Deana I need to write an essay on A Painted House this week. I have been thinking about the theme I would like to write about. The obvious is what the painted house means but I would rather not do the obvious. Does anyone have any ideas?

Amanda How about:

The fact that the point of view is a young child who doesn't understand all the subtext of what is going on around him. He sees things but doesn't always understand the deeper meaning.

Or questions of race and class. There are at least four distinct classes/races of people in this young boy's world: 'his' family and people like them, poorer white people, black people and Mexicans.

The relationships between the three generations of family. The boy has a very different relationship with his father than the father has with the grandfather. Why might that be? How is it demonstrated?

Just a few ideas I had.

Deana Wonderful ideas! Thanks.
