Just finished "A Lover's Portrait" by Jennifer Alderson
Here's my Goodreads review: "A vibrant, authentic depiction of Amsterdam during the Nazi occupation. Jennifer Alderson does a magnificent job of bringing the past to life as she weaves an intriguing mystery full of suspense."
Just started "A Bridge of Sighs and Dreams" by Pamela Allegretto

I've just started Strange the Dreamer, as it happens. Quite impressed so far!
Just finished
. Very enjoyable and the last of my Virgil Flowers books. Great ending and loved what he called the dog! If you've read it you know what I mean, if not and you like the name That Fxxxing Flowers you will enjoy it too!Just started
I finished The Chalk Man today. It was a good mystery/thriller. Solid four stars, maybe even four and a half.No idea what I'll read next. Shall peruse my TBR now.

I also finished it today. Almost a five for me, but not quite. Really enjoyed it though and will review it later. I've been struggling to find books that engage me lately, so don't know what I'll read next either.
I can't put my finger on what exactly stopped The Chalk Man from being five stars for me. What you reckon? The secondary characters were slightly too two dimensional, perhaps.
The plot was excellent. The writing was very good. Imagery and foreshadowing was done well.
I started another thriller before bed. Dead Woman Walking
It's very well reviewed on goodreads, so I have high hopes for it but 25 pages in and I can't say I'm gripped.
I won't give up on it quite yet, though.
Patti (baconater) wrote: "I can't put my finger on what exactly stopped The Chalk Man from being five stars for me. What you reckon? I liked the slow build up but felt that it became a bit pedestrian as the book continued, which resulted in a lack of real tension. Also felt that the characters reacted to some of the events a little too lightly.
Finished Peter May's I'll Keep You Safe but can't say I enjoyed it. Half the book was reminiscing about adolescent love, the plot was too far fetched, it just didn't do anything for me, which was a huge disappointment. He's usually pretty reliable. Hey ho. Anyway, I am now galloping through Amy Snow, quite a slight story so far and the language is a bit stilted, trying to sound Victorian. I did also finish The Girl in the Fog, which was entertaining - a bit different though it did remind me of Durrenmatt's The Pledge.

Looking forward to reading this - it was one of the Guardian's picks a couple of weeks ago. As was Kate Rhodes' Hell Bay, and The Child Finder, Rene Denfield. So I've got some tasty reading ahead!

Let us know your thoughts when you're ready, Karen.
I'm interested to hear them.
I'll have a look at the other two you mentioned. Thanks for that.
Just finished The Secret Notebook of Sherlock Holmes it was OK but short and predictable. Enjoying Candles and Roses and going to start Behold! Oddities, Curiosities and Undefinable Wonders
Just finished The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The author points out some really intriguing anomalies in works by Leonardo da Vinci to support a gripping conspiracy theory.Just started The City and the Stars by Arthur C. Clarke, set one billion years in the future. ...
Read book 4 in Susan Cooper's 'The Dark is Rising' series, The Grey King and reviewed it - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1398214675.
Another book read lately - just catching up on reviews - John Gordon's Skinners - reviewed: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2286677865.
I skip read to finish Dead Woman Walking.I wish I could have the time I wasted on it back.
I'm reading The Goldfish Boy now.
I'm finding it quite disturbing. Very slow moving as well.
Hoping something happens soon.
Just finished
which was a rwally enjoyable re-read, and just started
which is another re-read and so far, as hard to put down as it has been before!
Just finished Everybody Lies: Big Data, New Data, and What the Internet Can Tell Us About Who We Really Are
, which was interesting, but some of his conclusions are a bit dubious.Just started
Explaining Postmodernism: Skepticism and Socialism from Rousseau to Foucault.
Patti (baconater) wrote: "Heavy reading there, David!"A bit. Not the sort of thing I've read for quite a while.
But me and post modernism have never really got on.
Nearly forgot. I finished rereading The Hand of Oberon
, only vaguely remembered parts of it, still good though.Just started rereading
The Siege of Trencher's Farm. Always used to like Gordon M Williams books, especially Walk, Don't Walk. But they all seem to have disappeared now. Except for this one, and that's mainly because it became the basis for the film Straw Dogs.
Just finished "Bridge of Sighs and Dreams" by Pamela Allegretto
Here's my Goodreads review: "Bridge of Sighs and Dreams" is a stirring and evocative portrait of Italy under the Fascists and the Nazi occupation. I've visited Italy several times and the elegant descriptions made me feel as if I had returned. This book left me breathless. It drew me in from the first page and didn't let go. It's a testament to the human spirit of survival.
Just started "Murder Most Malicious" by Alyssa Maxwell
Just finished the beautiful, sad, terrific The Child Finder. So beautifully written, so haunting. Can't recommend it highly enough. Right, so now I will be starting The Chalk Man - poor book has a lot to live up to following on from that one!

Okay,

Pam,
I read "The Seeker" too and loved it. It's a wonderfully atmospheric. S.G. Maclean captures the time period perfectly.
I've just finished Candles and Roses 4* read which is unusual for me. Nearly finished my 3 month kindle unlimited trial, read 12 books and trying to finish a 13th
Finished The Chalk Man which was Ok - I think it's actually a black comedy tho not quite up to the standard of Aberystwyth Mon Amour, for example, or a Colin Bateman. Be interesting to see what genre her next book is. Hope she sticks at the black comedy tho as I think she could really shine. Anyway, I've now almost finished Dark Pines which again has a comedic edge to it - some of the characters are a hoot. I look forward to his next book too.
I finished The Keepers of the House. It won a Pulitzer back in the 60s, apparently. It was okay. The ending was very good.
I've started Cold Comfort Farm.
It's meant to be humorous. It's made me smirk a couple of times, but no outright laughter yet.
I'm also struggling a bit with the way the Sussex accent is written. More than an accent, really. It's a foreign language.
Karen wrote: "Finished The Chalk Man which was Ok - I think it's actually a black comedy tho not quite up to the standard of Aberystwyth Mon Amour, for example, or a Colin Bateman. ..."Hmmm. Hadn't considered it as a black comedy. Makes sense.
I'll have a look at the others you mentioned.
Just finished The Coven
. The 2nd in a series, pretty good stuff.Just started
The Girl Who Wouldn't Die

I've got the second one out of the library because I did enjoy The Seeker.
Read another Val McDermid but was even less impressed than with the last one - Trick of the Dark - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2299322215.
Just finished The City and the Stars by Arthur C. Clarke, which was largely rambling nonsense.Just started The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. 11% in. It's excellent.
Just finished Michael McDowell's The Elementals (which was fun, if not quite as frightening as I hoped) and I've started Nichola Griffith's Hild.
Just finished The Reunion by Samantha Hayes. A really well handled psychological thriller.http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...
Finished Behold! Oddities, Curiosities and Undefinable Wonders mixed bag, normal for short story collections. Started The Witness for the Prosecution: And Other Stories on the downstairs kindle and What Katy Did on the upstairs kindle. Not sure what paperback to read

Do No Harm: Stories of Life, Death and Brain Surgery.
Into the Fire Just finished listening to a cracking book by Elizabeth Moon, Into the Fire. Book 2 of Vatta's Peace.
I finished that last week (kindle, not audio). Very lightweight as far as the scifi aspects go, but I thought it made a very good political/military thriller.
Now read a Richard Bachman aka Stephen King - The Regulators and reviewed it - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2304068044.
