Exercise your brain by picking up an educational book inspired by a subject covered in a manga (i.e.: Japanese Classics, Ikebana, tea ceremony, Enviromental History, Meiji Era, etc.).

A participant at the end of November will be picked at random to select an anime series for all of us to enjoy!

Don't you love it when that happens?
I'm thinking of picking up my on/off again folklore book.

What book are you reading?

Sounds fun! Did you also read a manga that took place in Ireland? That would have been fun!

Lear | 56 comments Are there any?
about the closest i can come up with aside from the random mission in dublin was Durarara!! which has a Dullahan as a major character, and Fate/Stay Night with Cu Chulainn.

I had forgotten about Fate/Stay Night. I saw the anime and when I saw the manga, I wasn't sure that I could handle reading it too.

Jamie | 46 comments Does The Tale of Genji original novel work? They re-created the original story into a Manga series about 25 years ago. But I thought it would be great to read the original story that was written back 11th century. If I can get through the book in time. It is quite long... So I may have to fins something else in time.

I say yes. I was thinking of reading folklore for my book. But we'll have to see what I actually read. Right now I'm reading about names of places and the Mitford sisters.

Anywho- I'm guessing it's a classic. I don't know much about Japanese lit.

Jamie | 46 comments Actually I think I will have to change that for now. I have too much I am reading now and probably won't have timeto read that long a book with the other books I've committed to. So I am changing mine to Monkey A Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en since this story inspired Saiyuki.

I'm hoping that I'll have time for this one too!
Geez! By the time I get home from my internship, this event will pretty much be done. Then I have to produce a 10 page paper about it. boo

Jamie | 46 comments Ok, I have finished Journey to the West which inspired both Saiyuki and Dragon Ball. IT was great to find out what the based Goku's character off of. I really enjoyed it.

That's so neat! I never thought Dragon Ball would be based off of anything. hah! What isn't at the very least inspired by something else?

message 15: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 46 comments Yea it was suppose to be. At least the character. Then DBZ came out and I have no idea if that is based on anything, lol. Saiyuki did a much batter job with the characters and even personality.
