So I looked this up and I saw this:

Black Dawn Night World by L.J. Smith

It talked about slaves and a girl with mismatched socks. I hope this is what you are looking for.

I do remember this series. My cousins had them all and I would read them while I was visiting. I think Buffy is correct on the author name.

I read L.J. Smith's Vampire Diaries series, but that stuff doesn't sound familiar. Must be another series. I loved The Vamprire Diaries though!

I LOVED this series. It was written by L J Smith. The name of the series was The Night World and the books go in this order:

Secret Vampire
Daughters of Darkness
Spellbinder/Enchantress
Dark Angel
The Chosen
Soulmate
Huntress
Black Dawn
Witchlight

It was all leading up to a big finish with the book Strange Fate but it was never released. I have heard a rumor that Smith is writing again so we may actually get an ending even if it is years later.
I do believe that these books are out of print but I know her Vampire Diaries have just been reprinted so maybe they will be released again.
