House of Leaves House of Leaves question

Can someone please explain the meaning (if there is one) of the story Johnny tells at the end of chapter 21-about the sick baby? Did I miss something? Thanks!

I ADORE this book, but there are parts of it--BIG parts of it--that you sort of have to let flow over you.

I don't think this is a book that lends itself to straightforward "meanings." I think the baby story will be interpreted differently by every reader, and mean something different to every reader.

I think Megan said it perfectly. It means something different to every reader.

That acknowledged, what the story illustrates, to me, is the mythical powers of maternal love in (and over) the life of a child, something that Johnny also reflects on in speaking of his own mother and through her eloquent letters to him in the latter part of the book.
