du Maurier is becoming a favorite of mine. I've read Rebecca, some short stories (including The Birds,Don't Look Now and Kiss Me Again Stranger) and just recently The House on the Strand.

I just came across this piece in The Guardian:

I pre-ordered this - the title story has me intrigued. I also ordered a different collection which includes "The Breakthrough" (recommended by Jeff).

Do we have members - Lois? - who are fans and recommend which of her novels I should read next?

[who are some of your favorite authors - use these folders to tell us about them]

How about this: Rebecca: the musical. This has played all over Europe and is finally headed to Broadway with English lyics.

Jessica (jesstrea) I picked up a discarded biography of her at my local library. Haven't yet read it but have glanced through it--seems like an interesting person. I didn't know there was a lot of gender stuff in her life, for ex--

I did read a memoir she wrote as well Myself When Young: The Shaping of a Writer - whihc was very good.

She had an affair with Gertrude Lawrence and a few others. She was very close for a time with film director Sir Carol Reed.

There is a movie based on this relationship which for the life of me I can't remember the name or actresses in the roles. I believe it came out in the 90's or early 2000's. Juliette Moore pops into my head but can't be positive.

The film was called "Daphne" and starred Geraldine Somerville ("Cracker," "Gosford Park" and "Harry Potter") as Daphne and Janet McTeer as Gertrude Lawrence. I've never seen it.

Dawn (& Ron) (FurryReaders) | 38 comments Did you look that up? Please tell me you didn't just know that information off the top of your head.

I thought it was Daphne but then second guessed myself, thinking that was too simple. Hah, fooled myself.

Have a safe and Happy New Year, Ivan!

I did just know it. It's been on and off my Amazon wishlist for the past year - that's only reason I knew it.

Happy New Year to you two too!

Lora (lorabanora) | 425 comments I only just read Rebecca. I think I enjoyed her enough to look into The House on the Strand. Time travel gets my attention.
And...since I'm responding this many months after the last post: happy summer eveyone!
