Well, I crossed another one off my list, but not for a good reason. I crossed off My Reading Life by Bob Carr because I absolutely could not get a copy. I tried to interlibrary loan it, but the only two copies are at Harvard and in New Zealand. Sigh. I really wanted to read it, too.

So, I started another one. Got 2 pages in, and was absolutely certain I was not going to get any further. This was definitely NOT the book for me. Sci-fi/Noir/Plague/Murder-Mystery not the thing for me. So, I scratched Finch right off.

Oh, I can see how it would be fabulous for someone else. In fact, it got lots of rave reviews, which is probably how it got on my list in the first place. But I am a hyooge wimp, and I couldn't handle it. I would recommend it if it sounded good. The writing was good, I will say that.

This one, I actually read. I really liked A Ticket to the Circus: A Memoir. Which is weird because I really would not have put up with what she did just to say I stay married to Norman Mailer the longest. He was really no prize, in my opinion. I'm sure his children think differently, but I wouldn't want to be married to him.

I finished my first set of 10, and have read 3 on my second list. My goal is to finish the other seven before the end of the year.

Wow! I'm impressed. The reason my 10 are on my list is because I've had a hard time getting them off the bottom of the piles of my books...and it's still hard for me to get going on them even while they're on the list. I wish I had your dedication and stick-to-it-ness to get my list done!

I've finished The Stepford Wives. Wow! It was much better than I had expected it to be. It's much subtler than either of the movie versions, and it feels so tense throughout. The message gets through succinctly without being heavy-handed...a classic of speculative fiction and the fiction of social criticism.

I started This is Not Civilization, read 70 pages, and decided it wasn't worth reading more. I rarely give up on a book, but this just didn't seem worth it. So crossing it off my list.

I am so envious of y'all getting your lost lists done.

I am going to make an effort in the next four months to seriously put a dent in mine. I am adding them to challenges for SRC and RwS. And, in order to make sure that they do not get passed up again, I plan to start reading them in September. So far I have 3 planned for challenges out of 9 to still be read. Not a great big dent but still a dent.

Oh, and, the one I keep trying and failing to read...the one that I abandoned earlier this year --- Les Misérables - that one, yes...well, Tien has started a read-along for it, and I plan to participate! Yippee! I really would like to finish that book as it is good....just too BIG!

I also have started and never finished Midwives, which is on my LOST list. Perhaps I can get motivated to make a decision on it to either abandon it (I HATE giving up on books) or finish it. As I remember, it was not a book I hated but rather one I lost interest in.

Finally, I have discovered that one issue with my LOST list is I have some very big books on it. Still to read are The Bourne Sanction (not quite 500 pages but close), Roses and John Adams.

My goal will be to get 7/10 read by December 31 - leaving those three big ones but including finishing Les Misérables. That will be a good accomplishment for me.

I finished The Bone Collector. It's an old mystery series, but I had never read any of them before, and am glad to have discovered them. I gave it 3 stars. My review here .

This brings me to 6 down, 4 to go. And I'm starting The Maltese Goddess right away, while I wait for September to arrive so I can start an urban fantasy book.

My goal for myself is to finish my last 4 before the new challenge starts in October. Not sure whether that has a chance of happening, since Dune is one of the books the list (long), and since I found so many to read in September's urban fantasy shelf.

But I did read The Maltese Goddess, and enjoyed it as I do each of Hamilton's archeology-themed mysteries. My review here .

So I now have 3 left to finish this month.

Oops. Question. Since I crossed one book off my list (deciding not to ever finish it n-- see message #145), do I need to add the next one down? I'm not clear about how we treat those.
