Gemma (kerantli) Hello, I'm Gemma (Sweetly.Sorrowed on the forum). I'm from Huddersfield, so have around 4 Lush shops that I can get to via train.
I live with my OH and two kids, and an attention seeking kitten.
I used to read wayy too much for it to be classed as healthy according to my mum, usually having something like 10-15 books on the go at once and still be able to tell you what was happening in each book.
I will join in with the monthly book readings, but I won't be able to in November, since I have NaNoWriMo looming over my head!
I've been reading more since I got my Kindle, Seriously has been a life saver for me as I was going mad not being able to read much due to the kids and them always ripping my books to shreds if I put them down.
Genres I like are; Chick-Let, Biography, Young Adult (yes, still!), Romance, Paranormal, Humour, Gay and Lesbian, Childrens and *mumbles*erotica*mumbles*
Not too keen on Sci-fi, horror, crime or thrillers, but other than that, I've probably read most other genres.
I do like actual books, second hand are the best, can't beat the smell of old books, but I do go for new books too if they catch my interest.

Uhm.. I think that's about it really.

Curlyclaz | 7 comments Hi I am Clare (curlyclaz) I live in Rugby with my OH Matt and three cats, I love reading and am never without a book (or two !) I have read as long as I can remebmer and still remember my Dad reading stories to me from bedtimes when I was small.
I mainly read crime now but still love a good horror. I am currently enjoying reading the scandinavian crime books such as Jo nesbo and steig larrson.
I love looking in charity shops for a good bargain book and cam get a bit obsessed with authours and buy everything they write (Ian Rankin !)
Other than reading I like cooking and Beer !

Michelle | 30 comments Hi, I'm Michelle (Michbunny on the IF). I live in Staten Island, NY. I have always loved reading. I've become very attached to my kindle as it has given me the opportunity to sample new genres, mainly urban fantasy. I hope to keep up with the group as best as I can.

Brittany Hey everyone! I am Brittany. I am currently attending Michigan State University studying Human Development and Family Studies. I have two semesters left, so I am starting to think about what I want to do in the "real world." When that stresses me out, I turn to books :) I love getting lost in a story or an interesting topic. I am so looking forward to reading with you all! It looks like you have some pretty great picks

A very warm welcome to our group. If you have read any of our past books or stories please feel free to revive their threads with your thoughts:)

Aimee (smiley_laydee) | 92 comments Hello, I am Aimee (smiley_laydee on the forum).

I've always been an avid reader. I began reading books for the age of 2 and a half since I had a disability and it was a good way of keeping me entertained. Since then I spent a long time in my childhood getting excited over books (even when I was bought a bike for my birthday, I was more interested in my new anthology of stories!).

I took both English Language and Literature at A level and decided to do it at University also. However, I only managed 3 months of that degree due to getting ill and 18th Century literature boring the pants off me...

Sadly dropping out of Uni made me avoid reading for a while. I'd fallen out of love with it completely. Last year I attempted to read some Pratchett but got about halfway through. I read a bit of chick lit on my summer hols but never really got back into it.

That's why Im here :) To be inspired by words again and fall into alternate worlds. If I read at least one whole book because of this, it'll be a triumph!

If you put books on your virtual shelf then we can always help with recommendations and goodreads has a recommendations feature too. I was stuck after moving back to the U.K. and studying and this site and group have really helped motivate me:)

I also studied Eng Lit at Uni and dropped out after completely losing all passion for reading (and other circumstances) and it's been wonderful to spend my spare time reading again.

Teepee | 1 comments Hi I'm teeps...forum member and voracious reader. I have a love of plays, magic realism, tudor and modern classic literature. I would love to see some discussion around lost gems of the 20th Centuary. I have to have a book or play on the go and move between factual and fiction easily. I have had this account for an age but I hope it becoming an app increases my visits. I will keep an eye on the reading list and pitch in to anything that intrigues. Lovely idea, to have a group :)

Welcome Teeps - make yourself at home and post wherever you want. I'd love to see a thread that finds some lost gems - have you checked out the folio society thread? I've been loving looking through their catalogue - interesting reads that I have never heard of. I really want to make this a year of discovery and historical work is something I'd love to get back into:)

message 71: by bookishbat (new)

bookishbat (morgaine_cat) | 90 comments hi, hello and wotcher to all of you!

I'm Eva (or morgaine_cat, just like on IF) and I joined this site and this group about a week ago. it took me a couple of days to get my head around it and have a little read through all your discussions and upload a few of my books, but now I feel comfortable enough to post and let you know a bit about myself.

I'm from Vienna, Austria, I was born and grew up here, then I lived in London for about 7 1/2 years in my twenties before moving back home. it's not that I didn't like it, but I was homesick, I felt a bit uprooted the whole time I was in the UK and at the end of the day I just belong in Vienna. it's where my family and friends are and it's where I feel most at home. but I do miss aspects of the UK and probably always will.

I've been reading and loving books for as long as I can remember, it was pretty much instilled in me from the beginning, my parents, grandparents, my whole family likes books and reading and raised me to like and respect them, too.
where books and reading are concerned I'm old school, as much as I love technology (I adore my ipod, I'm almost addicted to surfing the net, I love my macbook) I prefer an actual book when reading. I like the feel of paper and pages in my hands, I like the smell and feeling how much I've read by the amount of pages held by my left hand and how much I've got left in my right hand (plus I don't like reading too much on a screen). I also have a bit of a bookmark collection, and I like picking a new bookmark that goes with the next book I'm about to read, it's like my little ritual before I begin something new. so I don't see myself getting an ereader any time soon.
I like actually owning books I read, especially the ones I love of course, so I have a lot of them.

books and reading are a very emotional thing for me. they can make me happy or sad, they can be uplifting and inspiring, make me think about things and most of all they are pure escapism for me. when things get too much, when I feel I need to distract myself from real life I just have to pick up a book and that usually does the trick. I also don't like it when I'm between books (I think someone called it book-limbo. I like that expression!), it always makes me feel uneasy, I need to be reading something.
books are like friends to me, I re-read books a lot, there are usually some I pick up every year again and again, or when the craving for that particular story has to be satisfied. and I love that I can look at a page and think of the last time I read it, when I might have been in another place or in a particular mood and I can remember that time very vividly just by revisiting those words.

my favourite genre is probably fantasy, and fiction in general. I like books set in other times, too, but I'm not too keen on horror or crime and most thrillers are also not for me. I don't like being too scared by books as I have an extremely vivid, lively and colourful imagination and I just can't switch it off sometimes.
(for that reason I can't be reading any rape or torture scenes, also I think life can be really bad and horrible sometimes and I'm fully aware of that, so I don't need to read about how much it can suck on top of that. I feel the same about films, too.)

that's rather a lot of rambly information, isn't it? sorry for that.
anyway, I really like this page already, it's a nice system and I think there are lots of different things you can do with it. the only slight complaint I would have is that you can only set one 'date read' with a book, I think it should allow you to put in multiple ones, surely I can't be the only on who reads the same book again and again. I have solved that particular little problem for me by putting the other dates in my private notes.
I also like the group you ladies have built here, it feels very comfortable and I hope to join in on some of the reads in the future.

I'll be shutting up now. I have my next book to pick out.

That was a lovely post Eva. Welcome to our group it's always nice to have new members!

I feel the same way about you when it comes to the physical feel of a book in the hand ... a kindle just wouldn't be the same. I don't like to part with my books either, I'm a bit of a hoarder. I guess I get an emotional attachment to them.

Alexis (dragonflymoon) Hi

I live abroad now, desperately trying to learn Greek.

Pretty lonely sometimes as I seem to mess things up with friendships,so I shut myself off.

ToddlerM keeps me on my toes and I want to read more in front of her. I love the enthusiasm she has for books in such a technical world.

i need to get to grips with this site!

Lildancer | 10 comments Hi all, Jade here (or lildancer as on the forum).
I have always loved reading and always wonder why I never continued my English studies on to A level/university level, but I still try to read as much as I possibly can. I think books can help get you through the darkest of times and I love how I can escape in to a different world when I'm reading! I have had an eReader for 2 years but have never attempted to use it properly as I just love the feel of books too much.
Currently living in South Wales whilst studying for my Ecology degree, but I would love to explore the South of England when I graduate.
Nice to meet you all. :) x

Breige (breigeflynn) | 87 comments Hi! I'm Breige (midgetflynn) on the forum. I joined Goodreads as I thought it would be a good way to keep track of what I was reading (I like to read a few books on the go!) and to find new suggestions.

I love reading, as a child I used to beg my mother to bring me to the library! By the time I was old enough to go by myself, I probably went at least twice a week! When I got into my teens, I found I didn't read books as much (more magazines) but in the past few years or so, I've gotten back into it. Probably around the time I rediscovered the library!

Soupy | 15 comments Hello, I'm Soupy! I've just read through the whole thread and I've really enjoyed hearing about everyone. I live on the coast in the north-east, not at all far from Aliantha, actually! *waves*

I've always had a love of books. My favourite thing at school (and home!) when I was a child was reading and writing stories and poetry (I remember being fascinated by Kubla Khan!). One of my earliest memories of school is of my teacher asking what I was doing when I was rummaging around in the big case of books (to which I responded, 'ferreting' heehee).

For me, reading is a sign of wellness. For a long time, my ill health meant I wasn't able to hold concentration long enough for reading and it felt like a real loss, so to be able to start reading again and get absorbed in plots and characters is very exciting to me.

I'm a traditionalist when it comes to books, I love the feel and smell of paper. I don't think I'll ever be a Kindle person!

I don't really have a favourite genre but, like Teeps, I love plays and would love to start reading more again. One of my favourites is A Streetcar Named Desire - I just love how poetic Blanche's character is. At some point, I would like to do a degree in English Lit because it has always been a passion of mine and is one of the few things I can truly lose myself in.

Ok, I think that's quite enough rambling from me! I feel a bit shy about involving myself in book discussion with me being a bit rusty, but any contribution is better than none, right?!

Karen | 120 comments Hi, I'm Karen, and I usually lurk on the Lush Forum as Shadowalker. I'm an avid reader, and will read most things (with reason - I draw the line at Mills & Boon & Barbara Cartland thought!)

I have to admit that one of my favourite genres is dark fantasy. I'm open to most suggestions on things to read and will happily consider other genres to read other than the ones on my profile.

I usually lurk in darkest Warwickshire, but have been known to make the odd escape to Cheshire & Cornwall, where I have family.

may I ask what you mean by dark fantasy?

message 100: by Karen (new)

Karen | 120 comments I mean things like the Anita Blake series of books - not quite standard fantasy, but can be quite dark, as Laurell K doesn't skimp on the details.
