ABANDONED. Kid's storybook with wordplay about an elephant and a man who are friends

Hi!
I am searching for a book that my sister read about 20 or more years ago
when she was 2-4 years old. It was about the friendship between a man and
an elephant. It also had plays on words sorta similar to Amelia Bedelia. I
remember one phrase was about them going on a trip. It said something like,
"the elephant packed his trunk." This book could have been part of a
series.
I have looked everywhere for this book. Could someone please help me find
it?

there is series of "Babar the Elephant" childrens' books, but the elephant's friend is a lady not a man

Sounds like Nelly the Elephant. However that was a song and I can't see a book written about it..
