Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Pamela, I'm going to put this on the RLftCI "buddy read" calendar, okay?

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 1216 comments I haven't read the first two in the series yet, but I have them & could read them in early December. My hesitation is that we'll be gone for Christmas with the kids until Dec. 28, and the only books I plan on taking with me are on my iPod (we play lots of card & board games when we get together). So my participation would be late - I'll try to check in on the 29th to see how everyone is doing!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Lisa Kay’s Questions for Chapters 1 – 5

1. I love the cover on this one. Neat that Ms. Hoyt was at the staging for the bookcover. The bath in the background, the rings on Charming Mickey’s fingers. Do you like it?

2. Unlike the previous books in the Maiden Lane series, I’m not familiar with the fairy tale at the beginning of each chapter; I like it! Have you heard of it, or some facsimile, before? Do you like it? Are you tempted to read ahead – just the beginning of chapters, of course?

3. What do you make of Charming Mickey’s plotting to get Silence in his palace? I don’t blame her for being suspicious. Obviously, however, there is a real threat from the Vicar o’ Whitechapel; regardless, Mickey’s inner thoughts reveal his plotting and planning. What of using Mary Darling to do so? Yet the best laid plans go astray. . . Comments?

4. That is quite a household at Charming Mickey’s palace. Do you have a favorite secondary character?

5. What is the beef between Charlie Grady and Charming Mickey O’Conner? Was it a woman; if so, what relation did she have to each? And, more important, who is the spy inside Mickey’s palace leaking info?

6. Who is the Ghost of St. Giles? Any prime suspects? Are they guesses, hunches, or based on facts you can site?

7. Whatever could that little leather notebook in the Fairweather ’s captain’s cabin be all about? Location to a hidden treasure? Something to blackmail him with?

8. That was a pretty intense scene at the end of Chapter 5. What did you think about Silence telling Mickey his manipulations had effectively “silenced” her? (view spoiler) How about his parting comment? Easy to declare; harder to really mean it, live with it. Will that come back to bite him in the tushie?

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments I guess I should have indicated that this was an event; that way, notices would have been sent out that we were starting this book. Hindsight: always 20/20.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments I'm going to start working on the next set of questions for chapters 6 - 10. I'm doing this set for CaroB. ☺ If anyone wants to sign-up for chapters 11 -15, just let Pamela or I know. Thanks!

message 41: by Pamela(AllHoney), Fairy Godmother (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14526 comments Made it to chapter 3 last night ☺ Hopefully I'll have time to read here shortly. Still fighting an ear infection but I'll be okay. I haven't read the questions yet but I hope to get to them soon.

message 42: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Lord! An ear infection. Ugh. I used to get those a lot. I hope you feel better soon. I'm working on something else right now, so I'll probably post the questions later tonight.

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14526 comments 1. I love the cover on this one. Neat that Ms. Hoyt was at the staging for the bookcover. The bath in the background, the rings on Charming Mickey’s fingers. Do you like it?
Yes, I love the cover. I remember reading Mickey explaining about his rings. Great that they remembered to include them on the cover.

2. Unlike the previous books in the Maiden Lane series, I’m not familiar with the fairy tale at the beginning of each chapter; I like it! Have you heard of it, or some facsimile, before? Do you like it? Are you tempted to read ahead – just the beginning of chapters, of course?
I read the fairy tale earlier. I think she had it on her website or something. I liked it.

Yet the best laid plans go astray. . . Comments?
Reminds me a bit of Harry in Lisa Kleypas' Tempt Me at Twilight. Harry knew what he wanted and got it. Mickey has the same possessing attitude. He wants something - he gets it. It is a bit sad that he "uses" Mary but, ultimately, I know that his heart will soften and all will be well.

4. That is quite a household at Charming Mickey’s palace. Do you have a favorite secondary character?
Probably Harry but I like Bert too. I love it when the secondary characters add so much to the story.

5. What is the beef between Charlie Grady and Charming Mickey O’Conner? Was it a woman; if so, what relation did she have to each? And, more important, who is the spy inside Mickey’s palace leaking info?
I'm wondering if Charlie is Mickey's father. Or maybe a step father? The spy is .... well, I don't know. I'm thinking Finnoula, maybe, or Bran. Don't want it to be Harry or Bert but, who knows...

6. Who is the Ghost of St. Giles? Any prime suspects? Are they guesses, hunches, or based on facts you can site?
My guess is Asa but I really don't know.

7. Whatever could that little leather notebook in the Fairweather ’s captain’s cabin be all about? Location to a hidden treasure? Something to blackmail him with?
Didn't really think much of it. But could be, I guess.

8. That was a pretty intense scene at the end of Chapter 5. What did you think about Silence telling Mickey his manipulations had effectively “silenced” her? (view spoiler)[ What about where he put her hand? Sorry, but I wasn’t expecting that! Were you? Crude; but in hindsight, it makes sense to me he would want to shock her. (hide spoiler)] How about his parting comment? Easy to declare; harder to really mean it, live with it. Will that come back to bite him in the tushie?
Mickey is just showing off. Hehe. No, really Mickey has a reputation as a pirate and a general all around bad guy to protect. Nothing is off limits in his mind. Didn't surprise me at all. But I do believe it will all come back at him in the end.

#1 - ☺

#2 – You did! Clever you!

#3 – Well, yes. His ruthless tenacity is like Harry’s. I can see your point. Mickey is certainly more street harden. Just love that Mary Darling calls him, “Bad!” instead of “Dad.”

#4 – Yes, I love amazing secondary characters too.

#5 – Oh! I shall not say a word with regards to Mickey’s paternity, as I know this. I’ll be honest and say I was bouncing around all the secondary characters as insider spies, but ditto on who I didn’t want to be one. I also was thinking the accountant.

#6 – Hmmm… interesting. I can see why you would think that. I wonder if two of the Makepeace brothers teamed up also.

#7 – We’ll see.

#8 – Oh, totally in character; it just brought me out of my seductive fog, LOL! Make me remember what a rascal he was.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Lisa Kay’s (for CaroB ☺) Questions for Chapters 6 – 10

9. Loved Silence’s response to Mickey’s question about Mary Darling ever calling him anything but “Bad!” Did you? She had a good point.

10. What did you think of Isabel Beckinhall, Baroness Bechinhall? Does it look like we are going to have a Mrs. Robinson theme going on between her and Winter in the next installment of this series?

11. Were you worried that Ms. Hoyt might take this story to a darker place when Mary Darling got ill? Or did you know it was a way to reveal Mickey’s “ability” to literally (view spoiler).

12. Mick is taking his time wooing Silence. Is that restraint believable to you? Did you expect Silence to stay and watch Mick when he (view spoiler)

13. “Because”ーhe leaned down and licked at the tears on her cheeks, his lips brushing softly against her sensitive skin as he spoke, “ye’ve bewitched and bespelled me, my sweet Silence, didn’t ye know? I’ll agree that the sky is pink, that the moon is made o’ marzipan and sugared raisins, and that mermaids swim the muddy water o’ the Thames, if ye’ll only stop weepin’. Me chest breaks apart and gapes wide open when I see tears in yer pretty eyes. Me lungs, me liver, and me heart cannot stand to be thus exposed.” Well, okay then. **sigh** That about covers it, doesn’t it?

14. Love the opera! I go about once every other month. Have you ever been? Of course, I’ve never done anything near as naughty as Michael was talking of doing. Mary Darling is right; he is “Bad!” LOL!

15. Oh! What a stopping place! Who has (view spoiler) The Vicar o’ Whitechapel or Silence’s brothers?

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14526 comments 9. Loved Silence’s response to Mickey’s question about Mary Darling ever calling him anything but “Bad!” Did you? She had a good point.
Loved it. I expect Mary to call him something else by the end of the story ☺

10. What did you think of Isabel Beckinhall, Baroness Bechinhall? Does it look like we are going to have a Mrs. Robinson theme going on between her and Winter in the next installment of this series?
Hmmmm. I'm wondering about Winter's hostility towards her, though. What's up with that?

11. Were you worried that Ms. Hoyt might take this story to a darker place when Mary Darling got ill? Or did you know it was a way to reveal Mickey’s “ability” to literally (view spoiler).
I was certainly hoping that it would not take a "dark" turn. But that said, it would take away the reason for Silence to be there. I was sure that it would end well.

12. Mick is taking his time wooing Silence. Is that restraint believable to you? Did you expect Silence to stay and watch Mick when he (view spoiler)
I love it when the author has the characters take their time. It does seen a little more believeable for me. No, didn't expect Silence to watch but I'm glad she did.

13. “Because” he leaned down and licked at the tears on her cheeks, his lips brushing softly against her sensitive skin as he spoke, “ye’ve bewitched and bespelled me, my sweet Silence, didn’t ye know? I’ll agree that the sky is pink, that the moon is made o’ marzipan and sugared raisins, and that mermaids swim the muddy water o’ the Thames, if ye’ll only stop weepin’. Me chest breaks apart and gapes wide open when I see tears in yer pretty eyes. Me lungs, me liver, and me heart cannot stand to be thus exposed.” Well, okay then. **sigh** That about covers it, doesn’t it?
Sigh, yes, it does. Mickey is showing a softer side. That may not bode well for them at this time.

14. Love the opera! I go about once every other month. Have you ever been? Of course, I’ve never done anything near as naughty as Michael was talking of doing. Mary Darling is right; he is “Bad!” LOL!
I've never been to the opera myself but always thought it'd be neat to go at least once in my life. I was almost disappointed that he didn't do what he said. lol

15. Oh! What a stopping place! Who has (view spoiler) The Vicar o’ Whitechapel or Silence’s brothers?
Don't know because I stopped on purpose to answer these questions. Don't think it's the Vicar though. Maybe the soldiers or Silence's brothers? Just don't know. Leaving now to find out.....

#9 - ☺

#10 – I think it would be hard for someone with a puritan upbringing to see someone wearing enough jewels on their feet! (of all impractical places) to feed the whole orphanage for a year.

#12 – I loved the pacing on this one.

#13 – **sighs again**

#14 – Oh, I hope you get to go, Pamela. The music, costumes, and “live” presence of the performers are well worth it. Beautiful. (view spoiler)

#15 – Oh, goodie!
