I just love this story -- love as a curse for the sin of being loveless. It's such an orginal idea and the "lover" really is repulsive!

An interesting companion piece is Anne Sexton's "Ghost," in which a girl is tormented by the "loving" attentions of a completely insane ghost -- it's one of the most disturbing ghost stories ever.

Agreed, it's a great story. Very original, and with an interesting ambiguity about whether he 'deserves' it all or not.

Not read that Anne Sexton story, but the description really makes it sound like my kind of thing. Will check it out...
