Never quite got the point of these.

Paolo (paolovf) Great series. Vice City was my favourite. I think GTA IV was technically a better game but Vice City had the best balance, feel and music.

I don't think I'll get the new one though, simply because I wouldn't have the time to play it properly.

Meels (amelia) That's because you're a nice guy, Mark. My brother LOVED them, because he could "slap some bitches" and steal cars without going to jail. I thought it was a crappy game.

Bully was totally irreverent, yet humorous. GTA was just irreverent.

Paolo (paolovf) Well, you both might not have liked it but it's one of the best selling series out there (wiki - 'having sold more than 124.1 million units, as of September 2011').
It also draws a lot of inspiration from gangster films such as Scarface, Casino and Goodfellas which were also hugely successful.

Like how the music in the cars is from Scarface sometimes?

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) I played San Andreas for an couple hours on my old PS2, but I didn't really get into it. I did the missions like I was supposed to, but other than that, it got boring just driving around, and shooting people got old after the first few times too. Now a great game (at least in my opinion) by the same company is Red Dead Redemption. I couldn't get enough of that game for months. I'm totally hoping they make another one.

Paolo (paolovf) @Mark - as far as I remember none of the music on the Scarface soundtrack features in Vice City, but the Wave, Flash and Emotion radio stations would be very similar.

There were many references to films and tv shows in the game.

Your lawyer is based on Sean Penn in Carlito's Way, Ray Liotta does the voice of the main character, Philip Michael Thomas (Ricco Tubbs from Miami Vice) does the voice of your accomplice Lance Vance and even Debbie Harry (Blondie) does voice overs.

There's a shout out to Andy Kauffman with one of the mission series carried out of a taxi company, one of the first missions pays homage to the famous Scarface chainsaw scene and the very last epic mission of epicness ends Scarface style. I'm pretty sure one of the cars you can find is modelled on Sonny Crochets Ferrari in Miami Vice and the speedboats from Miami Vice are also used.

I haven't played the game in years so my memory is not too fresh on all the references but as a big fan of these films, TV shows and the atmosphere of 1980's Miami this game was an absolute delight.

@Kit - I can see how some people get bored after the missions, however there were side missions and achievements to complete. If you got the cheats you could have some fun with helicopters and crazy weapons, try and attack the army base etc. But yeah, I guess it's not the type of game you can play forever, but what is?? Minecraft is the only one that come to mind.
