride! Do you think Amy figured out who the Purple Gentian is because of his comment about making a necklace out of stars for her? I kind of hope she did ;) Comments on any of this?
Susan's Questions for Chapters 16-23 16. Did you notice there was someone dressed in black, rolling their eyes while Richard and Amy kissed? I wonder who that was. Any ideas?
Yes, who wasthat? He was on “the other side of the windowpane” – was it her brother? It couldn’t be Geoffrey, could it? Wasn’t that her house?
17. What do you think Amy will do with her perceived knowledge that Georges Marston is the Purple Gentian?
She’s going to jump in and jump to conclusions! (view spoiler)
I think he wants whatever he knows to remain secret. Maybe he has a mistaken impression about something. Anyway, it sure pushed her button, as she thought that was the only reason he was being nice to her.
19. AHA! The wounded man lives! And he's at Tuillieries! Would you care to speculate on his identity?
I didn’t know – and still don’t; however, I think taita may be right (view spoiler)

Hmmmm… I don’t think she knows yet. But you could be right; she might use that to figure it out later... when he, Richard, plans on hitting on her. The PG sure broke her heart. **sigh**
Lisa Kay’s Questions for Chapters 24 – 34 21. Whoa, Richard almost forgot where he was. Nice that he has the help of the boatman, but, drat!, I could have used that for the Location, location, location! Challenge. LOL! Anyway, it shows that he really is attracted to Amy. Too bad he broke her heart. And he is still having wishy-washy doubts about her. Comments.
22. Do you mind being pulled back to the present day with Eloise’s POV chapters?
23. Delaroche has spies everywhere. With regards to DQ#16, could it have been one of his spies rolling their eyes?
24. You were right, Susan, the “necklace of stars” phrase gave Richard away. And everyone knew but Amy. See, Jane is pretty smart! Comments. What do you think of Amy’s revenge plan? And that Miss Gwen approves?!
25. Back to Present Day: Amy’s not the Pink Carnation? Huh? Well, at least the relationship between Colin and Serena is revealed. What do you think that means to Eloise? I think Serena is pregnant. You?
26. Well, we found out who the wounded man was. Were you as surprised and I was? I like that Jane so efficiently got rid of Georges Marston. Think we’ve seen the last of him? What will Edouard have to say about it all?
27. What do you think of Lord and Lady Uppington and the rest of Richard’s family? Wouldn’t you think Amy, or Jane or Miss Gwen would know he has more than a brief dalliance in mind if he’s bringing his family & friends over at that time of night, wouldn’t you? Feeling about the walking in the courtyard? Afterward, I thought the “three girls with their heads together” was too much of a “teenager” giggling scene for my taste. The author’s first misstep, IMHO.
28. Did I say the boat in front of a boatman was an indiscreet location? Ha! Delaroche’s bedroom is more so. I know you didn’t stop there, but I will. Comments?

Maybe it's just me, but I've never been so into it that I've forgotten where I was LOL he did break her heart and I'm kinda mad at him for the wishy-washy doubts. At least he's thinking he could be with her as Richard. He's just not thinking about what she'll do when she finds out who his alter-ego is.
22. Do you mind being pulled back to the present day with Eloise’s POV chapters?
YES!! I'm not getting nearly enough of the present day to be interested in it and I'm consumed with the past LOL
23. Delaroche has spies everywhere. With regards to DQ#16, could it have been one of his spies rolling their eyes?
I guess it could have been one of his spies.
24. You were right, Susan, the “necklace of stars” phrase gave Richard away. And everyone knew but Amy. See, Jane is pretty smart! Comments. What do you think of Amy’s revenge plan? And that Miss Gwen approves?!
I was right that it gave him away. But I was sure she caught on right then LOL I was shocked that Miss Gwen approved of the plan and even wanted it a little more fierce :)
25. Back to Present Day: Amy’s not the Pink Carnation? Huh? Well, at least the relationship between Colin and Serena is revealed. What do you think that means to Eloise? I think Serena is pregnant. You?
Yes, I am thinking Serena is preggo. And I was really shocked that Amy wasn't the Pink Carnation.
26. Well, we found out who the wounded man was. Were you as surprised and I was? I like that Jane so efficiently got rid of Georges Marston. Think we’ve seen the last of him? What will Edouard have to say about it all?
Very surprised by who he was. I was impressed by Jane's handling of Georges Marston. I've finished the book and can say that I'm a little surprised that (view spoiler)
I did figure Miss Gwen would realize there was something to him bringing his family over at that time of night. The walk would have been a perfect opportunity for him to spill the beans, but he missed it. As for the girls giggling, it was a bit much, but Amy is a little immature with all her grandiose plans, so it does fit her personality.
28. Did I say the boat in front of a boatman was an indiscreet location? Ha! Delaroche’s bedroom is more so. I know you didn’t stop there, but I will. Comments?
Nope, I didn't stop there!LOL I finished the book. I love how Richard forgets himself when he's in Amy's presence. Too bad he's a "superhero" and shouldn't be doing that ;)
@ Susan#21 – LOL!
#22 – I didn’t mind it for the first half of the book, I even liked the story. However, as I became caught up in Amy & Richard’s story, it started to bug me a little.
#23 – I’m about 20 minutes from the end of the audio… do we ever find out who it was?
#24 – “Fierce” – that’s a good word for Miss Gwen.
#25 – Still not done, but if it is (view spoiler)
#26 – Good point!
#27 – All true. Amy really is quite young.
#28 – LMAO! True about the “superhero.”
I really liked this book and went on to the next in the series. Just curious... Anyone else going to continue the series?I've read to # 3 so far with intentions of continuing on to the end.
Oh, great, Susan! Shall we start planning a "buddy read" of that one?
BTW, here is my GoodReads review of
Yes! To both the ebooks and the buddy read! I love my goodreads friends cause they enable my reading addiction by offering me books and offering to read them with me :D
Sorry I am really
Great, Niq! I'll be glad to return comments, if you want to answer the DQs, or however you want to do it. ☺
Lisa Kay wrote: "Great, Niq! I'll be glad to return comments, if you want to answer the DQs, or however you want to do it. ☺"Yeah, thanks, Lisa Kay. I'm finding the start of this semester a bit overwhelming, and feel like I need to drastically cut down on extraneous readings. :)
Niq! Enjoy the book at your pace. I remember the days of being in college and trying to read for enjoyment as well. It doesn't always work LOL That's why I would consume lots of fun reading in between semesters :)
Why does RL (real life) have to cut into our reading time?! lolI remember when I first started it, I wasn't sure how I'd like the 1st person view. But I got into it fairly quickly.
FYI, I took down the bookcover of this one from our group's homepage; however, that was just to make room for The Raven Prince.
Yes and I actually appreciated the 1st POV once I got into the story. What's ya'lls opinion of Colin? I didn't care much for him at first. I don't want to give any spoilers but their story continues through the books.
He was an asshat to begin with. No spoilers for me, Pamela, as I knew they story continued throughout the books.
I did kind of wonder why he didn't clarify his relationship with his sister. Thought that was weird.
I'm not too sure what Colin's deal is....he was horribly rude about the letters and then lied by omission about Serena being his sister. I knew their story continued. I hope their relationship improves.
Finally got around to picking up the book again. Sorry ladies... got sick right after the kids. Feeling better now though. ;-)Susan's Questions for chapter 16-23
16. Did you notice there was someone dressed in black, rolling their eyes while Richard and Amy kissed? I wonder who that was. Any ideas?
I noticed that too. Makes me think there is someone even more devious to watch out for than LaRouche and Fouche.
17. What do you think Amy will do with her percieved knowledge that Georges Marston is the Purple Gentian?
I literally cringed when she passed on that message to the page. Oh Lord! What a pickle, but thank goodness Richard was able to pick up on the assignation and HELP rescue her (because actually, I think she was doing a pretty good job of protecting herself).
18. Back to the future! I almost forget that we're getting a flashback reading about Amy and Richard. Colin had an interesting reaction to Eloise's question about where Serena was. Why?
Maybe he doesn't think of his relationship with Serena that way. It's kind of shadowing the whole thing with Richard, Amy, and Pauline I think. He must me intrigued and amused that she is even concerned about who he dates?
I thought Colin was nicer this time in his conversation with Eloise. Why do you think he threw that non-disclosure stuff out about what Eloise finds out?
I think it's the same thing Richard and Amy... like he's trying to throw her off his scent or protect himself from his feelings. I'm sure he knows it annoys the living daylights out of Eloise.
19. AHA! The wounded man lives! And he's at Tuillieries! Would you care to speculate on his identity?
I still think he is some kind of spy. Not sure what side anymore though.
I was beginning to fear that the book was getting a little tame. I enjoyed the adventure and the hot boat ride. (Get some!) I'm so glad that Amy was able to find out the plans but I was frustrated that Richard had to go doubt her motives and feel like he had to end the "relationship". Poor Amy! I wanted to give her a hug.
taita, I didn't even make the connection between what's happening with Richard and Amy and Colin and Eloise. But you're right. There are similarities.
@ taita#16 – True! Could be.
#17 – I think she was doing a pretty good job too!
#18 – I hadn’t thought of that. Or that. LOL!
#20 – I wanted to hug her too. Interesting how one want to hug a fictional character.
This last set of chapters was HI-larious to me, with a capital HI! I couldn't stop laughing. I had to wipe tears it was so funny. Lisa Kay’s Questions for Chapters 24 – 34
21. Comments.
I was thinking the same about the Location, Location, Location Challenge too. Drat! I loved this scene. It was quite sweet though the star thing was a little "gooey". (I read a little ahead and thought that was also a funny description that richard gave his parents' flirting.) I never was in a situation where I forgot where I was, but I did get so carried away that I didn't CARE. LOL. There... now I have to go to Confession. By the way... wasn't it funny the who "I'm jealous of myself" dialogue that Richard had? Classic!
22. Do you mind being pulled back to the present day with Eloise’s POV chapters?
I didn't mind so much at first, but I am starting to get a little annoyed now that I am so vested in Richard and Amy. I'm just not getting enough from the Eloise and Colin story. Plus, masks are more sexy.
23. Delaroche has spies everywhere. With regards to DQ#16, could it have been one of his spies rolling their eyes?
Ahhh.... that explains my earlier suspicion. I read little ahead so when it's revealed that (view spoiler)
24. You were right, Susan, the “necklace of stars” phrase gave Richard away. And everyone knew but Amy. See, Jane is pretty smart! Comments. What do you think of Amy’s revenge plan? And that Miss Gwen approves?!
I think Jane is so smart! She knows exactly how to handle Amy... let her spin and work off her passionate ideas until she eventually comes to reason on her own because nothing you say will dissuade her until she comes to that conclusion herslef. So wise, and such a good counter to Amy. LOVE her! Also love Miss Gwen. Something told me she was one to watch. I still think she is THE Pink Carnation. She's too spunky not to be!
25. Back to Present Day: Amy’s not the Pink Carnation? Huh? Well, at least the relationship between Colin and Serena is revealed. What do you think that means to Eloise? I think Serena is pregnant. You?
You know what I originally thought, but there were a couple of times where I doubted my own prediction. I was still surprised by what Colin said. She's not? Wha?!?!? And oh... didn't think about Serena being preggo. I think you're right! Awww... that means Colin is even a nicer guy than I thought. I'm such a sucker for bad boys.
26. Well, we found out who the wounded man was. Were you as surprised and I was? I like that Jane so efficiently got rid of Georges Marston. Think we’ve seen the last of him? What will Edouard have to say about it all?
I thought he was a spy, but it totally makes sense now. That Jane... so clever. Ta Ta Georges. Jerk! I hope that's the last we see of him. Edouard... what a coward. I wanted to thrash him myself for not sticking up for his sister.
I enjoyed the whole scene with the family and I love each and every one of them. I'm sure everyone else can read between the lines here except Amy. It's funny for someone so clever at espionage that she is so clueless about love. Ha Ha. I think we could have done without the school girl scene, but maybe the author's trying to set up some friendship between the three ladies since they are all so uncommonly adventurous?
28. Did I say the boat in front of a boatman was an indiscreet location? Ha! Delaroche’s bedroom is more so. I know you didn’t stop there, but I will. Comments?
LOL. I think most of us predicted this revealing under duress, but maybe the "not in a dress" scene. I thought it couldn't be done better. I like how the author keeps shocking me.
I'm heading into the home stretch on this. Couple of questions before I do and get the answers for myself (I hope).
a) Anyone else wondering if Amy & Richard will end up married? Don't you think Eloise would know this being a historian and having studied these characters extensively?
b) Did you notice that one of the characters (was it Amy?) mentioned a distaste for Turnips? Isn't the next book about the Black Turnip? Hmmm.....
c) So I did read a little ahead. Wasn't Richard gallant when he was captured? Sigh.
@ taita#21 – Loved that Richard used that word. LOL! I’ve gotten so carried away I’ve forgotten how a piece of clothing got off… and where it went. Yes, these chapters were hilarious, taita!
#22 – Ditto! And about the masks, ditto again.
#23 – Oh, dear! I think you’re going to have to go to confession for dropping all those F-Bombs, taita instead of any Location thing. LOL!
#24 – You’re right! She is very adept at handling Amy.
#25 – You’re smarter than you think!
#26 – Really! Edouard is a **blows raspberry**
#27 – Good point; could be.
#28 – Yes, love that the author titillates me.
a) Anyone else wondering if Amy & Richard will end up married? Don't you think Eloise would know this being a historian and having studied these characters extensively?
I hadn’t thought of that, but you’re right; she would know.
b) Did you notice that one of the characters (was it Amy?) mentioned a distaste for Turnips? Isn't the next book about the Black Turnip? Hmmm.....
I didn’t notice that! LOL! I have to do a search of the word in the book, LOL!
c) So I did read a little ahead. Wasn't Richard gallant when he was captured? Sigh.
Very! **sigh**
taita wrote: "Plus, masks are more sexy."LOL yes they are!
I didn't even think about Eloise knowing that Richard and Amy were married. She should have known that.
Yes, I did notice someone mentioned a distaste for turnips. The next book isn't about turnips, but there is one with turnips in the title.
Yes, Richard was very gallant when he was captured. In fact, I think I may make him my bonus in the Who's your Hero Challenge since mine is the Knight and that was VERY knightly!

Yes, I did notice someone me..."
Pardon! It was VERY early in the morning when I wrote about Turnips and realized the next book was about Tulips. Turnips? Tulips? So similar!
But yes, the first book I read was about Turnip -
The Mischief of the Mistletoe and it was very funny too. I think I mentioned that I was surprised to find that that book was only about a side character. Amazing!
