OWL TYPES

Barn Owl
Tyto alba

Commonly Found (in RP)-
Throughout the Kingdoms
Forest Kingdom of Tyto

Females re generally more spotted than males. Barn Owls are known for their incredibly sensitive sense of hearing, better than other owls, and their silent flying. They can detect sounds from far away and pin-point their locations. They also tend to be more calm and artistic than other owls, and make good leaders.

Lifespan:
17 years (average)

Egg Description:
Broods vary from 2 to16 eggs, although 5 to 7 is the most common.
(The limit is 3 eggs for RP purposes)

Diet:
Mice, rats, voles, gophers, shrews, and a variety of insects, reptiles, fish, and smaller birds.

Habitat:
Prefers open low-lying areas with an abundant vole population. Grasslands and areas of milder climates with hollow trees are a favorite roost.

Grass Owl

Like other Tytos, they also have good hearing, but not as good as Barn Owls. They are very similar to Barn Owls but tend to be more set in their own ways. Sometimes even mistaken for Barn Owls.

Egg Description:
Egg color is dull white. Clutch size of 3-8 eggs.

Diet:
Hunts small rodents; favors rats.

Habitat:
Found in tall grasslands and swampy country.

Masked Owl

Females are larger and darker than males. Masked Owls are like other Tytos, except they are a bit more adaptable, able to adjust easily to new things and changes.

Sooty Owl

Sooty Owls are known to be very smart, with good memory. They are also good friends and very loyal. Some consider them to be the 'lowest' of the Tytos. Also one of the very few owls who hunt tree-dwelling prey and not just ground-dwelling prey; very deadly hunters.

Egg Description:
Eggs are dull white. Clutch size of 1-2 eggs.

Diet:
Hunts small mammals, but also takes insects and some birds.

Bay Owl
Phodilus badius

Bay Owls are not very common, and are usually only found in the forest of Tyto. They like living in one place and dislike moving a lot, and are not very fond of change. They also tend to be a relatively shy species.

Diet:
Small mammals, small birds, reptiles, frogs, insects.

Habitat:
Woodland, plantations, mangrove, up to 2200m.

Great Horned Owl
Bubo virginianus

Great Horned Owls are tough, and determined birds. They also have a bad reputation for being impulsive, and also very brave and clever. Lifespan:
Over 28 years (maximum)

Egg Description:
Clutch size is 1 to 3 eggs on average.

Diet:
Small mammals to rabbits, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects. Will eat carrion if the hunting opportunities are scarce.

Habitat:
Inhabits virtually every type of terrain. Prefers mature deciduous woods with scattered conifers for maximum roosting concealment adjacent to open areas for hunting.

Flammulated Owl
Otus flammeous

The Northern Kingdoms

Flammulated Owls are the smallest of the eared owls, but are still slightly bigger than Elf Owls. They are the most common small owl found in the North. Most are well-trained in the use of Ice Splinters. They are also known for the low "whooping" noises they make. Lifespan:
8.08 years (average in the wild)

Egg Description:
Clutch size is 2-4 eggs.

Diet:
Strictly an insectivore, although will occasionally eat small mammals, birds, or lizards.

Habitat:
Lives in mountainous forested habitats with a thick underbrush layer.

Pygmy Owl

Slightly bigger than Elf Owls, Pygmies are also sensitive to there size, but are usually quiet; some are even shy.

Egg Description:
Average clutch size is 3 eggs.

Diet:
Eats small mammals, small to medium sized birds, reptiles, large insects, and amphibians.

Habitat:
Found near edges of meadows, lakes, burns, and other openings in the forest.

Elf Owl

The Beaks

Elf Owls are very sensitive of their small size, being the smallest of the owls. They insist on proving themselves, and are easily offended when it comes to size. Also good with close combat.

Over 5 years (average)

Egg Description:
Clutch size is from 2-5 eggs, but 3 is the most common.
(The limit is 3 eggs for RP purposes)

Diet:
Diet consists of mainly of spiders, insects, and scorpions, and is exclusively comprised of arthropods.

Habitat:
Found high in the desert, foothills, low mountains, and often in dry habitats. Also found in dense mesquite, dry woodlands, and wooded canyons.

Burrowing Owl
Athene cunicularia

The Beaks

Females are darker than males. Burrowing Owls are wise, and very philosophical, just as good at digging up deeper meanings as they are digging up tunnels with their sturdy legs. Some are also good with healing herbs.

Lifespan:
8.5 years (maximum in wild)

Egg Description:
White. Clutch size can be from 2 to 12 eggs.
(The limit is 3 eggs for RP purposes)

Diet:
Eats things from insects, to scorpions, to small mammals, even reptiles!

Habitat:
Lives in Grasslands. They are dry, open areas with no trees and short grass.

Barred Owl
Strix varia

Females are larger than males. Barred Owls are sometimes mistaken for Spotted Owls due to their similar appearance, and are also similar in their nature.

Lifespan:
23 years (maximum)

Egg Description:
Pure White. Clutch size is usually 2 to 3 eggs.

Diet:
Eats small mammals from mice to rabbits to voles.

Habitat:
Likes to live in thick forest areas.

Spotted Owl
Strix occidentalis

The Northern Kingdoms

Spotted Owls are studious by nature, loving to study books and unique things. They're also considered good fighters. When a Spotted Owl has been brave in battle or has gotten over a great feat, the owl is given the title 'Strix' by another Spotted Owl, or a high-ranking owl. They also have special spots on the back of their heads that distract, or confuse, other owls. This is what gives them their name. They also are sensitive to atmospheric pressure changes which is helpful in storms.

17 years (average)

Egg Description:
White to pearl gray. Clutch size is from 1 to 3 eggs.

Diet:
Small/medium mammals and rodents.

Habitat:
Prefers to live in old-growth coniferous forests.

Snowy Owl
Bubo scandiacus

The Northern Kingdoms

Females are larger and more heavily marked than males. Snowy Owls are very noble, usually having strong senses of whats right and wrong, and are sometimes considered stubborn. They also make great trackers. Snowies have beautiful singing voices. The singer at the Great Tree is almost always a snowy.

Lifespan:
28 years (maximum)

Egg Description:
White. Clutch size is from 3 to 11 eggs.
(The limit is 3 for RP purposes.)

Diet:
Lemming, rodents, rabbits, waterfowl and other birds and fish.

Habitat:
On open tundra.

Great Gray Owl
Strix nebulosa

Great Gray Owls are very loud, and enduring, with terrific eyesight. They are good in battles; most love a good fight. Some also tend to be talented poets.

Lifespan:
27 years (maximum)

Egg Description:
White.

Diet:
Small mammals, especially rodents.

Habitat:
Boreal Forest.

Brown Fish Owl
Bubo zeylonensis

Brown Fish Owls are very unique. They have perfected the technique of diving into the water and scooping up fish. It comes naturally to them, unlike other owls. They are also very generous and forgiving owls.

Egg Description:
Clutch usually contains 1-2 eggs. Incubation time is 38 days.

Diet:
Fishes, frogs, aquatic crustaceans.

Habitat:
Ranges from open woodlands to dense forests.

Long-Eared Owl
Asio otus

The Northern Kingdoms

Females are darker than males. Long-Eared Owls are more likely to be followers than leaders. The tend to be very obedient, but can also sometimes easily be swayed in there decisions. They sometimes have short tempers.

27.75 years (maximum)

White. Clutch size is from 2 to 10 eggs.

Diet:
Small mammals, sometimes birds.

Habitat:
Dense vegetation adjacent to open grassland or shrubland, and open forests.

Short-Eared Owl

Females are larger and darker than males. Short-Eared Owls are friendly, and very out going. They can also be very strong and excellent fliers. They have very strong personalities.

Lifespan:
13 years (average in wild)

Diet:
Mainly small mammals especially voles and lemmings but also birds up to pigeon size and insects.

Habitat:
Open habitat including pastures, moors, tundra downland etc normally with scattered trees or bushes.

Boreal Owl
Aegolius funereus

Boreal Owls are gifted with beautiful singing voices, like Snowys, but with a more bell like sound. They have very strong hearts. Boreal Owls have a special tradition called 'Tolling to Gluamora'; when another Boreal Owl is dying, they set the owl under a bell or a bell tower and sing.

Lifespan:
16 years (maximum)

Egg Description:
Clutch includes 3-6 eggs.

Diet:
Small mammals, other birds and insects.

Habitat:
Mainly old growth coniferous forest and mountainous regions.

Whiskered Screech-Owl
Megascops trichopsis

The Northern Kingdoms

Whiskered Screech-Owls can be very tough, gruff characters. They are extremely durable--easily able to adapt to harsh environments, like storms--because most come from the unforgiving north. They are very wise, and have a way with words. They are also similar to other Screech-Owls.

Diet:
Eats insects, particularly moths, beetles, spiders, grasshoppers, and centipedes.

Habitat:
Resides in the lower vegetation belt on mountains, among coniferous forests of different variations.

Western Screech-Owl

Western Screech-Owls are sometimes mistaken for Whiskered Screech-Owls due to their similar appearance. They are like a combination of other Screech-Owls, sharing some of the same characteristics.

Diet:
Eats mostly insects, but also eats small mammals, birds, frogs, and crayfish.

Habitat:
Occurs in open woods, and semi-open country mixed with scattered bushes and trees.

Tropical Screech-Owl

Tropical Screech Owls are very confident; they are not afraid to march up to other owls and speak their minds. Other than that, they can be very envious and jealous of others. They are also similar to other Screech-Owls.

Diet:
Feeds on large insects such as grasshoppers, spiders, moths, scorpions, and crickets. Will occasionally take snakes and small mammals such as rats and bats.

Habitat:
Found in open woodland, second growth, forest clearings, and streamside groves.

Northern Saw-Whet Owl
Aegolius acadicus

Northern Saw-Whet Owls are very small owls, similar to Elf Owls and Pygmy Owls in size. Even though they are small in frame, they are tough, and can withstand a lot of things like tough weather and wildfires.

Over 8 years (average)

Clutch size is from 3 to 7 eggs.

Diet:
Feeds on small rodents including voles, deer mice, and shrews. Also is known to eat squirrels, bats, small birds, frogs, and insects.

Habitat:
Inhabits coniferous and deciduous forests, with thickets of second-growth or shrubs.

Eagle Owl
Bubo bubo

Eagle Owls, like Great Grays and Great Horned Owls, are very large owls, which, along with there sharp claws and beaks, earns them their name. They are very strong, and very brave; most don't know the word 'fear'. They are excellent to have in battles. Along with their big characteristics, and big personalities, they tend to have big egos as well.

Lifespan:
Over 60 years (maximum)

Diet: Mainly mammals from shrews up to foxes and young deer. Also a wide range of birds, reptiles and amphibians.

Habitat:
Mainly remote rocky areas, river valleys, ravines, quarries etc. also open forest, Taiga, steppe and semi desert.

Scops Owl
Otus sunia

Scops Owls are very speedy fliers and have good memory, making them good messengers. They are also very small, and like Elf Owls, try to prove themselves despite their size.

Northern Hawk Owl

The Northern Kingdoms

Hawk owls, like Eagle owls, get their name for their hawk-like claws, beaks, and all-together appearance. They are very good fliers, and are usually talented hunters. Often a very loyal and patient species.

Egg Description:
Clutch size is from 3 to 9 eggs.
(The limit is 3 eggs for RP purposes)

Diet:
In summer months, their diet consists of rodents and small mammals. In the winter when prey is scarce, they feed on avian species.

Habitat:
Inhabits open forests with easy access to clearings. Avoids dense coniferous forests and prefers sparse woodlands.

Striped Owl

Striped Owls are... can you guess? Recognized for their distinctive black stripes. From a distance they are sometimes mistaken for Long-Eared Owls.

Diet:
Small mammals, birds, reptiles and large insects.

Habitat:
Open and semi-open grassland with trees, also open woodland, forest edge, plantations, and rice fields. Avoid heavy rain forest.

Blue Owls

Found in the Middle Kingdom

Blue Owls can be any species of owl (see above) and any shade of blue. They can live to up to 400 years in some areas. They are generally peace loving owls who disagree with fighting, wars, or any other kind of violence, especially when blood is shed, unless its necessary. Many enjoy meditation and even day-flying because there are no crows in the Middle Kingdom.

Dragon Owls

Found in the Middle Kingdom's Panqua Palace.

Size:
Larger than the
largest normal owl.

Wingspan: Evergrowing due to over grown feathers.

Weight:
Too heavy to even fly.
