I think so too - I found the whole combat scene they were in together, without really laying eyes on one another, to be too contrived.
It was like a Tom & Jerry / Wile E. Coyote & Roadrunner / Sylvester & Tweety sketch - they were both running around the same space in the same time, but she never quite got to him. Meanwhile, he's sort of bumbling around like, "I tawt I taw anudder lightsaber!"

I really enjoy the star wars novels written by Zahn. I liked this one because it was placed in a time period where there are not a lot of star wars novels (rebellion era). It was kinda interesting reading Luke in his early "farm boy" personna after reading so many books with him as Grand Master Skywalker. I think it helped with his character development to show he wasn't always a master (or even a Jedi for that matter). Mara Jade is one of my favorite characters too and this book helped show her as a person with moral dilemmas and not just a tool of the emperor.

I think it suffered a bit from Skywalker and Mara not being able to meet. But in all, it was a fun read ^^
