Peekay was an development investment in The Power of One. I thought Peekay’s personality was well developed and I had little trouble indentifying with the character. His morals are controversial in many areas, such as the many scams he establishes with Morrie, his tobacco smuggling habits, and the hatred he yields toward the Judge. Peekay has a powerful sense of pride and an astounding immunity to the racist ideas practiced around him. As Peekay ages I noticed a subtle but definite progression in is maturity and state of mind.
However Peekay’s unfailing success and never ending emotional, mental, and physical accomplishments seem to dehumanize him and contradict his familiar personality. It’s clear Bryce exaggerated Peekay’s achievements to portray “the power of one” but this alters the story into more of a metaphor and depreciate Peekay’s well established character.
