Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I was wondering if anybody else has this ...illness

Whenever I see a picture in a magazine with books on the background or tv, a movie with books on the background, I a always trying to figure out which books there are on the shelves. I am just curious to see what other people read or what they put on the shelves for instance in movies.
Anybody else does this?

message 2: by Atishay (new)

Atishay | 1451 comments I'm very curious about what people read while travelling. That's when I play the waiting game, hoping that the other one'll ask me what I'm reading and I'll get a chance to ask what he's reading.. :)

message 3: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 163 comments I do not really look @ bookshelves on tv or movies but I was on the T the other day and people around were reading and I did find myself glancing over to see what book they had in their hands.

message 4: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Jeane, I do the same thing while watching films or reading magazines. If there is ever a book in the picture I am compelled to discover the title, even if it's completely unrelated to the film. I like to take my reading suggestions from fictional characters at times, who am I to discount their opinions?

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 636 comments hahha i do the same thing. for instance..i was reading my Nylon magazine the other day..and in one of the photoshoots they have a bookshelf in the background..i kept trying to see if i could read what the titles were..but i couldn't! Nice to know i'm not the only one who does this!

message 6: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 175 comments I do that all the time! I was so excited to see Sexual Personae on a bookshelf on an old episode of Friends the other day. Grad school has made me a literary theory nerd.

message 7: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I always try to read the covers too Jeane! (It's usually hard to do, though, and then I'm curious, esp. if I got like 1 or 2 words.)

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

I always look at peoples bookshelves. I like to see is we have common reading interests.

message 9: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I'm more like Atishay...I look at what people read when I'm traveling. I know people probably think I'm rude because I'm staring at them, but I'm really trying to read their book title.

message 10: by Dorie (new)

Dorie (dorieann) | 430 comments I had that problem with the movie ‘Holiday’ (the one with Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet). There is this one scene where I believe Jude Law opened his heart up with a long speech to Cameron’s character, but I missed it in its entirety. Jude was propped directly in front of a large bookcase crammed with books, so I of course spent the entire scene with my head tilted, trying to read the titles. Don’t the moviemakers know how distracting that is?

Lost Lovers will agree with me when I say this....

Sometimes the book in the tv show is planted there just for that purpose! It has links or was used as inspiration for the show.....

message 12: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 175 comments Lori, I have a hard time believing any books are there "by accident," but I never really followed the books on Lost too closely. I'll have to fix that.

If you are a lost fan, you should check out the Lost Lit List...... I have it posted on here (a loooong time ago) and also on my other group here Flight 815-ers Unite.....

Great reads on there!

message 14: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (missfryer) | 453 comments I always check out other's bookshelves.
I looked at a house a couple of weeks ago and they had bookshelves right by the front door. I freaked the realtor out...he said, "Uh..miss? Would you like to look at the house now? Or stay here and stare at the books?"

message 15: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (missfryer) | 453 comments Dorie, I know the scene you are talking about! :)

message 16: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments This is a social problem I have.
Anytime I see someone reading a book or holding a book I have to strain my neck in various proportions to try and see what they are reading.
The other day, I was walking next to a guy with a Greg Iles book. Didn't know him from Adam but asked him how he liked it.
If I was single, I wonder if that would have been a good pick up line?
I love to see what other people are reading and almost always, they are excited to talk about it.

It's been a while since I have been to someone's house with a bookshelf but the last time I was, I scanned it pretty thoroughly. The lady is actually in my bookclub so she didn't think I was weird.

Fun thread!

message 17: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 175 comments Kellie, it's probably a pick-up line I'd prefer over some of the others I've heard. After all, reading is clearly the way to my heart. Actually, my cousin met one of his ex-girlfriends by walking up to her on the beach when they were both reading the same book.

Lori, thanks for the recommendation! I love the show, but I got so caught up in catching up that the books never made it to my priority list. Now that I'm fully caught up, I'll check it out.

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I do this all the time!! And I love it when people ask me what I am reading. I always have my next tbr book laying around so everyone can see what great taste I have.

message 19: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments LOL Catherine.
Isn't that interesting about your cousin?
I didn't really read much until AFTER I was married so that would have never happened to me.

message 20: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I'll tell you a secret. Often in the movies, plays too sometimes, the books are actually bought by the foot. The client specifies the look they are going for and the supplier will send them the right books whether they are old leather tomes or flashy new hardbacks.

Interior designers furnishing a house will also buy books designed to look right. I suppose it must be fun to come into a home and see all these books you've never read. On the other hand, I suppose the people who need to buy books by the foot aren't readers or else they would have loads of their own.

Check out this link http://www.strandbooks.com/app/www/p/...

message 21: by Heather (new)

Heather Oh, how I miss the Strand! Haven't been there in a few years. Hmmm....sounds like it's time for a road trip to NYC!

message 22: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Books by the foot? At the bookstore I used to work at, we sold them by the yard! :-)

Half Price Books - Books by the Yard

message 23: by Apokripos (new)

Apokripos (apokalypse) Hey Jeane!
Your in good company, I too found myself doing just that. Though as in my case I look if ever they've included some of the books that I've read or have.
I just don't care what other people are reading--it's their own choice. I just look for those which other people have in their bookshelves or have read because that for me establishes some kind of a connection with others. What me and others have read are good starting points to start a worthwhile conversation. It's in always knowing what a particular books means for someone and how did that book changed their life that I find more fascinating.
My warm regards and happy reading.. ^_^

message 24: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Those books by the yard are really cheap too. I guess there must be some major difference if Strand can charge so much more for so much less books.

message 25: by JG (Introverted Reader) (last edited Nov 10, 2008 01:27AM) (new)

JG (Introverted Reader) How many people are still trying to read the titles in the pictures in those links?
:-) I think I only do this if one of the titles catches my eye for some reason. I do look to see what other people are reading, but I rarely approach them about it. Too shy, I guess.

message 26: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Yes, you people do it too!!!! :-)

I also am always watching what other people are reading like on the bus or airport. It isn't because I want to know what oter people are reading, or jsut a little bit but more to find out about books. Of course it is great when I see someone reading a book I liked or would like to read...that person gets such a positive image of me then! :-)
But in the end, whenever I see somehere a book my attention just goes to it. I love books to much. It's like when I see a dog near me, I will have watched it!

message 27: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Well, the books The Strand sells by the foot are new and/or collector's editions, so that makes a huge difference in price. The books Half Price Books sells by the yard are primarily used books consisting of Reader's Digest condensed books, reference books, law books, and/or bargain fiction and nonfiction books...so they are pretty aptly priced for what you get (a look of books more than books you would probably be inclined to curl up with). :-)

The books from The Strand look really nice!!

message 28: by Alycia (new)

Alycia (malfoyfangirl) | 22 comments I have done this a bit. It's not an illness! My father is in construction and growing up wherever we went, he would talk about materials used, or critique the craftmanship. Whatever your passion, it's fun to indulge!

I'm usually the hostess for parties/holidays/gatherings so I just look at my shelves. When I do visit someone with a library, of course I like to see their book choices.

Maranda (addlebrained_reader) (mannadonn) | 133 comments Haha! I can't say that I've done that with movies or television shows before but I probably will now!

I do look at people's books when I'm at their houses and I practically break my neck sometimes trying to find out what strangers are reading on the plane or in a waiting room or anywhere I see someone reading...

message 30: by Julie (new)

Julie (scrapsofhistory) I know exactly what you mean. I was in the check out isle tonight and saw a photo of Oprah's bookshelf. I was staring trying to figure out some of the titles.
