Wilhelmina Jenkins | 2049 comments What a night at the National Book Awards! Jesmyn Ward won the award for fiction for her novel Salvage the Bones. Nikky Finney won the poetry award for her collection Head Off and Split. And Thanhha Lai won in the Young People's Literature category for Inside Out and Back Again. Congratulations to all!

Here's more info:

Here's Finney reading a poem from the prize winning collection entitled "Left":

This is really great! Is it just me or has there been an increase in writers of color being recognized in the last several years for these prestigious awards?! Funny, I'm about 40 pages from finishing Salvage the Bones now and I'm not certain whether I like this or not. It's undoubtably well written but just not what I expected. I would really like to know what others think who've finished the book.

Mistinguette Smith | 191 comments I just tried to order Nikkey Finney's "Head Off & Split" on amazon. It's listed at a price of $56.82, which means that it's out of stock. I hope that means it's sold out! Guess I'll have to order it from TriQuarterly. If you're looking for where to order it, here is the place online:

I am getting a copy of SALVAGE THE BONE this afternoon. I also have WE THE ANIMALS. Don't know about it. It's due back at the library.
